I took a two day handgun class with John Lovell and I remember I struggled to bend down to pick up my empty mags. At the time I was and still am following a Starting Strength program. My legs were sore from the squats and deadlifts the day prior. My two worlds collided then. Nice to see these guys cross paths.

This is one of the few things that I disagree with mark on, it’s called fitness not brokenness, at a certain point you should not be worried about 5lbs because eventually you’re gonna fuck your shit up like If you can deadlift 405 what’s the benefit of deadlift 455 when the risk is fucking your shit up in the process lol

This is the most productive podcast you've done, besides that one with Stan Efferding, which by the way, successfully got me doing more research on dieting and I'm now eating meat again. Like the guy said here, if you side step the ego a little bit and make some good points, it goes a lot further than with just an offensive, dismissive position with no explanation. You're also letting people talk more which of course is great.

Excellent podcast. We would also say that both Rip and John deal in industries where the vast majority of practitioners have a very over-inflated sense of their ability levels and what they believe is the 'right' way to do it. There are also a ton of people in the shooting industry and the strength training industry who are high level competitors/operators who have absolutely no idea how to teach. I think many grapplers believe that strength equals large muscles and a lack of flexibility and mobility, which is not ideal for grappling. Many old school grapplers look at Marcelo Garcia, who regularly talks about how he never lifted while he was regularly competing in grappling... and so if it worked for him, it must work for everyone. About 1% of grapplers are legit competitive athletes, while the rest of us compete periodically to gauge our progress or never compete and just do BJJ because it's fun. I am a cop and both strength and grappling ability is important to me... I have to push disabled vehicles down highways, lift heavy things like trees or light poles that fall into the road or extremely obese people that fall down way more than I have to arrest violently resisting suspects. Both attributes are extremely beneficial and so I do them often (along with dry firing and live fire training at the range often). Anyway... great podcast by both of you. Rip, you've had two of my favorite people on recently (John and Stan) and nailed both podcasts... keep up the great work!!

@@jkennedy28 when you train bjj everyday multiple times like Marcelo Garcia you don't need to go to the gym or sometimes even have the ability to add more workload because you can't recover fast enough. Bjj classes usually have a long group warmup, calisthenics session with pushups squats etc and long training sessions with intense live rolling at the end. Live rolling is just like sprinting hard. You can't sprint hard everyday and lift hard. Its too much unless you don't have a life or job outside of training or have access to anabolics.
@jkennedy28
@jkennedy28 4 года назад
Mr. Monitor I am certainly not Marcelo Garcia and I think the majority of grapplers are nowhere near his skill level or train as often as he does. I was referring to the average BJJ practitioner, who trains a couple days a week for 1-2 hours a day.
@mr.monitor.
@mr.monitor. 4 года назад
@@jkennedy28 okay It was you that brought up Marcelo G in the first place🤪 I wasn't arguing about that. Was just pointing out why he can get away without lifting and probably doesn't have enough free time to add more training.
