The great Joe Maphis plays hot rod guitar on his Mosrite Special double neck guitar. Joe is one of the unknown great guitar players who influenced generations of guitar players. Listen to Marty Stuart, Vince Gill, Ricky Scaggs and a host of other present country guitar players and you will hear Joe. Deke Dickerson's guitar style is heavily influenced by Joe. This was recorded in 1965 or 66.

The story goes that Joe was the very first guitar player to mimic the fiddle player. He invented those cascade scales way back in the late 30's!

The Fiddle player is the great Buddy Spicher, played on tons of records - you have heard him everywhere and might not know it...

+Erich Hubner Yes a Pennsylvania boy; Buddy told me he used to hitch-hike rides on Saturdays from DuBoise Pa to Wheeling to make on the Jamboree.

The copy of Water Baby Boogie I have on the Bear Family re-issue "Fire On The Strings" is a medium speed 1x4x5 blues boogie!

Go on eBay and search for Joe Maphis. Buy a copy of Gospel Guitar. That is the first one with the big double neck and white Standel. You will hear all of the best reverb and echo you ever wanted to hear Joe play with. The EccoFonic will really get you going!

Thanks for the information. Is it best to learn "Fire on the Strings" and THEN "Water Baby Boogie", just to be on the safe side? - Bear, Smokey T.

Wrong on the date. It is around 66. I already checked with either Deke or Jody Maphis

It seems like he doesn't play open-string licks or cascade scales as often as most country players do.

Why yes it is. Looks like he's having a hard time keeping up with Joe.

, I cant help think how cool it would be to hook him up to some serious reverb,..." "serious reverb" would have made him sound muddy I think. He plays the notes so fast that the 'fattening' effect of reverb would not have worked well.

Hal Rugg, Joe Maphis and Buddy Spicher...what the hell, couldn't they find any GOOD players?!? *sarcasm*

Maphis is Legend. Spicher & Hal Rugg sold their souls to Jazz, not Joe.
