@Entropic0

Exactly this. I have respect for Peterson. That being said, psychology is closer to reading a crystal ball than it is to a real science. The entire field is basically wild speculation that oversimplifies extremely complicated processes. The idea that you can model a human brain, which is an aggregate of billions of neurons with trillions of synapses, using 5 super simple categories is just plain dumb (it's borderline delusional). At most you can say that those are high-level descriptors that generally apply to an average-case scenario but that's really it.
@stanhogenelst2555
@stanhogenelst2555 3 года назад
@@Entropic0 granted we can't produce any form of science that could measure and monitor human fysiology that accurately without taking hundreds of years to produce any usefull or meaningful data. Not yet anyway. And as much as I don't like the guess work in psychology. Psychiatry can be accused of pretty much the same thing. To give an example: we can't tell you with certainty if autism is a real disorder or if it's a combination of several complicated biases. I can tell you with certainty that that is a fact.
@kesselsol
@kesselsol 3 года назад
@@Entropic0 So you're saying its plain dumb (borderline delusional) to even try to understand the psychology of humans? I think it's waaaay better to try than to not to. Even if it's "crystal ball" science. We wouldn't get anywhere if people didn't try. Or else we'd be back to thinking that people with schizophrenia or tourettes are getting possessed by demons and should be burned at the stake. The big 5 catagories is an attempt to understand human personalities. Of course it's not perfect. But it's what we have that's work in progress. It's only until we test this theory out in the real world can we see what will work and won't work. (And they have, just look at the studies conducted on it's validity on countless subjects.) You seem to be only looking at how it won't work. Agreeableness, is a measure on prosocial-ness in people. Are you saying you can't measure how prosocial (trusting, affectionate, altruistic, cooperative, polite, kind, friendly, etc.) people are compared to each other? That some people can't be less or more prosocial than others? That's what you're saying if that believing in that measure is just borderline delusional. You don't need to know every neuron in the brain to understand others my dude.

No, he said the most important factor ‘we can measure’ and that’s a world of difference. IQ only accounts for 4% of the variance in success so it’s exceedingly unlikely that you’ll succeed or fail because of your IQ alone. There are many other factors that play a role we can’t directly measure or generalize within a population all of which are potential candidates for ‘single most important factor’. Regardless, they’ll still probably only tell a fraction of the story.

What if I'm tired while taking an iq test? Moody? Distracted? Hung over? Sick? Anxious? Over thinking it? What if I've come across a particular raven matrices question before and that gives me an advantage? It seems like my IQ score would vary by quite a bit given so many variables that could effect my performance. I would have to take a large number of tests and average my results to get a more realistic assessment of my IQ but even then, would I not perform better from repeatedly taking IQ tests and gaining knowledge and then applying it to every subsequent test? How can this be a reliable method to test intelligence? I understand it's probably the best we've got, though

It's not often I find a YT comment that actually makes me really think, so thank you for that. I think you really nailed it with the first question, and you could probably write your entire thesis about that one topic. Call it "the reliability of IQ testing with regard to sleep deprivation." TLDR; I'm not an expert, and I don't have a solution to the problem you proposed. To put it simply, sleep is unbelievably important in virtually ever aspect of your entire life. I haven't done the research myself and I'm not an expert on the subject, but I consider myself to be well-enough read to know how significant of an impact that sleep deprivation can have on your cognitive ability. More importantly, sleep deprivation over extended periods of time, say weeks or months or even years can almost certainly affect your IQ at a "fundamental level," meaning that you will progressively get more and more "smooth-brained" - not just bad at taking tests. Just to add some more complexity - your subjective sense of well-being as a result of the quality of your sleep is very unreliable. Meaning you could wake up and spend the day feeling like a million bucks but actually be more physically and cognitively impaired than if you were legally drunk. Of course this also works the opposite way - you could feel groggy as shit but technically be well-rested and ready to kick ass. Either way, I think it's safe to say that your test score would plummet dramatically if you took it while you were drunk lmao. This problem runs so deep that it most likely effects the entire sum of all IQ tests taken in the modern era - especially those taken in first world countries. We spend so much of our lives at war with melatonin (the endogenous "sleepiness chemical"), because electricity has allowed humanity to no longer be slaves of the day/night cycle. It makes me wonder if anybody has done a study on the relationship between chronic sleep deprivation and IQ. I would even speculate that you could see a pattern emerge based off of geographical location. If you live in a big city with tons of lights, noise, night-life, or 24 hour industry, you most likely have worse sleep than someone who lives their life as a cattle rancher in bum-fuck Texas where they get to see the stars every night. I don't have a solution that isn't better than the basic stuff you already proposed - multiple tests across a wide-enough but not-too-significant timeframe. I guess you would have to consider the possibility that people will get better at taking IQ tests, but they will almost certainly plateau at some point. You would definitely have to track the data across your entire study group to see how often people improve their test scores simply by taking multiple tests. Find the average rate of increase, and just consider that to be just another variable that you are aware of. If you've read this entire thing, which I feel is unlikely, thank you for your time. I'm also looking forward to reading your thesis on this subject because I sure as hell will not be writing it lmao.

Most clinicians will spend some time talking and building rapport before starting. If you tell them anything that suggests you’re not at your best or if they sense it based on their observation (e.g. you look sick or overly nervous), they’ll simply reschedule. If that’s not an option for whatever reason, they’ll note their observations in the report and discuss factors that have negatively impacted performance. Then they’re say something like: “based on these factors, this measure may not reflect the individual’s optional potential or best estimate of cognitive ability.”
@andrewscott5059
@andrewscott5059 Год назад
While certainly true that you won't always perform your best on a test like this, one interesting thing about IQ is that it generally is rather hard to actually improve upon in a practical sense. So while an individual score might be higher or lower than a "true" metric of your IQ (it is certainly possible to score above reality, you might just get lucky with some of the questions), those scores will be distributed around your actual number, and variance is limited. That is to say a person with an IQ of 150 even in a terrible state will not perform worse than maybe 130 or so, and even the luckiest person of IQ 130 is vanishingly unlikely to score 150. It may be a good idea to frame an IQ score as just one data point instead of YOUR data point. it's related to you but is not a perfectly precise measure.
@nitishbahalwala4697

only time we do not acknowledge iq assessment is when we score less, its indeed true that the assessment is not very liberal as it doesn't make everyone happy and based towards some well that's what it test, but its also true that It doesn't tests your dedication towards the goal, but if you do not acknowledge it, you are low on iq which is really ok, but if you discard existence of entire psychology it maybe your defence mechanism towards denial of already existing mental disorder. yes psychology can be rude but yes it originated to diagnose and treat conditions not to be politically correct

If IQ is "basically indistinguishable from working memory" (@3:09), then does that mean that ADHD individuals that have rapid neurological processing but an abnormal deficit in working memory score abnormally low on IQ tests (i.e. if they were neurotypical, would their scores be 3-5 points higher)? Or are there controls built into IQ tests to normalize the neurological difference between the neurotypical and neurodivergent test subjects for more standardized scores?

Nono, they are different things. Intelligence is basically the ability to solve complex problems while intellect is basically the interest you have on ideas, or the proclivity you have to engage towards them. For example you can be keen on economics and love to go deep on Hayek, Mises, Keynes, but at the same time, you can be not so bright. My opinion is that most times they are correlated but there are times which no. I had 75th in openness. 69 in openness to experience and 72 intellect. I'm glad I'm not more open than that haha. “In summary, if you want to get IQ scores for children, then your aim is to estimate the distribution of raw test scores in the general population for each age group of interest. There are various ways of doing this. The simplest approach is to get large samples of children at each year age of interest, and get means and standard deviations, and use them as above as appropriate. A more sophisticated approach involves smoothing the data to get an estimate of the systematic changes in both the mean and the standard deviation with age. Such a smoothed model can also be applied to get more fine grained estimates of a child who is say not exactly 10 years old, but rather 10 years and 5 months. There are many variations on this approach, and there are many issues to consider regarding the applicability of the same intelligence test to adults and children, especially as you get towards early childhood.” Angoff (1984) wrote a paper on this I think

Honestly, I never bought into much of psychology in the first place. There's some observed phenomena when it comes to behavior. Raymond Cattell was the person that did most of the statistical analysis on the big five traits. There's been studies that show iq can varry by a standard deviation depending on if someone is rewarded or not. IQ can show some things such as learning disabilities but I've met guys with a high IQ that aren't very successful. I have three degrees. Engineering, biology and philosophy. I've done some personality theory as well.

There must be elements of personality at work as well. High conscientiousness is important. What if you are smart and lazy? But we if we compare 2 people with same intelligence but one of them works harder it is probably the hard worker will tend to succeed. Additionally you have some external factor such as luck and opportunities and situations you find yourself in. So it is a big “stew” and unfortunately studies usually use simple models.

The last test I did, I did at midnight after working all day, and was half asleep. If I had done the test while fresh and rested, I definitely would have gotten different results. I also might have gotten different results if I did it with paper at a desk, rather than on my phone while in bed. Since IQ tests rank you compared with other people who did the same test, you could also get different results based on who else took the test. For example, the Vocabulary subtest of an IQ test battery is not a random set of items. They are chosen from a set of English words stratified by semantic knowledge difficulty. Likewise, his description of standardization and norming is simplistic and incomplete. He is presenting what clinical psychologists might know in general about test design and not a clear description of what is actually done. These inaccuracies have plagued theorizing about IQ since the beginning. IQ has been reified. It doesn't exist and as soon as we get beyond it, the better we will be in understanding human cognition and neuropsychology.

Your right: nothing is ever proven. However, having a high IQ gives you some of the prerequisites that are crucial for excellence. If you have an IQ that puts you in the top one percent of the world, parents who are academically driven, live in a first-world country, and belong to at least the lower-middle class, your chances of success compound dramatically. On the other hand, If you have a high IQ but live with a family that neglects education, your probability of success is reduced greatly. Even so, statistically, the fact that you are alive puts you on the .0001 percent of all of the creatures that could have existed in your place. Statistically, everything that exists is nearly impossible, and yet it exists, so no matter what, you have the ability to break the statistics and surpass everything that was thought possible. In my time researching about this, I have come to realize two things that allow me to accept the fact that it is ok to have lower cognitive abilities than the top 1 percent. (1) Don't lose hope in your capacity to achieve something because of a statistic. (2) Even if you have lower cognitive abilities that reduce the spectrum of fields in which you can become great, you should still strive to become the best version of yourself--most people, I believe, can understand how that is virtuous.

0:47 yes you can criticize every single finding in psychology that’s ever been made. If you wouldn’t be able to criticize all that is scientific, then it would not be science but metaphysics. Because you *can* criticize (and corroborate) every bit of science makes science scientific. Deprive science of that, and you have a load of nonsense.

He didn't say you can't criticize science, he said you can't criticize IQ without criticizing other psychology studies that derive from the same statistical ground, meaning that if you give any value to those other findings (and most psychologist do) you should also consider IQ a valuable parameter even if that hurts your self esteem.

High level "giftness" can be a curse if you suffer from some psychological disorders or sociological problems as a whole: I'm in the 155-165 range, and when you add my speech impediment along with how often I am misunderstood in almost every conversation (a ridiculous amount of miscommunication happens when you dialog with someone with a different over 2 SD of IQ; 30 points) As an thinker, academic and holistic knowledge hungry person; it's a lot of fun to make intellectual use of high IQ. As a human: It's a miserable life. Lonely in its essence; my conversations with my wife or friends never follow through; my jokes aren't funny because people take a long time to understand/ or worse, too often my jokes are mistaken by an absurd commentary. Also it's overlooked how an gigantic number of people are envious and hostile to high IQ individuals. I have a wife, family, friends, but in essence I feel extremely lonely-- for my thoughts are in constant motion forming ideas and concepts ad infinitum filling notepads. Lucky are those with 115-125 IQ, intelligent enough to have a successful career and life without all the eccentricities that usually come with 135+ IQ.

Depends how you define achievement I think - if you consider chopping wood as an achievement I'd guess hed be an under achiever. But if you think writing and publishing numerous books and scientific papers teaching hundreds of university students as your day job and ad in all his TV work - I'd say hes already achieved more in some years than I could in a life time. achievement means different things to different people I guess. And that's probably a good thing.

@@joeseibert1425 - as you said "IQ is the measure of someone’s mental adaptability and problem solving. " but only as far what as the standardized test can measure and it is not an over all measure of human intelligence because the score does not provide the complete picture, for instance many famous physicists did not score well in their tests - the mere fact IQ tests is a quotient of the median raw score of the norm sample and taken as IQ 100 and scores each individual are based on standard deviation up or down can vary from group to group - ie you can score different IQ values depending where and how the test was run and what kind of standardized test is used - so that presents as an experimental error and in itself is unreliable within tolerances

@@bobbuilder5823 But the thing is, it DOES measure cognitive ability. That is why, when you make all founders of successful companies take an IQ test, you'll get a very high average. Probably 130+. The same way you'd get probably an average of ~90 if you were to have each person on welfare take a test. It does not mean just because you take welfare you have an IQ of 90, but there would be MORE people with an IQ of 90 amongst welfare recipients than another comparative group.

That isn't true. Yes, many people have talents. There is always something you can learn from someone else. (Today I learned how to better set my mole traps from a guy who is not a particularly bright bulb in other ways.) Leaving the God thing aside, not all humans are 'smart' in some way. I know that kind of thought is comforting, but I have dealt with people of low average to low IQ in a professional capacity and it just isn't so. Once you get below a certain level they are simply profoundly 'deaf' in an IQ sense and no amount of volume tune will make any difference at all. They are dull right through. Doesn't mean they are not sweet, loving and lovable people (some are and some are not), but that is a whole other thing.
