Anna, the fourth sister! I loved the relationship between Anna and lady Mary.

It was so nice to see that these actors genuinely seem to be friends or at least have healthy respect for one another. They frequently appeared together outside of the series.

Haha, I know it’s just a typo or an autocorrect, but I got a good laugh thinking of Anna as an abusive substance.

This was done so early in the series so they’re getting used to their own characters and the other characters. I would like to see another interview like this done after the third year or so.

You are not spoiling anything. I've seen all seasons. The first season let me to want to watch more. And I did rewind briefly to drama and funny scenes or when I missed a drama because someone made me laugh.

I love the love story with Lady Mary in season 1 and 2. She is so hard on falling in love, but convincing herself finally she did.

Looks like pretty much everyone loves Michelle, while I have to admit that I prefer Joanne in this particular interview, for the way she talks and the things she says. She's speaking very fluently, which I like and deem a sign of being frankly open.

Joanne is fabulous! So down to earth and her character has that vulnerability where you just want to protect her and become her friend. Michelle is awesome as well :-)

Michelle just inspires me as an actress, but yes, Joanne is more charismatic here, and engagaed in the interview. But heavens knows how I would be in an interview, espescially when this was at the start of Downton Abbey.

How come there are no interviews with Lady Mary and Lady Edith? That would be a super cool interview
@Fox1nDen

+Jack Daniels maybe they do not get along, like the characters do not get along, though I can't see what Edith did to deserve Mary's hatred. Mary despises Edith and says so every time she gets a chance. At least it is behind her back now. I can't wait for Edith to rebuke Mary for having been such a cold-hearted sister to her. it is the one completely unattractive thing Mary does, her cruelty to Edith.

I want the last season to explain or expose why Mary hates Edith so much. Her recent comment about Edith was, "A monkey will write out the whole Bible if given enough time"--really, how creepy and uncool and cruel. This relationship does not reflect on Mary very well. I don't suppose she really had deep affection for sister Sybil either, and was secretly happy Sybil had chosen to be a rebel against "standards" by marrying Tom. Mary is not cruel to Tom which I find quite curious since he is the real rival to her by the last season. She does not see it, maybe that is why. Mary thinks her son George will run everything the way she raises him to. That takes so much for granted, including time, which we will not have since this is the last season. We can hope for a future movie that reassembles the cast some years down the road, Julian Fellowes may be already working on scripts. Look how many Batman films there were without as many story lines.... If I was a production studio I'd be going after this kind of future. In fact I will be surprised if it is not already in the works. Can't wait til the scene where Edith feeds back to Mary what a cold heart she has had. A sister just wants acceptance, that Mary has never shared, and why? We have no explanation why. What has Edith ever done to Mary to deserve her bitter hatred and vile put downs? Mary gets along with Anna because Anna has no power at the same social level. Maybe it is all about money and power, like the heirs that would rather kill each other than let someone else get the throne...

I've seen interviews with Michele Dockery saying that she and Carmichael are very good friends who socialize a lot off-set. I think the on-set relationship is typical bitchy sister stuff. Like Lady Cora says, "You think they'll be like 'Little Women', and instead they're at each other's throats from dawn 'til dusk."
@therra1101
@therra1101 8 лет назад
yeah it is just bitchy sister stuff, edith is not so nice to her either, in the first season she always has these remarks to her, and I do think that mary and sybil relationship is a lot better, also because sybil is younger and doesn´t care that much about the fact that mary is the "most beautiful" one and that she shoulf inherit and all that while edith doesn´t have the strenght of character in the beginning and is just envious of mary

I think it's rivalry, rivalry of who's the prettiest? Who's daddy and mommy's favourite? Who gets the most suitors? Who gets the best position? Who inherits the most? Etc. Rivalry and bitter resentment.

Mary and Edith antagonise each other particularly in the early years. I think life would have been pretty dull and isolating. All they could do for excitement is wind each other up. In the early years they were quite young and protected. They were really like teens today, who fight and get moody for no real reason. I think of my sister and I, we could have each other in tears in 5 mins flat because we know what buttons to push. I think they also see each other quite clearly. Mary sort of casts a spell on many people with her charm and beauty, and this tics of Edith because she knows what Mary is really like, and it tics off Mary that Edith knows the real her and could expose her at any moment.

@@mystique592 Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Also, this was about how they were treated, not who is actually the most beautiful.

Instead of leaving a blanc/black space between answers, why didn't you put up the questions in text, would have been so much nicer and we would understand better what the actresses are responding to... !😉

I can't believe it would have been boring to be a rich lady in the early 1900's. I am sure those ladies found a lot to keep themselves busy, spending time with family, visiting friends, lovers and husbands, traveling, shopping, sight seeing, threatre for plays, music, opera, reading books, magazines, hobbies, painting, sketching, long walks in the summer, games, picnics, boating, writing, politics, clothes fittings, studying, music lessons, balls, parties, birthdays, hunting, riding, christmas, easter, church, charity work etc, etc of course there is also breakfast, lunch and long evening dinners and cocktails. I think they had interesting and busy lives
@davidthaler7018

I think it would depend on where you live. The activities you describe seem to be more in line with someone who lives in a city like London. This family lives in the country and as you can see, people come to visit them and local entertainment is usually HOSTED by the estate--garden parties, flower shows, cricket matches, dinner parties, holiday celebrations. The exception would be the Thirsk Fair, which isn't theater in the West End.

All you say is true - but there were huge constraints on young women. I think their lives were incredibly narrow and they were bored to death...'til the war changed everything.
@ladyfoxwf1075

Yeah but all the while they have to be opressed by men, they can't vote, and they could be stuck in abusive marriages, or homes, they didn't spend much time with their parents as kids, and they might not have any siblings, or be popular with the crowds. Also if their family was in scandal, they would be shunned. Furthermore, they could die in birth like Sybil did, and they had to always be careful about what they said and felt, because of the strong backward views they had. Alot of fun stuff seemed unladylike to many.

@Ladyflo I'm there right now, and let me tell you, it's interesting and very boring. But I'm sure if I did find a job, it would be so shit that it would be boring and tiring. Unless I magically find an acting or extras or volunteer job.
