Jim Cornette Reviews CM Punk Challenging MJF To A Dog Collar Match on AEW Dynamite 

The callback to MJF referencing himself as Piper in Portland with the double meaning "Will You Be My Valentine" basically calling MJF Greg Valentine was brilliant. Just a fantastic promo.

When Punk said it was going to be a match style that was difficult for himself, I thought he was going to announce an MMA match

I admit that I'm completely aware of the Piper vs. Valentine dog collar match but Punk saying to MJF "Will you be my Valentine" totally went over my head..... Brilliant!!

The Raul Julia Street Fighter reference was cool.

MJF's expression on his face was perfect for this segment. You could feel he got knocked down a peg LOL

I loved the double pun when Punk said "Would you be my Valentine?" as he took out the collar. Not just for the holiday, but because he was one of the participants in the most infamous dog collar match of all time. Super good detail.

CM punk vs Mjf is a five star match in any era. These guys can wrestle and they are telling a story. You want to see this match. It's actual wrestling folks. Imagine that in 2022. Usually it's just all high spots and botches.

As soon as Punk mentioned MJF wanting to be “tethered” to Piper I knew there was a dog collar in that box; didn’t even need the “be my Valentine” reference. God, I feel so old. LoL.

Punk has had two legendary and well-known dog collar matches in this career that are HIGHLY regarded.

This is gonna be a trilogy I'm calling it now. Punk wins this one and all in will be the 3rd one.

Next week: MJF puts a $10,000 bounty on Punk.

Just think in an alternate universe Corny and Punk are both in AEW

Guys... it was a Valentine's Day gift in front of him, hence Piper in Portland. The paper wrapping the dog collar had hearts all over it. Punk and his details.

Segment gave me goosebumps, and anyone that knows Punk's history means that bringing out the dog collar has special significance. If you know, you know, and MJF *certainly* knows.

Piper valentine dog collar match is my favorite match of all time. I've met piper about a decade ago, and I took my 5 year old daughter to meet the hammer last summer. Loved those two so much. Jim's right tho AEW should give valentine some air time or a promo package.

I popped when Punk asked MJF to be his valentine, when preparing to announce the dog collar stipulation

It was a gift box. In the promo he said it was a few days removed from valentine's day and asked MJF if he would be his valentine while pulling out the chain

Listening to them talk about wrestling they like is exciting.

First off, my brother, who watched AEW with me, he said that this Punk promo was the first and currently only thing in his time watching AEW with me that impressed him enough that he didn't have a snarky comment following it, his favorite part and mine as well was shockingly glossed over by Jim and Brian here. They did mention that Tony referenced the dog collar classic between Piper and Valentine, but, with this episode being Valentine's day week, I'm surprised that Jim and Brian missed or overlooked the Valentine tongue and check verbage of CM Punk. When he asks MJF if he wants to be Piper in Portland, he lifts the entire collar up, looks dead into the camera and asks, "MJF, would you be my Valentine?" Which I thought was the best line in the whole promo. It was a cheeky wink to what week this episode took place but it also referenced the second man in that famous dog collar affair, Greg Valentine. Here lately, AEW has been lucky that I've been openly spending $50 on the PPV events, cause, nothing hasn't leaped off the page to make me go "OH I gotta pay to see this!!" But genuinely, between the fact that A. This story has been going on since the week of Thanksgiving. B. I thought the first Punk v. MJF should have been put on the Revolution card and C. The World Title match between Cole and Page has absolutely nothing on it, cause, despite it being Lights Out and "Not on the win/loss record" having Cole lose outright to Orange Cassidy and then I'm to believe he's "Next in line" for a world title shot? No thank you. If Punk v. MJF dog collar doesn't main event, close the show, for Revolution. They have wasted the true "main event" feel of this great feud, as well as made it possible for the fans that paid $50 to see the whole PPV, have a chance to check out of it entirely before the show is even over

His dog collar match with Raven was fantastic

The chain in the gift box was a callback to the Starrcade '83 buildup. In that, Piper sent the chain to Valentine in a box. I think there was a cake with the chain baked into it too. It built over weeks. This was all after the Piper "ear injury" (which was actually Roddy taking paternity leave) and the angle where Roddy hung Greg with the barricade rope.

Piper vs Valentine was the "blow-off" for, as Valentine called it, the year of the 👂.

In terms of the tag team title match at Revolution, there's going to be two tag team battle royals over the next 2 weeks to name the two teams to challenge Jurassic Express

I liked this, but mostly for MJF. One facial expression and speechless walk off made the segment.

This is more compelling than any of the stories or feuds around the belts. AEW can offer a platform but they fail to promote their own brand in terms of titles.

From now on, the cross leg sit down will now be called Indian Style.

That was funny when he pulled out the dog collar and ALL the AEW marks in the audience and at home I'm sure collectively gasped. Then you could see and hear whispers in the crowd of people saying FAN 1 - "OMG" FAN 2 - "OMG this is insane" FAN 3 - "Oh man this is gonna be so hardcore, like hardcore to the extreme" FAN 4 - "HOLY COW!! AEW....All Extreme Wrestling" FAN 5 - "YEAAAAAAHHHH" FAN 6 - "OMG this match is gonna put WWE outta business guaranteed. This PPV is gonna have BILLIONS of viewers". FAN - 7 "Oh my God....this is going to be the absolute GREATEST wresting match of all time just like every match, every night on Dynamite".

I like how AEW breaks out old school match types (although not always done well). WWE has the same few match types they do, many are seasonal. Too many. Its weird.

I am NOT a Punk fan... But I LOVE MJF. MJF is making this Punk feud for me. I can tolerate Punk in this way. Not mention that Piper was my favorite in the 80s & I've always loved Valentine. This hits me a lot of ways but I have to deal with Punk... Knowing that Punk is going to win hurts me.
