Very interesting to see John discussing this with his sons -- and maybe they're helping him get a clearer picture of why his older brother Tom might have been getting frustrated. I've read John's autobiography (great book, btw) and you can see how the two of them were more-or-less equal partners during the Blue Velvets/Golliwogs days -- but when they became CCR, John's talent and drive and, let's face it, controlling tendencies all came to the fore, pushing Tom and the rest of the band into the background. John wouldn't even let the others sing backing vocals on the tracks (except for 3 occasions, including the excellent "Who Will Stop the Rain") -- they weren't allowed to attend the mixing sessions or anything else. There's no question CCR owed its success largely to John's powerful vocals, his guitar playing and those amazing songs he wrote -- but if The Beatles could find space on their albums for Ringo to sing at least one song, surely CCR could have found space for Tom Fogerty (who was a pretty good singer too) to have at least one or two tracks per album as well. That said, John Fogerty is already an American legend and one of the great composers of the 20th century.

Fully agree. Tom was a better singer than George and Ringo, yet he was never utilized
@davidkirkham6497
@davidkirkham6497 2 года назад
John wouldn’t let the others sing background because as the producer, it is his job to make a record the best sound he could. On some songs he did let them sing background or he used his own voice overdubbed as he felt it sounded better! As far as not letting attend producing/mixing sessions is because there can only be 1 producer that can put together a song & make it a hit!

John is an amazing talent and wrote many brilliant songs. That said, no band that he has ever fronted since Credence captures the magic of those tunes. Change a member and the band changes. Replace all the members and the band and music change a lot. You can say what you want about their behavior, actions or decisions but Tom, Stu and Doug were integral parts of the CCR sound. Even John alluded to that in his HoF acceptance speech. I don't think he was just trying to be nice. He knows. Glad to see he has put much of the bitterness (albeit well deserved) behind him.

Agree. I've seen John and his band recently...and as good as they are, the Creedence 'sound' is missing. But for me, the bottom line is John was the genius behind CCR. Yes, the others definitely contributed but John was the driving force. If only the others recognized that, CCR would be mostly intact and still playing together today. CCR's songs are still very popular today...which is a testament to John. For those that may not agree, the 'Mardi Gras' album highlighted that.

Uh, not really. Fogerty is a genius songwriter, but he can't play bass like Stu Cook and certainly can't drum like Doug Clifford. I'd even wager he couldn't hold down a groovy rhythm guitar part quite like Tom could. What made CCR so great was the musicality and musical chemistry between all four members. That's although he wrote many fantastic songs afterward, John never recaptured that same CCR energy in the rest of his work. He was def the leader but it was a collective sound that made it great.

Why would you rock the boat and throw all this away, because they had no talent for writing marketable songs! I think John may have been writing about this fact in his song Center Field, "put me in coach, I'm ready to play", John knew they weren't up to CCR's level, of quality music and it signaled the downfall/breakup of the group, just because he gave up "control"! Strange how CCR and Steppenwolf had similar issues at similar times, both "Johns" were the leaders and song writers, both had issues and fallouts with members that still exist to this day, both had an album where the "Johns" gave in and let other group members write and sing their own songs, "Mardi Gras" for Creedence and "At your birthday party" for Steppenwolf, and both still have past members that the Johns refuse to work with or even talk to. I know Steppenwolf's John Kay did it because as he said "I wasn't going to go back to starving thanks to someone's immaturity" and they both felt that they had to take control to some degree, and I know that translates itself into some people having the opinion of them that they are "greedy" or "bossy", but they both did what they felt that they had to do.

I saw Steppenwolf's Behind The Music episode a long time ago and John Kay was blunt, tough, but he was right. He was right. Certain members were using the Steppenwolf name as a brand and there was even some versions without John Kay. He had to react to the bullshit around him. Cook and Clifford should be grateful to John Fogerty. His songs put food on the table, roofs over their heads and clothes on their backs. They are the most ungrateful musicians in the world. Even when they play his songs under a diluted tribute band version of CCR, they still talk trash about him and sue him for no reason. Quite frankly, if it had been a collaborative effort, and John did not micro manage the band, I strongly feel the music would not have been nearly as good, and may very well had been a flop. Then no one would have ever heard of CCR. They might have died as The Pollywogs. That would have been a Rock & Roll tragedy. CCR was John’s vision. He knew what was good, and stayed very focused on producing excellent results. He obviously worked very hard, and he had to be sure all was done right. Mardi Graw pretty much proved that. Perhaps from the start, John should have made it clear he was going to be calling the shots, and if that’s not what the others were interested in, it’s ok, he’s say, I’ll find someone else. A lot of mistakes were obviously made in those early years, but it seems to me the other band members should have better appreciated Johns obvious song writing and music producing talents, and thanked the Lord for their good fortune.

Look. With such amazing talent as John had (still has) it's not uncommon for these things to go to your head (not necessarily saying it did), which is possible. But at the same time, the others in the band should have accepted the fact that John was just better at leading the band and getting the songs composed to a standard that was then, and still is now, Credence Clearwater Revival. Just my two cents :P

I think Tom was certainly jealous of John’s talent. Natural to have that sibling rivalry but sometimes it goes too far. Too bad it was never reconciled. Lots of brothers in rock bands had similar issues. Oasis! The Kinks! The Black Crows! Etc.

Check out Steve Gorman's memoir about his time in the Black Crowes. The Robinson brothers have fought each other only to fight other band members, especially Steve. Yet it's ironic that they , except Steve, got back together around the time the book came out. As far as I know, they should be thanking Steve and apologize to him for the immaturity they unleashed on each other and on him.

Its good to hear all the stories about all the bands, but its like no one ever wants John to talk about good memories or thoughts on other groups. Rather than hearing this same stuff again and again, I'd like to know if he liked or met Steve Miller ? They seem sort of the like same type of person. They may have only crossed paths once at a festival prior to Woodstock. Did John listen to The Byrds ? What are his thoughts on Brian Jones liking CCR music in 1969 ? Was he a fan of Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers, ZZ Top ? Was the Status Quo version of Rockin' All Over The World his only source of income in the 70's ? What songs did CCR do covers of in the bars before 1968 ? Let him have a real interview for a change !

It's all about perspective. John describes the photo shoot negatively as "fumbling around in the forest". This is the summer of 1969, and your band has finally made it big. Couldn't an aimless photoshoot after recording your third album be a playful thing? A fun break from the rehearsal studio? (A bit like The Beatles "mad day out" the summer of '68). The other members probably thought of it that way. In their perspective, John with his direction wanted to stop the fun, get it all over with and go home. I understand John's need for efficiency, but also the others' need for joking around. And the resulting cover suffered a bit, in my opinion. The three "others" are standing awkwardly in the back like soldiers. (Perhaps they were doing it deliberately to mock John's direction, as mocking him seemed to be their recurring way of coping with him.) John is the only one who seems relaxed on the Green River album.
