May 24: Joola states that they RESUBMITTED the Gen 3 paddles for approval even though they are "materially the same" as the previously approved Alpha paddles
June 4: USAP confirms these resubmitted paddles have FAILED testing, rendering all Gen 3 paddles in circulation illegal for USAP-sanctioned play...

It seems to me that the real problem with the Gen 3 paddles is that they produce a trampoline effect when the ball comes off the paddle. In a comment below, it is said that Zane Navratil says that the ball comes off these paddles "scary fast.: John Kew pickleball has done studies of reaction time of how fast the ball comes off the Gen 3 and other paddles. It is said that the average reaction time of a human is 1/4 of a second or 250 milliseconds. These paddles are producing a speed off of them that are faster than a human can react to. I have heard a number of pro pickleball players complain that the ball is coming off these paddles too fast. The new coefficient of restitution test that USA Pickleball has started using with their testing people shows the inbound and outbound speed of the ball coming off of the paddle. If the ball speed exceeds the reaction time of a human, then it does need to be banned because it changes the nature of the game.

Did you see the tweet from Zane Navratil talking about how scary fast the ball comes off the paddle? Then I played in a 4.0 league and this one guy was crushing the ball so hard I could barely track it. It feels like if the ball gets much faster we are fundamentally changing the sport of pickleball, and not in a good way.

My theory this whole time was that it was taking too long for them to approve the new paddles so I assumed they failed and USAPA was scratching their heads, getting lawyers and was figuring out how to finally handle the situation. People in my area just brushed it off as USAPA taking their time like they always do. It wouldn't have taken any time if the paddles passed.

I have been practicing with my Gen 3 for 7 weeks now, and I am unable to play with it in a local tournament this weekend. Also many people where I play are giving my grief about using an illegal paddle. And when I hit a great shot, some say its because I am using an illegal paddle. Good luck trying to get in touch with Joola because it does not have a customer service number. I have owned 4 jJoola paddles, but I will not purchase another because of the fact that the company does not have a customer service number.

For the sake of sportsmanship, you shouldn’t play any sport with gear that is deemed illegal by the sport. Just saying. You can’t keep a real rating if you use a banned paddle. It’s like using illegal golf clubs and wanting to insist your handicap is your handicap. It’s not. Your rating is founded upon using legal gear… So just know, your rating is not 3.5, it’s “N/A”.

Because when the manufacturer sells a different configuration than what was tested; it has to be assumed there is an advantage. From a business perspective, Joola would benefit from getting a model approved and then selling a hot model at stores. Why? Because if you play better with their paddle, you will buy again and recommend their paddle. It’s just inherently sketchy to not have tested products be the exact same as ones sold thereafter.

Bought mine a week before delisting and I played very well with it. The spin was amazing, but after a few weeks the spin is the same as my DBD when it was new. I think Joola big issue is quality control from their manufacturers. Some reviewers mention some ppl had gen 3 that would stick to your shirt. Other players mention one side with grit and another smooth. Mine felt similar to my DBD and didn't stick to my shirt. I bet those that stick to shirts are illegal. Wanna clarify 3 thoughts after you watch the vid: 1. These paddles are NOT illegal. They are just banned from USAP-sanctioned tournament play. I’ve heard about some local tournaments banning them but for the most part you are welcome to use the paddle in rec/local tournament play. 2. If Joola fixes the QC and resolves these issues with USAP these will be my favorite power paddles on the market there’s a lot to like about em just too much uncertainty to recommend rn 3. At the end of the day USAP is a part of “big pickle” as much as Joola is. This video covers the USAP side of the argument but I HIGHLY suspect we haven’t heard the full story yet… Thank you so much for watching!!!

Hi, the gen 3 are banned in all the local small non-sanctioned tournaments that I have registered in , because the tournament directors don’t want the legal liability in case someone gets their face hit by one of these gen 3 paddles. Techanically, they are not “illegal “, but in all practical senses they are illegal. None of the tournaments are allowing them, one of the big southern California pickleball club Los Cap banned them from the club. You will get a stigma (or teased) from playing /winning with these paddles during rec play . So in all sense these paddles are not playable anywhere.

so you can't make a paddle that is to good? I play with someone that has this paddle...do not notice a difference. I like to tease him when he makes a good shot...give the paddle all the credit. Here in Port st lucie Florida I have not heard one person complain about his use of this paddle and there are 24 filled courts with a lot of people.

So Joola lies to USAP about the paddles provided for testing, is informed they failed testing and Joola still releases banned paddles to the market. Then they lie to the public, saying their paddles conform to testing they know they've failed more than once. Still want to buy a paddle from a company that committed to deceiving you?

This is a terribly one sided report. Speaking of lawsuits, you never know, you may be on the receiving end of one soon. I hear Joola may be filing a $45 million dollar lawsuit against the USAP. I hope so, this is long overdue!. What independent body is overseeing the USAP testing model, holding them accountable, making them more timely, more responsive to their clients? The USAP is the problem! They have no transparency, and no accountability, they're a black hole. Who is the third party tester, what is their company name, what are their qualifications, what is their track record, years in business, customer list, customer references, what scientific equipment are they using, where are their detailed, published, scientific test results for each paddle tested? The USAP collects too much money, tens of millions of dollars, to be shrouded in such secrecy. Sunlight is the best disenfectant. Pickleball is going soft with all this talk about injury, liability etc. There's a simple solution, wear protective eyewear, compared to paddle prices, this is a simple, cheap solution. Don't dumb down pickleball more then it is. Be progressive, continue to evolve, keep an open mind, remember your viewers.

The first paddle I ever put my DNA on was a Gen 3. About 2 months ago a new indoor PB place opened. I was curious if they taught lessons. I go in and first thing I see is Joola sponsorship signage everywhere. All I could think of was ping pong. Anyway as the staff chatted me up about memberships and lessons they handed me a “prototype” of what turned out to be this Gen 3 as if I was supposed to start drooling. Not knowing squat about pickleball I was unimpressed because I had no comparisons. I took 3 lessons, all with the Gen 3. I could care less about any tournament level of play. Q: if I buy a paddle today/now and ignore the Joola circus, what would be recommended, since I have 3 hrs of Gen 3 experience as a comparison. I couldn’t tell you now the thickness or weight of what I lessoned with.

Start with a way cheaper paddle so that you can determine what type of player you think you are (e.g. you want to hit hard, you want to favor touch and control, you need faster hands at the NVZ). Then you'll know what you need or at least we'll be able to help you better. In the meantime, maybe, start with the almost go-to budget paddle: the Vatic pro prism flash (there are other good budget options but that's the one that I instantly remembered)

If your'e not having to "re-learn" your swing from another sport, I would think you wouldn't have issues with a power paddle. Just my thoughts.

Not sure why people are upset. There should be restrictions on the equipment so it doesn’t ruin the game. It’s why baseball is still played with wooden bats instead of aluminum, why golf has put restrictions on clubs, and tennis let equipment ruin the game. Equipment is why the game of tennis is one dimensional. Use to be, that you had serve and volley players and baseliners and combinations. Now it’s all one style because they didn’t get control of the equipment until the game was ruined. Glad to see pickleball step up to the plate before all the game has is bangers because of power paddles.

@@trumpisastump9382 style change is based on equipment not players. The point is it’s all the same, boring. Never have another McEnroe against conners, Sampras against Agassi. Now it’s all the same play. You want pickleball to end up all jack socks pounding the ball or the ben against the jack for variety in playing styles. In tennis you can’t even get a 6’10” to be able to play serve and volley. What would baseball be with aluminum bats. They changed golf because they could make the courses any longer to support the equipment change. As it is now, they are late to the table and all the players are bangers now, the time when you could have a Gary player, Fred funk, Brad faxon, are gone. Big hitters always had an advantage, but now the non big hitters have no chance because the courses are so long to accommodate equipment changes.

Tennis is a good example of nearly unchecked equipment "improvements". The game is nearly unrecognizable from that prior to c. 1985. Frames too large and stiff, strings too spinny. They should have stopped at flexible graphite frames, 85 sq. In. head size and no polyester strings.
