Jimmy Johnson takes us behind the scenes of what happened with Jerry Jones and the Cowboys that ultimately led to the two going their separate ways. #undeniable #nfl #cowboys
I remember living in Dallas at the time Jimmy was the Cowboys coach. He made the games so exciting. The players were very talented, but I believe he brought out the best in them. The Super Bowls they won proved that. Jerry Jones was very careless causing Jimmy to leave. The Cowboys have never been that exciting again, sad to say.
Jerry and Jimmy knew each other since they played college ball at Arkansas in the 1960s. Their relationship was based on more deeply than owner/employee. Jerry micro manages, and they are both strong egos. Besides, Jerry totally disrespected one of the best football coaches in Tom Landry when he fired he and GM Tex Schramm as he bought the Cowboys.
He's a great coach, cost my team a couple of superbowls (49ers)......lol.....Cowboys should have tried to keep him 1-2 more years. Wasn't the same when he left.
Jerry was the problem. Still is. Wants to be the owner, GM, head coach, assistant coach, personal trainer, quarterback coach, janitor, and third string punter.
What Jimmy Johnson doesn't say here, although has said in other past interviews, is Jerry Jones' stranglehold over the franchise solidified his decision to leave the Cowboys. Jones would always place himself over everyone else, to be the most visible person responsible for the success of Dallas...not the coaches and players. After Johnson left, the dysfunction spread over the entire organization, despite winning a Super Bowl under Switzer with the Johnson built team. Since then, the Cowboys have been an underachieving ball club at best.
Exactly. Jerry destroyed the Cowboys just as fast as he helped get them to the top. It must haunt him everyday of his life knowing his ego was the cause of the Cowboys demise.
I think Jimmy leaving had to do with Jerry. Jerry wanted complete control and Jimmy wanted complete control and Jerry wasn't having it and therefore they parted ways.
I lived in Dallas when the Jones/Johnson era began. I was a Tom Landry kid at the time and I couldn’t stand Jerry Jones or Jimmy Johnson. I was a kid….I didn’t know anything. As an adult; maaaan do I love me some Jimmy Johnson!🤣 He’s just a fantastic human being….many blessings to he and his family🙏🏾🙏🏾❤️❤️
Jerry wanted to be part of the “coaching club” with Turner and Dave W, but wasn’t allowed in. So essentially he fired Jimmy. The not having fun is complete BS, winning is fun. As Aikman said, both Jones and Johnson asked the players to sacrifice but in turn they wouldn’t do it them selves so it blew up.
Exactly. Jimmy’s full of BS here. He’s just trying to temper what everyone knows: that was the dumbest thing ever for Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson to have their little spat resulting in departure of the coach. Yes, it was mostly Jerry’s fault, but Jimmy could’ve stayed. now he’s trying to save his reputation, just like Jerry Jones is trying to save his. The only one speaking any truth on this is Troy Aikman. This was a complete shame, and it never should’ve happened. Jimmy and his fishing story is just another made up fishing story.
Respect for any man who realizes that you work hard, make sacrifices and then you enjoy those sacrifices with friends and family. The differences are as he says is realizing when to stop.
That was one of the saddest days of my life and the angriest. 30 years later and that feeling is still with me. One man caused 30 years of misery for this fan. 30 years.
Let me put it this Jerry Jones put a curse on this team ever since he fired Jimmy Johnson is been 30 years we haven't been to a championship thank you for putting a curse on this team
It's really interesting to hear some wisdom from Jimmy. He talks about how he's a 'live in the moment' kind of person and that probably is what made him such a successful coach as he probably looked to maximize every day on the job. But with the passing of his mom, he also realized that the people you care about aren't around forever so he gave it all up to spend more time with them. I'm glad he's happy and he seems to be at peace with how his career in the NFL turned out
I was so pissed off watching that press conference. It was like taking a Rolls-Royce in mint condition and parking it inside of a incinerator for no damn reason. Jerry's ego destroyed what would have been the greatest dynasty in the history of sports
As a Packer fan, GOSH I couldn't stand him as the coach of the Cowboys, but immediately started seeing his charm when he went to Miami. He seems like a legit good guy and he's one heck of a leader!
What an absolute baller. Left out on the top. Didn’t let Jerry puppeteer him. What if he stayed, and had Jerry’s finger on him and did what Jerry wanted him to do? 3 more years, but 3 years of potentially no Super Bowl appearances, losing in playoffs… coaching schemes he wouldn’t like, personnel changes he may not like, players being traded, dropped, and drafted in ways that may not have fit in his plan… *Think if you were Jimmy. You’re chilling with a drink and a cigar, overlooking an ocean or the mountains somewhere. You’re reflecting about all of the memories and achievements you’ve made in life. If you go out on top, you’ve got 3 years of incredible memories of the dream team and the superbowl wins. All the camaraderie and that unique formula to success.* Or, you stay with Jerry, and you have those great 3 years, but also had 3 years of Jerry’s bullshit being the last 3 years of your coaching career. Why overwrite or add some of those negative experiences when you can end out on top?
In a cut throat business full of unknowns and false promises….. Jimmy Johnson is a rare example of genuine leadership and truthful leadership. He deserved better in Dallas and Miami.
Was so pissed when the news came out that Jimmy was leaving Dallas. Don't care what anyone says. That 3rd Championship Dallas won was Jimmy's.. period. No disrespect to Barry Switzer. But all Switzer had to do was not mess up what was already built. He had a championship team. But it was because of Jimmy Johnson.
Great discussion. As usual. I truly enjoy these videos. But if I could give a bit of feedback.. Whoever decided to insert laugh tracks into this should be fired.
And Jones has never been able to build a champion team since. He bought that one. People blame the coaches quarterbacks, and other players but in reality it all falls on the owner that does not know how build a winning team.
Well, part of that is because a salary cap was put in. You people forget that it was Jerry who opened his pocket book to get Charles Haley. Did Jimmy do that?
Play Along here Please.! I Own A NFL Football Team.! Jimmy Johnson is the Head Coach.. This is how it’s gonna Be As Follow’s… Jimmy Coach the Team.. I handle the Money Part..! How Hard is That???🤣😄🤣🤷🏾
When Dallas got punched in the mouth by Green Bay, Jimmy showed more intensity on Fox's halftime show than any of the coaches or players on the sideline. I hate what Jerry's done to this team.
Jerry screwed up and he knows it and ever since can never recreate the same success as that all time team with Jimmy. Look what’s happened with that team ever since. Back to back years of choking especially in the playoffs
Jerry is the single remaining denominator on the franchise, and they've won nothing meaningful since. The franchise became the wealthiest team because of the fanbase buying into a pipe dream...hope, not because of wins. Once the fanbase gets tired enough of pumping money in the Jones' direction things will change. This Cowboys fanbase has all the power that matters to Jerry...FINANCIAL. Have that stadium and attendance looking like the Panthers stadium did a few weeks back and things will change
Literally every franchise buys into hope, give me a break. The fan base won’t get tired of Jerry in a significant way - with their wallets. As long as the team is visible and profitable, and Jerry is alive, nothing will change. But I doubt the Jones kids will be any different. Were the fans spoiled in the 90’s? Yes, who wouldn’t be, they had an all-time great team. Unfortunately, every subsequent version of the team will be compared to that, and they just can’t compete.
@jasongress8764 Jerry being dead and gone is change enough. Fans have passed waiting on a turnaround that hadn't happened yet. Once his turn comes, that'll be change enough or at least a start of someone different at the helm, blood or not
Jimmy Johnson is one of the best coaches to ever come along. Jerry Jones is a narcissist that can’t get past his own self. Dallas will never win another Super Bowl as long as this narcissist is the team owner and President.
And you're mad at how he's fattened the pockets of NFL owners and teams? Look at Jerry World. Say what you want about that guy, but 'he's a freaking business genius.
That's what alot of these commenters don't understand. Jerry had the power of the owner and Jimmy wanted to keep him out of football. Well, Jerry owned the damned footballs.
Jerry Jones is an idiot when it comes to football coaches. He fired the best 2 coaches in Dallas cowboys history Tom Landry and Jimmy Johnson. Jerry Jones has not hired 1 decent coach since in 29 years. What a fool!!!!!!!!!
All these comments praising Jimmy and downing Jerry. Well, at the end of the vid here, Jimmy basically tells you what an a-hole he was back then , but because he was the coach and not the meddling owner, he get's all the love. So Jerry FIRED Landry. BIG WHOOP! It was time and I loved the Cowboys of Landry. Why aren't we pissed at Bum Bright? He HATED Tom. I love Jerry Jones' passion. He loves the hell out of the Cowboys. He hasn't won a Super Bowl in 29 years. Ok.
They should have given the Vikings some of those SB rings for that ridiculous ransom they got for the Herschel Walker trade. Dumbest trade in NFL history on the Vikings part, and Jimmy knew just what to do with all of those picks. Jimmy Johnson was the greatest talent evaluator of his day, bar none.
So now he’s trying to save his reputation, just like Jerry Jones is trying to save his. The only one speaking the truth on this is Troy Aikman. As he had said, this was a complete shame, and it never should’ve happened. Jimmy and his fishing story is just another made up “fishing story”. How ironic.
Everyone knows that Jerry the alcoholic wino owner wants all the success to himself, mark my words cause I only say it once that they will never win another Superbowl on my watch unless they get some one to help them how to manhandle your opponent if not oh well like I've said this last few years back if any team manhandle them in a this year 24 they will not go into a championship game it's a true fact
"I wasn't having fun." Tell that to the tens of millions of people who WORK for a living to provide the basic needs for their families. No wonder it took 30 years for them to put you in the Ring of Honor.
That's not why. If you read the history, Jerry is the committee of one who decides who goes on the ring. Jerry's ego is the reason it took so long. The way he treated Landry was unconscionable. They could have come to an agreement. Landry could have retired or just decided to leave. Jerry wiped away Landry and cared nothing for him. Alabama won't do that with Saban. Successful former coaches are to be celebrated.
