I bought my first boat ever!!!
Follow along on my jon boat build project from start to finish. This video shows step by step instructions on how to install a floor in a jon boat as well as what products I used. Make sure to also watch part 2 where I show how to do the framing and install the casting deck.
I was shopping around for an aluminum jon boat for about 2 years. I wanted a flat bottom boat so I could get into shallower waters, and I also wanted to be able to build a casting deck to walk around and be up higher which is better for seeing into the water. I ended up finding this Marlon SP14 for sale at Advanced Marine Lake Belwood and it was exactly what I was looking for.
I am super excited to use the new boat this fishing season and make some great content!

Great vid. I bought my 16 foot Marlon (V hull) last year as well for ocean fishing (BC). As you know they come stripped down to just the hull, so I also did pretty much the same build. I put a new 30 HP Mercury on it with a centre consul and it tops out at 25 MPH with 2 persons. I am very pleased with it. One extra step I took (ocean salt issue) was to put Shark Hide on it, 2 coats to protect the aluminum, inside and out. First day out I hauled in four salmon, yup, fishy boat. LOL Enjoy.

@@johnnym7904 Yes I am still pleased with it and a ton of folks have made comments on it. You would enjoy it. Would you put a centre console or tiller only?

@@twsd Still having a great with mine. I have mine fully rigged out. I built a floor system with vinyl wrapping, centre consul steering, 30 HP Merc, Captains seat, second seat, aluminum side storage, 2 down riggers with aluminum reinforcement mounts etc.

Great Video. Easy to follow and and I like the attention to detail of the build! I purchased a Marlon SP12 last fall and have been debating on doing the same with the floors. I did install 2 boat hatches in the middle seat for storage and keeping things clutter free. I mainly still water fish in the BC interior. Keep up the great videos and hope to see some videos of you fishing in your boat soon.

That’s definitely a good option. I needed the flat bottom for some of the super shallow weedy bays that I fish.

How stable is it? Could I be in the water and pull myself into it without swaming it? Will it sink if it’s swamped or will it float?

How stable is this boat?

I have only tested it with the floor and deck installed, so that might have added some extra stability, but it is very stable. I’m able to stand on the gunnel (edge of the boat frame) and it still feels super stable. I primarily fish alone, with a 2nd person you can still throw each other off balance a bit with sudden movements but usually don’t feel like I’m going overboard.

I have owned boats for over 50 years now. Never heard of anyone ever doing a leak test on a new boat LOL???????????????

Every jon boat build video I've watched started with a leak test, so I figured why not! It's my first boat and first DIY project so better to be safe than sorry. Jon boats can get pretty banged up during shipping.

@@instaphippsyfishing Nice try.....No they don't . I have been monitoring fishing and boat vids for a large boating company for at least 2-3 hours a few days a week and have for years and have NEVER read of anyone doing that, except you..........

@@bobchapman5898 The 3-4 videos I watched before starting my boat project said they started with an initial leak test before starting the build, then did a final on the water float test after the build was complete. The very first video I watched was Tiny Boat Nation's "Leak testing the Jon Boat" video where he does a leak test with a garden hose. None of the videos I watched had a new boat, so it was probably unnecessary, but as I said it was my first boat and first project so I wanted to be extra cautious. To me it was worth the extra few minutes to test it before getting started.
