Johnny Carson's Practical Joke on Joan Rivers - Margaret Thatcher Impressionist (about 1983)

Johnny Carson plays an elaborate practical joke on Joan Rivers (about 1983). Because of her many jokes about the British Royal Family, Johnny Carson hires British actress Janet Brown - notable for playing Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher - to fool Joan Rivers into thinking she is the Prime Minister, who confronts and scolds Joan Rivers about her material.
Rivers' late husband Edgar Rosenberg is briefly seen in this video. In her panic while being confronted by "Margaret Thatcher", Rivers says: "Edgar, why don't you sit here?"
Due to the falling out between Joan Rivers and Johnny Carson after she left her position as permanent guest hostess on his show to host her own competing talk show on Fox, this has not been broadcast since 1985.

As a cameraman I worked with Joan for promos for the Joan Rivers Show in the 90s. We shot in Los Angeles on a stage with her. She got the star treatment from the producers. For lunch they brought in a trailer on the lot and catered lunch for her. When we cut and they called lunch, Joan announced she wanted to stay on the stage and have lunch with the film crew. Sitting around on apple boxes and folding hard chairs, she regaled us with jokes and stories all though our lunch break never going to her star trailer. She knew all our names. She was just the most fun, real and sweetest star I ever worked with. Loved Joanie Rivers.

Dawn Patrol, first of all: thank you for sharing this. Second: you make me somehow happy to know that someone I liked from TV was actually a nice person in real life, we all know the TV is all an illusion. Glad to know she had that quality of kindness to her. Greetings!

I read that she was very different from her stage persona and that she was very kind and generous. She was extremely grateful for her fans and just thankful that she was in a business that she loved. She never took her success for granted. She signed my copy of her book, “Still Talking” which I still have and treasure.

Yes she was very funny.. but you really needed a big name to promote you, and that is what Carson did. His show was number 1 in America.. and she was on it MANY times thanks to Johnny Carson. Do you think Rodney Dangerfield would have ended up the comic star that he was without Carson? NO

I do not think we have become thin skinned due to political correctness but because the majority of the American society has become so overweight that their skin is stretched so thin that everything hurts their exposed nerves. When I was a kid there were very few fat people and they always had a great sense of humor though I never made fun of anyone. Now that so many are fat, they have become BFP or “bitter fat people” it may go back to the old expression misery loves company. All I can hope for is that people will lighten up and realize that laughing is truly the best medicine and the more you allow yourself to laugh the better you will feel!

I remember watching this TV special when it first appeared on NBC. The only other thing I remember about it was a "reenactment" Johnny did, where he recounted how some famous person had a special room in his house where everything was upside down -- sofas and chairs bolted to the ceiling, light fixtures coming out of the floor, pictures upside down on the walls, etc. Whenever the celebrity had a party at his house, someone would invariably get blackout drunk, and the other guys there would carry him into the room, put him on the floor and then watch through one-way glass as he woke up and stumbled around, confused as all hell. The show built a mockup of that room, and Johnny played "drunk" to show the viewers how the prank would usually play itself out. IIRC, the TV special where that prank and this one on Joan Rivers appeared was so popular that it led to the creation of "TV's Bloopers and Practical Jokes," which I wish they'd bring back what with all the nostalgia shows on TV right now. One last thing as a bit of trivia: Janet Brown also played the British PM in the James Bond film "For Your Eyes Only."

When Johnny explains the setup and states, "the victim must not have time to analyze what is going on" really played out here when the imposter gave Joan the letter. If she was able to analyze the situation, she would have realized that there is no way that on a chance meetup that Margaret Thatcher could have had a letter prepared for her. I'm actually surprised that they risked this and didn't go with handing her a phone with Johnny on the end.

My favorite practical joke on Joan was when they led her on for a few years about taking over the Tonight Show. Wish I could be with her when she found out Leno, the idiot, was taking over for Johnny.

He was saying she "copped out" a couple times. But that was toward the end after she tried to explain over and over and over that they are just jokes and the woman was just going on and on. I don't think she was trying to "backpedal" so much as she was just trying to get the woman to shut up. We've all done it, after someone just won't accept what you're saying and just keeps going you just eventually give them the "uh huh! Yeah! Sure! No problem! Wow! Okay sure thing!" to end it all.

Thanks. This is gold, and I remember the broadcast. I seem to recall David Steinberg getting pranked. Great stuff.

[Prince Charles] "...and I hope it works out." Prescient perhaps - Joan was an astute observer of people, there's no doubt about that. Miss her :'(
