Augeri in his Journey prime could have passed any mark of the band.. He got so much sh*t in the end about his voice not lasting, laughable considering 90% of the backings are clearly taped.. Steve Augeri a completely underrated vocalist
Augeri was on the 3 Journey shows I saw him. VERY underrated and underappreciated singer during his run with Journey. Arrival was a VERY underrated album to ☹
@@noritacantal2801 Augeri was in the beginning with Journey. I saw him live in they're first tour together he was amazing. Over the years of WEAR and TEAR took to his voice and it wore him down with Journey, he lost his voice and had to quit, they basically cut him. Now, sadly he sounds TERRIBLE vs how he used to sound. I mean he's ok, just cant hit the high notes like he used to. I saw him live 4-5 years ago on a tour with ex lead singers like Lou Graham from Foreigner. Both are sadly washed up 😢 Lou Graham sounds a little better than Augeri now 🤔
Wow! Steve Augeri sounded amazing! I believe my opinion he was the closest voice to Steve Perry! It's too bad they killed his voice with constant non stop long tours!
The ridiculous touring schedule was one of the biggest issues for Perry too. Especially after Rollie left and he got zero breaks during the shows. Two singers helped a lot. Augeri was great but they really needed a couple of guys to handle that load. Deen is a monster vocalist too and took some of the load later on, but a lot the damage was already done by then I think. I actually think he is closer to Perry than anyone. The Journey through Time shows are some of my favorites. He was awesome, but there’s no way he could play drums and sing tour after tour with Journey. He knew how much stress that put on anyone’s voice. That might be some of why he didn’t want to come out from behind the drums to be a front man too. He sings more now and gives Arnell a rest which I’m sure is one reason Arnell has lasted so long. Those songs are just hard to sing. They need two singers to pull it off for real.
Agree ! many fans don't even know their history . They think Perry left .. and Arnel came right in the band . They don't even know Steve Augeri , and that he was the first post Perry singer .
Wow, Augeri is on such good form here. I've been reading lots of online forums recently regarding Steve Augeri, and many say that from 2003 backing tracks were used for vocals and Augeri mimed. Having watched this as well as several other live videos from 1998 right through to 2005 I dont think that is the case; there's too much authenticity in the vocals for them to be mimed, and if they were mimed, the backing tracks surely wouldn't have voice breaks and the occasional flat note. Steve Augeri is my favourite Journey singer, maybe not the best range or technical ability, so much passion and such a great tone in his voice, and such a nice guy too. But ultimately his voice was just too fragile and overworked to continue with Journey. I think he is a little inconsistent with his vocal durability, which explains why he is effortlessly brilliant some live shows and struggling on others, but overall I do think there are a lot of rumours flying around which are just bullshit. Steve was a great singer, and did a LOT for Journey, and sadly towards the end just lost his voice...it's a shame he doesn't get the respect he deserves and so many talk rubbish about him out of blind loyality to Steve Perry.
Matt, OMG I loved your comment here. You are spot on. I loved Augeri too and Journey and Steve did NOT get the respect they deserved. I think it's because so many fans didn't climb on board because Steve was a Perry clone and many Perry fans didn't come on board. Arnel was much later, the international flavor, his story, the hype of Dont Stop Believin through the Sapranos and Glee and the band took off again, to a whole new level. Arnels voice lasted longer than Augeris to. Just my opinion. I appreciate your deep thought 😉
@@mattypayne66 Matt, one more quick story about Steve Augeri. When Journey regrouped after Perry they're first tour was about 1999. They played small venues that first year since they knew the fans would not be receptive to Augeri, which was understandable. I decided to get $35 tickets on the side about 15 rows back 3-4 weeks before the show. I knew with those seats available at the price the crowd was going to be minimal at the Fox Theater in STL, only held 4,500 people. When I got there they had a table with tshirts. I stopped by and said to the guys selling them ok where's the new guy on the shirt. I jokingly said, OMG he even looks like Steve Perry as I RELUCTANTLY attended the show because of my loyalty to Perry. They said, hey back off he's a hell of a nice guy. Hes going to surprise you. I was like whatever. Niel started off the show alone on stage with about a 5 minute awesome guitar solo, the 2,500 fans were standing as we obviously all loved and missed the guys. Jonathan hit the keyboards to start up Seperate Ways, Augeri comes out and TRULY won us over on the first song. It was as Dean said in an interview it was Steve Perry with a perm. I could NOT believe how good Augeri sounded, and so cool he was. The show was UNBELIEVABLE, crowd went nuts for multiple encores, NOBODY left the building. EVERYBODY was jacked up, it was such a great show. I loved the Arrival CD after that and saw them 2 more times in much BIGGER venues as the word spread Augeri was pretty damn good. A memory I will NEVER forget and so happy I kept an open mind 😉.
@@bradcrawford1998 great story man, thanks for sharing! Sounds like an awesome night, I wish I could have been there! I’ve heard the same from other people, that Augeri is an all round lovely guy as well as a great musical talent!
By the way...Steve S. and Dean are two of the best rock drummers who have ever walked this planet...period. Neal remains my favorite rock guitarist of all time. Melodic and technical...most rock guitarists were only technical.
wow!...nice post! ... Michael t Wyman, guitarist and a huge fan of Neil S. ....Journey were my 1st concert with Billy Squire at Ventura County Fairgrounds! fun times ! & fab memories from mtw Culver City Ca , USA .......Summer 2018 ...
Sadly, I don't think Steve's voice would have healed. I saw Augeri on a Solo tour with Lou Graham and some other washed up singer about 4 years ago. Steve's voice was NOT good, OMG, he was struggling mightily, unlike here. Just had no high tenor anymore. And I LOVED Augeri. I saw Jouney 3 times with Augeri and the shows like here were all awesome. Steve is just a cool dude and could really sing. I read the only reason Tall Stories, his original band out east could not make it was because he was compared to Steve Perry, no original voice. So happy he got the fame and the $$$ he earned with Journey for the 5 years he was with them. Well deserved Sir Steve. Total class act 😉
You mean Jeff Scott Soto who was literally never been talked about? lol! Talking about ARNEL, it was the best thing that happened to Journey & that was according to the original members.
Been playing lots of jet set music of yours for days now and it's healing me I stop and read the holy bible and repent and per person myself as a new one so I thank you all you ease my mind and troubles getting found and lost into your music
When I first saw Augeri in American Idol, I knew he would make a name for himself. That he did, but his zest took a toll in his vocal chords. I hope he totally heals and continue! SP fans are brutal, lacking in decorum, neurotically bias and unhinged from reality!
Please, please, please learn this one lesson. "I saw". You cannot say "seen" unless it is in conjunction with "has" or "have" (as in "I have seen" or "She has seen"). Be aware that anyone who says "I seen" is viewed by most people as an uneducated buffoon. Details do matter. You can be belligerent or you can learn.
@@rcharding u knw what sir u mind ur business I’m just makin a commit ur a buffoon for makin a thing out of nuthin so in that regards I don’t care what u think
The impression I have is that Augeri didn't have so much control over his voice, that explains why he played 3 good shows and 1 medium one, this year 2003 he was already having difficulties in reaching higher notes, he left a lot of hoarseness and lost support in his voice.. . Does anyone know how many shows a year the band did? as far as I know there were more than 15 shows a month without stopping to rest , that kills any voice ...
I salute him for giving a big contribution to Journey to the extent that he lost his voice. If not for you there will be no Journey and there will no Arnel....
Deen was singing 4-6 songs ea gig at the end...what's the chances your kick ass drummer sounds exactly like Perry? THIS is more freakish than finding another Perry clone in Arnel!
That's ok if Steve doesn't move like Arnrel. His voice is spot on vs SP. I think his voice sounds VERY good, and so do the thousands of fans at this show. I saw Steve Augeri 3 times and he was WONDERFUL at every show. VERY underrated singer.
@@ronchapman3728 they are not close to Arnel, Arnel basically propelled Journey to places they'd never been, Amazing All out concert tours worldwide. While These guys had their gigs mainly in the US.
You can see & feel there is no Bonding factor or Click during this show. Journey's problem will Always be/stay the same.. Their songs will scorch out Every Singer having to sing these songs 5 or 6 days a week..
I saw the show in Long Island, NY for this tour. I was so excited because it was my first live show after being a long-time fan... I was dissapointed with Steve's delivery that night, might have been an off-night for him. Also the very obvious recorded backing vocals were so loud and overpowered Steve. Neil was the star of the show that night IMO. Even in this recording you can here Steve not really hitting the high notes that well
@@benhymo So, not much different than today? 😁 You can hear Deen’s live vocals on quite a few shows. I can post the links? I’m not saying they don’t have any recorded background vocals, but there is a version of Lights from 2004 that is all live. You can tell by the mix.
I hear everybody saying how great this one was and how great this 1 was journey lost it after they decided to dump Steve Perry. There's no one that has quite his voice and his charisma and stage presence I seen journey 5 times with Steve Perry in concert I won't go see them without Steve Perry. And I recently saw Steve Perry in concert he still amazing he still killin it. Journey will never make it to the heights that they did when Steve Perry was in the band he was the driving force of journey. And he wrote most of their songsWith a little help in the end from Jonathan came but most of them were Gregg rolie and Steve Perry what made journey what they were
You did not see Steve Perry in concert recently. You might have caught him on the eels tour but that was nearly 7 years ago. As for his voice, it's definitely been put through the ringer, but I enjoy him so whatever.
No you didn’t Steve perry hasn’t toured officially since the 1994 tour for his second solo Steve perry is for all intents retired and Steve perry was a co-writer on journey not Journey Period despite his great influence on them and his importance which is Undeniable from 1978- to today but Steve perry was important to the band and will never be replaced he will be filled in for because the fans want to see the band and it would be embarrassing according to the bands manager he can’t sing too much time off and voice too damaged from no time off
No one can replace Perry.Someone can get very close, but it will still be a copy. That said,Perry cant sing like its 1984 anymore. His last live performance worth mentioning was maybe 1994 promoting his 2nd solo album.Perry fans must accept that he is retired and has no desire to tour. The current Journey line up is what it is.Take it or leave it.
Much like comparing Augeri to Pineda, Castronovo is a much better drummer than Smith. It always comes down to passion and feel. Not coming across sterile and technical. As a guitar player that's why I don't care for Joe Satriani.
Smith was better in the early journey years. He got technical and sterile by the time trial by fire hit and I briefly caught some of his jazz stuff and the reprised journey thing and I honestly couldn't be bothered with him anymore. He's not the same drummer from the 70s/80s and in this case, it works against him.
Great vocalist! Augeri was the best Journey could happen back in the days. So sad he had the problems with his voice / throat. Would really like to see him with Journey. Don't like Arnels voice and stage acting.
He is good, but there is no magic and charisma that you will see and feel to Arnel..I love the way Arnel moves and dominate the stage, its so amazing....
Sorry I saw Steve and Arnel both what Steve augeri Had was Great he may not be technically as great as Steve and arnel but he has passion and feel and was perfect for the material when he was on
Arnel is nothing but a Steve Perry Karaoke singer. The band was so much better with the 2 Steve's. I have seen all the singers and I'm gonna say that one of the best Journey concerts I attended was with Steve Augeri.
This was the LAST era/singer of Journey I cared about. I never warmed to Arnel. Mainly because he has ZERO stage presence, and looks like a little Journey Muppet bouncing around on stage like he needs his medication refilled. But also. Augeri has his own great voice and sings with passion - not like a Cover song singer like how Arnel comes across.
Lol, This is so girly & laughable comment while Arnel just elevated Journey & toured w/ them worldwide which apparently never done by any previous lead singer. & he is still around having a lot of tours at 50+ years old & honestly, he still sings/sounds way better than this.
Rudy Postrado You sound stupid as fuck. Steve Augeri brought more to the table than Arnel Pinita I mean Pineda.. Arnel is a cover . Augeri was a class act. Comment when you can sing this than I'll consider your opinion.
Arnel is a JOKE !! Listen to Live and Breathe off Arrival. Then tell me Arnel can sing at ALL UGH. This is why Journey is now its own cover band !!! Sooooooo sad
Arnel is a glorified cover singer ! he doesn't have 1 hit with the band . They hired him for one reason .. they needed a Perry cover singer . If not for that he would still be in bars , where he was . People act like he actually had something to do with Journey's success . He did not . Perry , Schon , and Cain made that happen !
