Truth! I'd rather listen to the original versions with my bad ear! This to me was just a horrible rendition. Sound, tempo, voice's......nice try tho. I'm sure they sold some tickets

Jason Derlatka is an outstanding vocalist, just nails these songs, excellent range. If they pass the mic around some between Deen and Jason, it gives Arnel's voice a break. He really has a hard time singing a whole headlining set consecutive nights and that was apparent earlier this year, just shredding his voice at times. His lead singer, front man chops are second to none and he will be hard to replace when the time comes. Journey is smart giving him a break for 3 or 4 songs a set. Personally, I like both Deen and Jason's performances, keeps it fresh IMHO.

@@tieukhavu8832 Narada Michael Waldron came on board in 2020 replacing Steve Smith and I assume did a lot of work on the upcoming album. He started touring with them early 2021 until the recent break. Meanwhile, Deen Castronovo, long time member that left a few years back because of personal issues, re-joined for the 2021 tour hence 2 drummers. Well, Waldron was conspicuously missing when they opened the Vegas Residency, only Castronovo on drums. Not sure what happened to Waldron at this point. Maybe, a taste of the touring life reminded him just how tedious it is. Anyway, Castronovo is a beast behind the kit and can sing his ass off, so I'm good.

At this point, I won't be surprised to see Journey play their concerts with 3 (THREE) lead vocalists. Arnel has reached a point where he won't be able to sing 1,5 hours in Journey concerts, so man he needs help. Well the blessing in disguise is the concert could be expanded into more songs. But the side point, you just get to more realize how incredible Steve Perry is. He sang those demanding songs from 1978 into 1987 busy tours single-handedly

He cannot play all vocals for the Journey 2022 tour. He need help to get breaks in between. Arnel is the longest lead singer 14 years and no one can deny that he revives the Journey as a band.

This and "Girl Can't Help It" are my two favorite Journey songs, and up 'til now they've rarely done them, but now they are in this Las Vegas residency. If they do these at the May 5th show in Indianapolis, I'm going to bawl my eyes out.

@@ATalkingBadger You’re not wrong. I would add that jumping WHILE singing will wind you and throw off your support and I think that is what we are seeing. Aside from this being one of the hardest catalogue of songs to sing, doing jumping splits is probably not in your best interest if you want to not run out of air. Singing is the gig, not jumping around. I really like Arnel a lot and think when he first joined he sounded amazing. He has been struggling, understandably, the last few years. I like showmanship but, for me, he’s a little overboard with the jumping around. I’d rather hear him sing well.

@@chrislestermusic Jumping around or not, Arnel has been having trouble over the last few years hitting high notes live. Anytime I've seen people's video posts from concerts and noticed Arnel missing those notes, I couldn't help but cringe. Since they had several shows, I'm not sure which one I watched, but someone posted the entire concert from their particular night of the Vegas residency and I cringed on at least seven songs. Arnel is over 50 and singing nearly all of the songs night after night for the better part of 15 years, or close to it, has definitely taken its toll on his voice. I know Deen has done work with other groups since he got fired from Journey in 2016, but, as far as I know, it's been studio work. He was included in the short-lived group Journey Through Time, which was awesome, but I don't think they did very many shows. I could be wrong on that. As for Arnel jumping around a lot, it's a wonder he hasn't broken anything. If he has, I don't remember hearing about it. If he hasn't, I think it's only a matter of time before he does if he keeps it up.

They're great singers, no doubt. However, they try to emulate SP on every vocal riff. If Journey really wants to move on, try to diverge from that. Takes two guys or more to do Steve's vocals... Think about that .

I agree. I have often thought that the bands singers are basically Steve Perry imitators. Should get someone with their own sound. Van Halen with Sammy Hagar is a good example.

Messaged schon last summer 2020, within many of his provided home studio solos, towards his strat collection, as well as his live video solos strat choice. He messaged me back approx 20-minutes later, his response message was ' love em ' Schon 2nd to none within pauses, stellar versitile guitarist metal/blues. Live video with chuck berry, also schon trading licks with a music only no lyrics band. Both were stellar, berry was surprised within schons licks. Schon being just this good within his teenage years, very if not extremely rare to view a teenager play, just as well as he does at present time. Strat isn't a strat until schon picks it up, this tract is one within his lightest excursions, he has multiple stellar lightning quick lead take offs, with full closures each every lead.

Vocal is all over the place. Honestly, the whole band seems off and unenergized. As a vocalist, I empathize. Anything can throw vocal chords off; dairy, alcohol, bad night sleep ect and you can't "tune" it. Kudos for showing up and showing out.

The first time I caught Journey was.....1978; and Gregg Rolie/keyboards was the featured lead vocalist! Before the ballads, they were hard rockers in the early days. NEVER thought they would still be around 40+ years later. How? The ballads.

Move on, it's been over 30 years since he left. By the way, his name is Arnel Pineda and he kept Journey alive which enables Perry to get Royalty in his senior years, since his 2 releases weren't commercially successful. If he's truly that great, what non-Journey award or platinum did he fet from his solo-career. Sadly, his royalty will taper down as new songs have recently been released.

I think that's the deal now, bands that have been around since the late 70's can't be expected to keep up the same level of quality with any sort of 'original' lineup. Hell, Foreigner (who are still a pretty big concert draw) only has ONE original member, and not even all the time. I can imagine a lot of things but if Journey ever tours without Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain I figure they ought to hang it up.

@@54lex: Considering his limitations and health, I thought what Phil did was extraordinarily brave. But illness and a revolving door of musicians coming and going literally per gig are two different things. And Genesis are who they are. The three of them have become the core and won't do anything without the other. It's a loyalty issue and a practical issue. Phil is the draw. That was proven. So, I don't think your comparison or cheap shot at Phil holds any water.

Jim, Arnel has been having voice issues for quite a while now. He's over 50, maybe close to 60 by now, I'm not sure, but age and singing night after night has wrecked his voice a bit. Not completely, since I have seen some recent footage and he sounded OK overall, but the high notes then and in this concert stink.

i have said that i probably was never going to go see JOURNEY, 1. because tickets are expensive and STEVE PERRY isn't there. but, honestly, to see these guys play live would be incredible. to witness a NEAL SCHON solo in person, i would probably cry like a baby.

The drummer (Dean) is actually the vest vocalist for this iteration of Journey. Arnel- his voice is tenuous at best, and he clearly can’t muster the needed high alto on a regular basis. Any haters-just listen. Arnel just can’t come close to Steve Perry, nor can anyone else.

Steve couldn't hit them any more either. Maybe you don't realize, Arnel's with the band going on 15+ years, which is a long time to be doing that to your voice. It's like a performance athletes. You only have so much in the tank, Tom Brady notwithstanding! We all know Steve set the bar really high and there will never be anyone else like him. But it's time to grow up and move on. Journey wants to work and Arnel helped them maintain a standard of quality like few others could because he was able to hit those notes in the original keys of the songs and sing them expressively and well. That guy's a hero in my book, and humble enough to admit that he couldn't ever replace Steve Perry. Everytime he sings those timeless songs it is done as a tribute to Steve. It says less about how great Steve, Deen, or Arnel are (and they all are) than it does about how much some of the so-called 'Fans' need to let it the Hell go.

Arnel has kept Journey alive & vital for longer than SP now. AND now at nearly twice SP's age at the beginning. Nobody can match SP at his peak, including SP, who publicly gave his support to Arnel at the RRHOF. Arnel deserves a lot of praise & respect. Nobody can fill the shoes of 35yo SP, except 35yo SP. Or for Arnel, for 15 years, into their 50's, or forever. Glad to see Schon & Cain got him some relief instead of ditching him. Rock On AP 🤘

@@in2livinit I like Arnel but he is not the reason he has kept Journey alive, Neal Schon has kept it alive, it’s his band. Arnel deserves his credit but the band would have rolled on if Steve Augerri had never left after replacing Perry.

@@MrDuds1984 if, if, if ... Schon can't sing the songs. Arnel injected new life & energy into the band & grew their fan base. Neal & Cain were smart to make him the new lead in the new Journey. He's a class act. Almost 15 years touring that catalog of vocals, starting at his age, with his physical size & lung capacity, after singing for a living his whole life, a big part of it up to 6 days a week & 2x shows a night for hours, is a helluva resume. No disrespect to SP. Or Augieri.

Not really diggin it, Deen Castronovo is better IMO. To me this is getting stupid, lets just get a different singer for each song... a cabaret of Steve Perry clones. But whatever.
