Equipment:
100W solar flood basking bulb:
www.reptilecentre.com/arcadia...
For both heat bulb and plant lights I use DIY ceramic bulb holders, wires and plugs from screwfix. It's relatively simple to put together, works out much cheaper, and they screw straight into the roof of the enclosure. This allows me to use standard size bulb cages, rather than extra long ones.
Bulb cages - this will not fit most premade reptile light fittings :

Substrates:
Perlite bulk bag (I used about 30L in this viv) :
www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...
Organic soil - local garden shops often have much cheaper brands (I used about a 100L of soil for this viv) :
www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...
Orchid bark chips (I used 10-20L in this viv, and i boiled/washed it first) :
www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...
Moss (I used the full bag, plus extra for wrapping around some plant roots, boiled it first since its wet and untreated from this brand) :

Cuttlefish bone (egg shell also works, as does crab shell which i used for this viv) :

I'm so obsessed with these guys and cannot wait for the day that I can finally get one. They are so entertaining with how active and alert they are and their colors are stunning! Did it take a lot of work to tame them or were they friendly/docile from the beginning?
@jewelledlacertacare2712
@jewelledlacertacare2712 7 месяцев назад
It took a long time to tame them. Luna (the female) never warmed up to me. Sol (the male) I still have and he's around 6 now. He was always more calm, but age and the time he's known me has made him very tame now. He lives in a new enclosure in the living room, which is a very busy room, and he confidently watches my cat, large dog, TV, everything. He's not as tame as a beardie, if he comes out of his enclosure he has to stay on a person or a table, if he goes on the floor then he thinks you're a predator. He's happy to climb on anyone though.

@@jewelledlacertacare2712 Totally! I'm thinking of maybe getting jeweled lacertas myself sometime, do you sell babies often? And would it be possible to ship them to germany, or do you know other breeders who are located nearer? And again, thank you for all the work you do!
@jewelledlacertacare2712
@jewelledlacertacare2712 3 года назад
I'm very busy with work this year, so I don't have enough time to raise/sell babies unfortunately. Any eggs Luna produces this year will be going to a trusted reptile shop owner who will raise and sell them locally. I do have a contact in Denmark, but they don't breed timon lepidus anymore. They directed me to this: www.deine-tierwelt.de/ They said that babies pop up on there occasionally. They also said there's a Facebook group called lacertidae that has a lot of European breeders on. Spring/summer is the easiest time to find babies. Good luck!

One of if not the most informative care videos out there. I recently lost my 6 year old male Spinky to a suddenly kidney failure. I was devastated. But I was lucky to get his brother and he is also 6 years and very healthy. I was very outgoing and food motivated in the petshop I got him from and a employee favorite. I have had him just about a week when I writhing this. He is still shy and needs time to adjust to his new enclosure. But he are doing progress and and eats from his food dish and inspect the terrarium and don't mind if I sit outside the enclosure and watch him. He still hides from movements when moving away or approaching, but with time and doing things on his terms I thinks he will be a sosial boy like his brother. Looking forward to start tong feeding and building trust. Do you think I am on the correct path?

@@jewelledlacertacare2712 thanks for your kind words! It's seems like I am doing it right, three weeks in and he is eating from my hand and climbs up my arm. Still a bit skeptical about movements, but that is the last that let go. He is very food motivated so that is a advantage for building trust. How often and how much do you feed yours? And any recommendations for good dry foods to give the dubia cockroaches?

I love this video! Thank you for all that you do. How much food do you usually feed your little ones each time you feed them? Could you make a video that goes more into the details of brumation (how long, what it looks like, temps, etc.)?
@jewelledlacertacare2712
@jewelledlacertacare2712 3 года назад
Brumation is something I'm not confident enough on yet, as I've only done it a couple times, and neither times really went to plan. It's so hard to find any info about it, I just go off of a mix of brumation guides based on other species. I feed them as much as they will eat in a sitting, and then I usually pop some more food in their tank or food bowl. I use ceramic dog food bowls for worms so they can't escape. How much they eat varies a lot, so I just let the individuals decide, they usually have a good sense for it. For babies I aim to always have food available for them, since they're growing so much. The adults get fed nearly every day during the spring, but closer to every other day by the time it's autumn. Sol and Luna can easily eat 10 adult locusts in a day if they're particularly hungry. Other days they will just eat a few. And thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

I have a jewelled lacerta I’ve had him for a few years now my setup is so different to yours and this was a very helpful video, trying to find a decent amount of info on these lizards is hard and I had to sort of go in blind but I’ve managed, is the pearlite needed or is it optional? I want to make the best viv I can for him but I’m still a bit of a novice
@jewelledlacertacare2712
@jewelledlacertacare2712 3 года назад
The perlite was just to substitute a drainage layer, since perlites fine to get mixed into the soil over time, and is often used for plants to increase drainage. I've never done a real drainage layer, and I'm not knowledgeable about them, so take my advice on them with a grain of salt. It was just to try and prevent the bottom of the soil being damp all the time, to help the plants out so their roots aren't as prone to moulding. I also went in blind when I got my jewelled lacertas, it's so hard to find info on them! Thankfully they're very hardy and forgiving in many ways

Thank you! Have you managed with the humidity yet? I can't say I've had any humidity problems but I'm also not very strict with it. I find the basking lamps lower the humidity a lot in that area during the day, while cooler areas stay the same as my house. They raise overnight which is good as that happens naturally with real weather.

@jewelledlacertacare2712
@jewelledlacertacare2712 Год назад
Hello, how is she doing now? It's normal for them to vanish for a few days napping sometimes. It can also be a sign something's wrong, so although she's likely fine, since it's not a brumating season I think it's fine to check on her. I check on mine when they do that, then I put stuff back how it was (or rebury them) and they usually come out by themselves in a few hours. It can be very tricky to find them when they've buried themselves because they're the same temp as the soil and are often so covered in soil it's hard to see them too.

Hi again. Regarding that they manage their own weight. My adult male have eaten alot since I got him from the petshop 3 weeks ago. But the last 4 days he haven't been interested in food. So my guess is that he feel a bit chubby and lessen his appetite. So I plan on skip a day or two before I offer him again. Must add that he mainly eats dubia roaches. Any thoughts?
@jewelledlacertacare2712
@jewelledlacertacare2712 7 месяцев назад
Sounds like it! I'm no diet expert but from what I've heard dubias are a good staple. The more variety the better, but that's hard to do in reality, so having a healthy staple and then adding extra variety when you can is the next best thing.
@ThomasAAT

@@jewelledlacertacare2712 I agree. He manage his own weight and have a healthy bodyshape with good muscularity. Here in Norway its winter and cold, so he now slows down and eats less and with longer periods without food, and he dont loose weight. Where can i buy a jeweled lacerta that ships to/in the US? i cant seem to fond any that are avalible TwT
@jewelledlacertacare2712
@jewelledlacertacare2712 3 года назад
They seem to be very high in demand, but low in supply for the US. This is a good time of year to be looking for one, your best bet would be to contact as many reptile shops as you can that can transport one to you, or that's within driving distance, and give them your contact details to call ASAP if they get any in stock. Shipping across countries is very complicated and expensive from what I've read. If you have the money to spare, their are travel companies that specialise in flying pets, you can get a quote from them, contact a breeder in the UK, and ask if they are willing to sell to you. You would have to handle all the arrangements though. UK sites where jewelled lacertas are often listed (from spring through to autumn) are preloved, gumtree, and pets4homes.

@@DeKalion_Psy my email is jewelledlacertacare@gmail.com I do let them brumate in winter by mimicking the winter daylight cycle and temperatures, I have heard the same thing that they don't live as long without a winter cycle. The room they live in doesn't have indoor heating, which allows me greater temperature control of their enclosures. I'm not sure if I can keep them outdoors at all as I live near the border of Scotland, and the outdoor examples for them are southern England, where the temperatures are much milder. So until I know more I am just focusing on making their indoor enclosure fit their needs as best as I can.
