I feel sorry for people who do this kind of comparison between artists. Without Nina Simone, this arrangement would not have come into place in the first place. Nor would have Bowie's, which was a tribute to her. But that's not the point. We can appreciate each rendition in its own respect without having to compare them. Each may sound 'better' at different times to different people. It need not be constant or inflexible. I think it would greatly enrich your experience as a listener if you thought of it this way.
