What this video proved to me is, everyone is different and like different things. I personally like a JNat better, mostly because of the silky smooth feedback, and my Thuringian is a lot narrower than my JNat, both give you a great shave, so I enjoy them both. Thanks.

I like having a variety of stones to use at any given time. Sometimes we have wide temperature & humidity swings where I live so I never know what condition my face/skin is going to be in. That’s where options really come in handy...

Love your explanation Keith. I've never had an escher edge. JNATS, especially ozuku are hard to beat for "Me", but I'd love to experiment with an escher! Hope all is well my brother from another mother! Coming up to Brooklyn soon to see my cugine! Bensonhurst

Nice video Keith! I have a La Lune Special Stone two Welsh Slates (A Purple and what is either a Dragons Tongue or the labled 15k stone) and two mystery JNats I got in a lot off eBay, but I haven't gotten to use a Thuringian or Escher.

When I found out jnats are not equated with numbers I was like….. what? Great channel great video. Just recently got into kamisori.

@@KeithVJohnson1 i have synthetics. Naniwa. I figured out you can use them to level each other the slurry from it is actually extremely effective at getting a great edge. I’ve got the 12k naniwa coming. I’m coming from the “bushcraft and survival” blades and sharpening techniques so this has been fun. Do you know the difference between the various kamisori blades and steel. I things labeled tamagahanie and I just figure it’s a scam.

I am familiar with steel types from across the globe, sure. It's a different topic though, better suited for the comments section of a different video. I don't like to wander too far off course.

I prefer the Escher above any other hone. The only thing that could make it better is go from the Escher to a Black Ark. For Me, the Escher is the bomb. But my Shobu ain't no slouch. They are hard to diss, and there are times when I want that edge. It is whatever you personally prefer. There is no "better".

Jnats are hard to beat. But yes, it's not fair, or right to say they're better. I never tried an escher , and because of the high prices I probably never will... Great one, as always Keith ! 👍

I know one thing - I didn't know a label could be sealed on the stone. I bet that is a tough thing to do.
@KeithVJohnson1
@KeithVJohnson1 4 года назад
I don't recommend attempting it with Eschers because some sealers can make the ink in the label run.

Okay, totally off topic but I want to draw on your Jnat experience. I sharpen very high end sushi knives for some customers of mine and would like to know what finishing process and stones you would use to get the best results. These blades are mostly high carbon at 60+ Rockwell hardness. I enjoy sharpening so time is not a factor.
@KeithVJohnson1
@KeithVJohnson1 4 года назад
Hi, thank you for watching. Your question is interesting, and I appreciate you asking. But its a very lengthy discussion, one that needs more time that I could afford. Also, besides being off topic for this video, its' also off topic for this channel. I focus on razor honing because it's a specialized discipline that really needs its own space. Knife sharpening is much more mainstream/popular, it would/could take over the channel, so I need to keep the topics separate.

I finish my Yanagibas with a 7x2 Okudo Suita with tomo. It produces a beautiful finish...with an incredibly sharp edge. Of course you could go up from there to a fine Asagi or something...but I prefer the finish off the Suita.

Hi Keith, I have a few stones with labels that I would either like to clean up some, or preserve, do you have any videos by yourself or other information you can direct me towards for this? Thank you
@KeithVJohnson1
@KeithVJohnson1 4 года назад
Larry Tipson hi, unfortunately ,I don’t. I avoid making recommendations on preserving labels because the process can go very wrong very quickly.

Kieth, my Tomo sticks on one edge of my Nakayama. I measured it for flatness with my Starettet straight edge and it is flat all over. I recall one of your videos with the pencil test. So how flat is flat? I heard of covalent bonding between two surfaces where supposedly some of the electrons from each item actually stick to each other. Anyway on that edge It wants to stick like crazy. I make sure that edge has plenty of water so it hydroplanes at that edge. Have you experienced this? Thanks, love your website.

"Mizu" 水 means "water", "aoi" 青い means blue. Very entertaining video!
@KeithVJohnson1
@KeithVJohnson1 4 года назад
Correct, when used to describe a Jnat, the term Mizu is referring to a type of blue/grey color that reminds the viewer of ocean waters.
