JMT++ Day -1, How 400mi Begins

After completing and vlogging each of the USA's "Big Three" trails (Appalachian Trail 2021, Continental Divide Trail 2022, Pacific Crest Trail 2023), I return to the High Sierra in 2024 for a nice, 300mi+ hike of its high passes, its crystal clear lakes, and its enchanting views. Hiking through these trails last year I encountered the record-shattering snows of 2023, and while I enjoyed that experience in hindsight, I am eager to embark on what I hope might a little less death-defying and a little more accessible beauty. I'll tack about a hundred miles onto the north end of the JMT, as well as good miles into the middle and end of that trail, hence "JMT++." Follow along this exciting return adventure!

Love this section of the PCT. This is where I spent most of my time in the Sierras. Especially around the Dorthy Lake area.

Thanks for the info about your route. Growing up I spent every summer in Sequoia with the family. Not much hiking with them around there until I got older and then 12 miles a day was about it. But I am familiar with that beautiful area and really looking forward to your journey. Thanks for taking us along. My heart is warm to see the area again.

This looks brilliant 👍😀 So happy to have you reporting from trail again with your beautiful vids and views. Thanks so much for sharing your adventures again 😊 Really curious about the side tracks, and of course Whitney! (Which I managed to summit in 2013 from Guitar Lake… also a low snow year…) 🌞

Your intended hike out to Lodgepole reminds me of the journals of pre-JMT expeditions that would hike into and out of the various canyons and watersheds because they were unable to get their pack animals and expedition gear up and over the current high passes prior to the current JMT. Looking forward to your further episodes! As always -- Be safe; keep at it!

@@travelinbeat You're welcome! Just arrived in the USA today! As mentioned earlier, there were some potential problems, and sadly they actually did materialize. For now please know that I'm doing OK. Hope the JMT++ continues to be smooth and enjoyable. I'm missing Bishop! Be safe; keep at it!!

Great to watch your first video in your JMT++ hike. I live in the Fresno/Visalia area and could give you a ride to/from Roads End depending on when you will be there. There is a store down near Roads End but things can close early for the season down there. Grant Grove has a store and as well as Lodgepole like you mentioned. You have some options. Feel free to reach out! Take care!

too cool we were in the woods at the same time... too bad i couldnt give you a ride we were just down the road in Yosemite/ kennedy would have been a bit out of the way haha/// but yeah man we were backpacking Yosemite aug 3-6, then drove into bishop, couple days in the desert, and back over sonora on the 8th... So glad you came back to the Sierra in Summer for the daylight experience! I bet you acclimated pretty fast once you got going but yeah that first day is always a little interesting... looks like a fantastic route wow looking forward to more great scenes so far!!

Thanks, Potato!! Yeah it takes a minute to wrap one's head around the abject inability to perform at the rate to which one is acclimated-- but that's just part of the adventure I suppose!! Moving good now and with wifi, I'm excited to get some of these videos up for you guys!!

Instead of going down Bubs Creek may I suggest taking the Paradise Valley trail to roads end then back up Bubs Creek to rejoin the JMT/PCT. There’s also a pretty good store at Kings Canyon only about 5 miles from Roads End 7

I have actually fielded this recommendation from multiple people now! As difficult as it is for me to decline such a suggestion, I'm afraid I feel some obligation to stay true to the JMT. At this point I'm sure I'm missing out, but my inner completionist demands what he demands!!
@subsequenta592
@subsequenta592 27 дней назад
That sounds like a cool hike, but very difficult to line up all the permits and ensure you're entering all the various trailheads on the correct day. Are you going to talk about that aspect in your videos at all?
@travelinbeat
@travelinbeat 25 дней назад
I have heard several requests to discuss these details and certainly will produce a video covering such things once I complete the hike. Thanks for asking!!
