31 October 1980
Metropol, Berlin, Germany
Composers : Gary Brooker, Keith Reid, Matthew Fisher
This song is Procol Harum cover
The Band :
Lead Guitar - Cliff Goodwin
Bass - Howard Hersh
Keyboards - Larry Marshall
Piano,Arranger - Mitch Chakour
Drums - B.J. Wilson
Vocals - Maxine Greene
Vocals - Ann Lang
Vocals - D.E. Washburne
Lyrics :
We skipped the light fandango
Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
I was feeling kinda seasick
But crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
The waiter brought a tray
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale
She said:"There is no reason
And the truth is plain to see."
As I wandered through my playing cards
And would not let her be
One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast
And although my eyes were open
They might just as well been closed
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
Her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale
Guitar Solo :
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first was ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale

I asked the vicar on my wedding day if they would play Whiter shade of pale , he declined said no , I will not have that being played in this church. I was so upset that I told the organist to play what ever he wanted, if I couldn't have this music just play whatever ! We have been together now for nearly 50 years. When my time comes to say goodbuy to all who have loved me ,this Whiter of shade of pale music will be the very last thing I hear ,

As usual, Mr. Cocker used both his incredible talent, and his knowledge of how to blend with an enormous backing band, to crank out a great cover of a classic tune. The original Procol Harum tune, is pretty amazing. This doesn't top it (something Joe has actually done a couple of times with his covers), but it's right there with it, which for a cover is pretty special. Man, Mr. Cocker was an absolute favourite of mine. He'll be missed.

@Rosetta Henry joe cocker sang mostly cover songs. He always made a unique interpretation. He is often called a soul or a blues singer, but he didn’t give a crap for categories. Unchain My Heart, Marjorine, When I’m 64, You Are so Beautiful, With a Little Help From My Friends (the Woodstock performance kinda stunned Americans, who didn’t realise he was just like that normally) Wjat ekse…? Up Where We Belong was a duet & movie theme that they won a Grammy for.

Timeless Joe Cocker. My generation was so captivated with the music that spewed out of Woodstock 1969 and the '70s. The man is a legend. I note that there are still fond comments coming from Jose and CiDYYJ in the last few days and earlier. There is a whole few generations that grew on this. Absolutely a nostalgic journey down memory lane. I am sure, a lot of you out there would agree. The world has missed him since 22 December 2014. My thanks to Andranik Azizbekyan for sharing.

Its sad were losing these entertainers who are so great. They sing with purpose. sharing Gods gift they have received. God bless all the rockers, the blues, the soul singers, I wish to thank them all. For the ones who have left us, God has the best entertainers you could ask for. RIP to all and you will never be forgotten !!!!!!

Straight business my brother! I wish this type of artist would come back, real soul, talent and the ability to draw the listener into the performance. I miss the likes of Jimi, Janis, and of course Joe, they could draw emotions from you when they performed. Stay well, safe and peace to you and yours.

How much better live was Joe he owned every song he sung, the original artist’s would have been in awe of his talent. I’ve only seen him live once and if I had to pick the 3 best concerts I’ve ever been to his was No# 1 absolutely brilliant the world has lost a great talent RIP Joe

I just noticed that the drummer in this video is BJ Wilson from Procol Harum, I suppose he's played WSOP a few thousand times by this point
@pdfico
@pdfico 2 года назад
I would note that Joes recreation of songs are usually not just better than the originals but devastatingly better as to make the originals look like a pale comparison. But in this case I would say that the original Procal Harum version was vastly better in every single way especially the vocals, which is a rare occurrence. That’s not to take away from Joe but to show how great Brookers performance was for this song particularly.

The late, great Joe Cocker. There will NEVER be anyone like him. Just think: There are singers that I chuckle when they can't hit a note. With Joe, you want that! I know it sounds crazy, but Joe could do things with not hitting a note that no one will EVER be able to do. We miss you sooooooooooooooooooooooo much Mr. Cocker.

What a great rendition. Joe Cocker, the back-up singers, and the musicians FEEL the music. I just couldn't imagine how I would feel if I watch this live. I can feel the music just watching it on RU-vid. Rest in peace, Joe. You may be gone, but you're still with us.

I appreciate music so differently as a 44 year old man, than I would ever allow myself to in immaturity. A HUGE Disservice, But,Better late than never. I've however said for over 20 years, that I'd want the Original played as my Casket was being carried out. Joe brings a different depth than Procol Harem does. So Amazing!
