Jiu-Jitsu Takedowns for People Who Suck at Takedowns

These are some takedowns that I personally feel don't require you to have a ton of Judo or Wrestling proficiency. I have hit these takedowns on people that have much better takedown ability than I do, but because of the nature of how these are set up and executed, they are difficult to stop.
It should go without saying that these are obviously for a sportive context, but there are elements as always that are applicable to beyond just sport competition.

I never did a takedown in my entire life until last Feb. I had to hire a personal Wrestling coach. He showed me a Double leg, Single leg and Body locks along with defense and movement. Just the pure basic things you cannot get in bJJ

I'm horrible at takedowns, HORRIBLE. ill have to work on these, but overtime i spar, EVERYONE grabs for the lapel from chest to back of the neck. so that ankle hook or single leg seems the best for me to work on. thanks so much! Im in the same boat as someone below i usually wait for the other to try and take me down then try to counter or pass their guard.

Best advise I can give...... stop playing defensive. Your playing too safe. Live training is the time to be testing new things and taking risks, make mistakes learn where openings are. There is a massive difference between playing 'to win' and playing 'to not lose'... playing to win will make your odds 50/50 playing not to lose will drop those odds massively. It also impacts your mindset, so change the mind set. Keep attacking (obviously remember your defense too) but the more you attack the more you will build your level of fitness up you won't get lazy habits and you won't miss technique testing options... if your a beginner defensive play can be because your mind is trying thing of moves and things to do..... practice 3-4 techniques and drill the hell out of them. When the mind goes blank resort to them never let up.

Absolutely love the channel! This is the first channel I’ve ever subscribed to (still working out what that does, exactly). As a BJJ newbie whose only martial arts background is TKD as a kid, your videos (particularly this one and the “Lots of Submissions from Closed Guard”) have been inestimably helpful in my beginner’s rolls with guys who want to lovingly show me my place in the pecking order. My prof. helpfully teaches in the same “let’s start with this, and improv if s*** goes sideways” manner that you do, and I appreciate you both for it. BJJ is chess meets jazz for me. I love the free-flow, one-take bent of your vids. My only request would be: Could you supplement them with more nuanced breakdowns of each technique? Just a suggestion from a novice to a prof. whom I’m sure has tons of free time :-) At any rate, thanks for improving my game and the game of my new fam. Keep doing you, star.

I really appreciate the comment and all the kind words. I always appreciate the insight and observations. I definitely understand the value of adding more detailed breakdowns of the techniques, and from time to time I do. However, I typically intentionally keep things fluid and brief and quick so that 1. People with short attention spans will still watch 2. People will go to my Patreon Page and subscribe to more detailed class videos. Thank you again!

Internet A.D.D. folks like myself. I’m unfamiliar with Patreon but would love to visit your page. Would you mind to send the link and/or post it in the description? Thanks again for your response. It’s obvious that you want to spread the joy of the sport/lifestyle, not yourself. That’s the vibe that brought me to BJJ. That, and the fact a 5’7”, 175# guy can finally find his right sport and kick some ass.

Three was a take-down I was taught and practicing earlier this month. Setup is southpaw - right leg and hand forward for both fighters. Right hand is to the back of the opponent's neck and the left hand is on the sleeve of the opponents right hand. Step back and pull down to draw him off balance, drop to the right knee and take the ankle with the right hand. Pull both the left and right ankle in opposite directions to turn the opponent and take him to his back. Whenever I'm shown a technique, I apply it under resistance. If it still works, then good. This technique fails with minimal resistance applied. Not sure if you've seen or done something similar here. Was just curious if it was my execution before ultimately discarding it.

I wrestled in HS and College (Div 2 Umass Lowell). My leg attacks are great for non BJJ and Judo but I had to make major adjustments for both inside and out side penatrations (doubles/highcrotches and singles) or I was just going into their guard or worse fighting off chokes and arm bars. The one technique, you show great, are ankle pick variations that seem to make the conversion well to BJJ. Also throws seem to be universal! Great great video. You got a sub!

Thank you for clearing that up for me. I don’t compete in Judo so it’s hard to keep up with the ever changing rule set.

I like the instructions you give.. very simple to understand.. however, do you have any suggestions for ‘street fighting’ take down techniques .. I know it may be a departure from jujitsu but I would appreciate some advice .. thank you

I have lots of videos on that topic. Feel free to search my channel for them. Here is the first one that came to mind, one I filmed while in Mexico, but there are lots of others across my channel. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZUShR3MHhVY.html
