To me, this is just the true definition of virtuosic guitar playing. Shredding is impressive, but almost anyone can do that with enough practice. This, on the other hand, is having the *skill* to shred, but knowing how to hold back and only play what you *need* to play. Musicianship, particularly the blues, is as much about the space between notes as it is the notes themselves. John Mayer also uses more than one technique in every performance -- slapping, harmonics, finger picking, etc. to add even more depth and personality to his playing. It is a sight to behold....pure talent.
prctice everything at quarter the time to a metronome even if you can play it and sing it separately at full speed. That way you cant bullshit your way out of learning where each note and each syllable is within the harmonic and rhytmic framework.
For a blues artist singing and playing guitar is too mainstream. Many people say he's influenced by greats like bb king, clapton, henrix but i think he is gary b b coleman reborn.
Amy mjik hahaha just because you find him handsome dosent mean it makes him the best guitar player :P joe satriani steve vai john petruci and alote more are just as good or better deppending on the style they play
Amy mjik Where does that put Duane Allman, Jimi Hendrix, Dickey Betts, Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, BB King, Elmore James and the rest of them?
i personally believe mr.john mayer is one of the best guitarists of recent day.very hendrix based.yet innovative and when live very good at improvising
What kind of good vibes shit is he smokin, and where can I get some? Lol. Seriously though, this proves John Mayer is way more than just a stereotypical pop artist and that he can actually play some pretty damn good blues music. I just wish he would make a strictly blues album.
@@alexmickmusic and adding onto that, you might want to check out Continuum and Where The Light is, although Where The light is is a live album, it has blues songs on it which are brilliant
This #JohnMayerTrio performance is great! John's 🎸 solo at 1:24 reminded me of #BBKing so much I teared up. ♥ John performed with B.B. and told him he listened to recordings of B.B. before each trio show to get his head into the blues space. There's no greater tribute to a blues legend than to continue his legacy. Keep on playing, John!
To play with a legend such as BB is a blessing, and im sure john is not the only one who felt that blessing as did Eric for quite a few sessions.... But noone will ever be able to recreate that magical touch of BB's fingers making 'lucille's unmistakable tremolo ball!
If all I'd ever know about John Mayer was his pop songs, I'd have completely ignored him... But he's prove himself to be top shelf in blues guitar and that just blows me away... You can't keep the company he keeps with the legends of blues and not be the real deal...
Crazy to think I couldn’t stand this guy in middle school bc of “Your Body is a Wonderland”. So glad I saw this through bc now I’ll see him every time he comes through my town. Guy is a guitar god that plays with as much soul as I’ve ever witnessed during my existence.
I think him, Lady Gaga and probably some others did the same thing. Its unfortunate, but music like blues/jazz just doesn't sell. The general public and radio listening folks don't care about it... to further illustrate my point - go listen to the radio and tell me how often you hear songs that aren't "Your Body is a Wonderland" and the other few big hits he has - you won't hear them. Same with Gaga. Obviously I cant know this for sure, but I'd be willing to bet money they started out with pop because they wanted to make a living performing music and it was either pop or it be a weekend thing for the rest of their lives. Now that they've got a solid income flowing in, they can make the music they want to make and do what they want to do. It sucks.
Awesome version of a classic song. John Mayer has a very unique voice. You can really tell how much blues music influences his guitar playing. John's guitar playing is full of soul and I hear alot of SRV style guitar licks which makes this song that much sweeter.
John Mayer is an enigma to me. Such a talented guitar player, plays with the dead, loves the blues, but he only releases pop albums. It's quality pop, but pop none the less. I wonder why he doesn't mix it up and release some music that's more in line with this version of him.
Look up the John Mayer Trio..... it's not much but it's absolutely worth a listen. He plays with the same trio on his 2007 live album as well. Thank god youtube exists.
Too bad most people only see john as a pop artist he's a super fusion of all the blues greats..if only the radio played good music then people like him wouldn't have to sell out
It gets tiring telling people, he's more rock/ blue's, they're the ones missing out, Eric Clapton said he was a genius on the guitar, that's enough for me.
He is not sold out. He simply gives what his label wants, he needs to earn money anyway, and his album are all amazing. He is now playing on smaller venues to be able to play what he wants to play, with trio. When he needs money, just go go big stages. Simple. If i were him, i would've done the same thing.
Even among the greatest guitarists of all time, there are few who can perform both instrumentally and vocally simultaneously in the way that John does in this clip.
Gibson ES-335. Guitar has been around for over 50 years; a staple for jazz, blues, and rock players. I'm sure some country players have used them, too. They're great guitars; the semi-hollow body gives a rich acoustic resonance.
Although people will hate it when others say that John is one of the best guitarist out there, I definitely believe it to be true. Most guitar fanboys are focused of speed without meaning they don't appreciate the richness of meaning of John's style. He's not just a guitarist, he's an actual musician.
Damm man, John mayer is in my top 3 influences Such a great musician We don't speak about guitar playing here no more, it's music, it's one and it's whole ANd this dude's got it
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone. It's not warm when she's away. Ain't no sunshine when she's gone And she's always gone too long anytime she goes away. Wonder this time where she's gone, Wonder if she's gone to stay Ain't no sunshine when she's gone And this house just ain't no home anytime she goes away. And I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know Hey, I ought to leave the young thing alone, But ain't no sunshine when she's gone, only darkness everyday. Ain't no sunshine when she's gone, And this house just ain't no home anytime she goes away. Anytime she goes away. Anytime she goes away. Anytime she goes away. Anytime she goes away.
I have a theory that Steve Jordan was supposed to cut out with Pino at 3:20 when John waved them off, but either he forgot to or decided not to. The result was spectacular and my favorite part of this! The bass drum triplet, snare crack and hi hat sizzle and the way it fits with what John is doing and perfectly leads back into the groove. So good! And you can see John crack a little smile right after it at 3:27. I’ve been coming back to watch this video for years, lol.
Absolutely, that timing in the pocket is the best I’ve ever seen Steve and Pino are perfect, at 1:55 too... they make it look easy, I couldn’t even get timing like that editing it in protools...
Gosh, imagine being the guy in blue at 1:58. Gotta love seeing someone straight vibing and enthralled like that, and knowing you'd be the exact same way
You need check out everything he does. He is a beast!!! Check out Eric Clapton’s interview about John Mayer. Clapton says John is a “master”. That coming from Eric Clapton is like being divinely anointed.
