I'm an ICU nurse at Bellevue hospital! Work in the same unit that Fallon stayed at, and I can confirm that the nurses who took care of him are rockstars! It was so sweet of him to thank the staff, I’m sure it meant a lot to them to be recognized for it

NICOLE JULIANA Don't worry. Ring avulsions are more common if you have thinner rings. The thicker the ring, the less likely of such an occurrence.

I'm so lucky.... Was in the audience a couple of days before Jimmy had his accident and had to cancel his shows. There's a funny story behind it though. When we were there, at the end of the show Jimmy came round high-fiving everyone and my sister managed to get a high five from him. When we found out his hand got damaged, her room mate tweeted her saying "did you hi-five Jimmy too hard?"

+Ash I know what you mean, I've dealt with bad anxiety since I was a kid and I just wish that no one had to go through it. It can be one of the hardest things to deal with. When I'm having a hard time I look up these videos too and they always help. Like you said, I'm actually happy for a bit and that is extremely helpful, especially at night. I wish you the best in dealing with your anxiety moving forward. Try Conan O'Brien's videos too. I always watch his videos and Jimmy's too when I need cheering up :)

Lexapro (escitalopram). It has done a miracle for me. 10mg to start, now I'm at 5mg. I started on it in September, 2007 after one in a series of bad - horrible! - anxiety attacks. Still on it and don't want to get off. I never want to go through that again!!!

That's so sweet and touching what Jimmy says about the meaning of his life. Last month and a half I have spent in bed, fighting with not deathly but a very unpleasant disease. And I couldn't read or watch movies, cause I was so depressed. The only thing I could do is binge-watch The Tonight Show and LNJF, 5 to 10 hours a day, for 1,5 months... Except my family's support, only Jimmy’s show gave me hope and energy to get through the pain. I feel like Jimmy always just wants to share what he has: joy of being alive, childly excitement about the world, and so much warmth. Thank you, Jimmy, for becoming my angel!

I have a somewhat similar story with a chronic pain condition that can be quite difficult at times. Jimmy Fallon's video clips on You Tube are one of my main meds that I don't need a prescription for. We both grew up in military families so I find him easy to relate to. A very genuine guy, very caring. My comedian nurse.

This happened to me 38 years ago, when I was 16. Friends and I were practicing cheer jumps at the bus stop. I got bumped and came down off angle, which caused my high school ring to catch the top edge of the bus shelter. Everything from where the ring had been, down to the knuckle at my finger tip. Back then they called it degloved. ER dr. wanted an immediate amputation, but my Mom told him not to touch me and called her surgeon. He was my hero that day! It took 3 surgeries and a skin graft, but I have my finger, minus some feeling, ( nerve damage ) and it functions. I was never in the ICU and I was released in 2-3 days after surgery, lol. Wish they had kept me longer, as that sh#* HURT! Not so much the finger, but the skin graft site!

It's still called being degloved. I once crushed a ring onto my finger and it was barely saved; it swelled up to three times its size before I could get the ring cut off.

I think it must be both, as it is very challenging it becomes very expensive. Ring avulsion is not like shattering a bone, it's like ripping your finger off, layer for layer, tearing on joints and tendons. The ring just pulls the skin up, rips the blood vessels underneath, etc. You can't just stitch it up, it's micropuzzling to get everything in your finger onto the right place again and get the blood circulation in your finger to work (as he described, you often have to replace the main artery in your finger, because it's ripped beyond repair) and the tendons and nerves and everything. And you have to be fast, because time runs against you, when the blood circulation in a body part stopped.

Trent Crow : In addition to some good points already made here, keep in mind also that any surgery, even a very simple one, has the risk of infection, rejection of materials (stitches, for example), poor healing, and/or re-injury. As Jule Tmann so beautifully, this is extremely complex and specialized, so the risks are MUCH higher (hence Jimmy needing to stay in ICU for so many days while it healed).

Not dumb actually. It helps with dishes dripping on the floor. You just need to pick the right mat or rug for the floor. Have you ever cleaned before or cooked with family, little children and guests around? Plus it's comfy in the mornings when the floor is too cold

When I was in the hospital for Lymphoma (a type of cancer) I got through it by watching RU-vid videos like Jimmy Fallon's videos on my iPad all day. I never got bored of it haha. It was the only thing I did together with playing on the Xbox (you could borrow an xbox in the hospital) and it was nice cause I didn't focus on the chemotherapy too much, I just watched videos and laughed at them. I was happy all day, even though I was very sick. I still watch videos all day but now I'm really depressed cause I'm in lots of pain because of osteonecrosis in most of my bones. I got it because I was really sensitive for the chemotherapy (almost allergic) and it makes holes in your bones and that's very painful.

Its just the skin being peeled off the finger. All you see is the bone and tissue of your finger. Whats interesting is that if its not just a portion of your finger coming off, and all the skin on the finger is ripped off, your nail comes away too. Its fascinating.

He had major surgery on his finger. If that happened to you you would be in the ICU for that long too. You could argue that he got out either because he is famous

nymetswinws He needed that vein from his foot so that the blood would perfuse through his finger again. You can lose a limb or digit very quickly without adequate blood flow. They grafted a blood vessel which must be monitored. Excessive edema, infection, gangrene, nerve damage, blood flow (hand above heart) have to be monitored. And, he can't drive, or have his two energetic and germ-ridden babies affect his recovery. Maybe he had skin grafts too, all very vulnerable to infection.

This is the truest and most heartfelt I've ever seen a talk show get, when he said he realised that's the reason why TV and comedy exists. Good on him and his crew. Go you! Tamani Wheeler Ok, this is serious, but it's not THAT serious. Plenty of people just wear their rings on a necklace or have their rings tattooed on. You could also just say yes to the proposal but no to the ring. If you don't want to get married, just don't (it's understandable), but don't make this the reason you don't.

I don't know, I may have broken my finger in a dumber way. I broke my pinky on the trampoline. Well, not *on* the trampoline exactly, but getting onto the trampoline. My pinky got stuck in a hole in the trampoline net as I lifted myself to get in... You could probably see why this wasn't the story I told my friends in middle school.

I cried when he talked about his finger! I'm so glad it's all better now. I cringed every time someone came near his hand. I breathed a sigh of relief after he had his last surgery & I saw him bending it again without a bandage. One of the shows I saw him finally, "high fiving", the audience members. I was so happy his long ordeal was over.

bicooo1 Poor guy lost his mother in a car crash back in 2011 on the July 4th weekend. He was driving the car, she was the front passenger. I guess he swerved to avoid a stalled van full of people on the highway in upstate New York but ended up crashing. He and his brother, who was in the back seat, were injured but his mother died from her injuries. So fucked up.

I too am a successfully rehabilitated patient of Dr David Chiu. 10 years ago he helped me with a hand/wrist injury when no other vascular surgeon could. I had 10+ hour vascular surgery that only he could perform. I am so grateful. Very unexpectedly today another NYU Doctor recounted Jimmy Kimmel's Dr. Chiu story to me, which I had never heard of. Once again proving that Dr. David Chiu is humble, brilliant & the very best. Thank you Dr Chiu for what you do to help us everyday.
