He had the tone but the songs were too big for him. His pitch is suffering here already. He goes flat several times become he doesn’t have the strength. Arnel has been with journey longer than Perry now. Arnel’s tone may not be as fitting but he has much more strength and that amounts to longevity.
@@mitchcarson6309 Actually, no. Strength does not lead to longevity if the technique isn’t there. Using the chest voice primarily and over-singing kills a voice. Arnel is showing he is human now, too.
I saw one of SAs very first shows with Journey in 1998 in KC. I actually had to be talked into going because I thought there was no way it was going to be anything close to the Perry years. Was I ever blown away!
Good to see some of Augeri's early performances were captured. The age of the cell phone unfortunately didn't really arrive until after his voice was burned and so a lot of folks think of that burned out version of Augeri as the only one. I first saw Augeri on the "Trial by Fire" tour in the late 90's and he was incredible. At that point, Journey was still playing small theaters and halls. Augeri and his performances pulled Journey back into the stadiums and venues they play to this day. Unfortunately, I believe it was the volume of those shows that ultimately cost him his voice and his place in the band.
The first tour with Augeri was the "Vacation's Over" Tour. Yes, they were playing very small venues. I met them backstage when they came to Houston and had them sign the tour jacket I bought. Augeri was very nice and commented on my FTLOSM Tour shirt.
Wow Augeri nailed it!! I saw Journey with Steve Augeri in 2005, and saw them in 2006 with Jeff Scott Soto on vocals (Jeff did a great job too). I haven't yet seen them with Arnel live in concert
I am so glad that I got to see this man sang live at Pine Knob such a great singer great stage presence got the tools to back it up he never had the force it very professional

I saw Journey with Steve Augeri twice, early on (no lip syncing) before his voice got burnt out. The man performed great. In fact, much better than Arnel, who I never cared for and proves just how bad in many live recordings. Dean is a gifted musician, no doubt, and IMO closest to Perry. But, give Steve Augeri his due.
All of the versions of Journey without Steve Perry have been terrific. The current line up with three outstanding lead singers is the best so far. Deen and Jason do a great job. They need to sing more to give Arnel more breaks.
Damn, Dean Castonovo hit those high notes of the classic. Wish Schon and Cain Inc. would bring him back now that they have parted ways with Valory & Smith.
Deen is now officially back with Journey. He will perform with Journey in Las Vegas in December 2021 and then go on tour with Journey in 2022. He is my favorite Journey Lead Singer. Steve A is incredible too.
Saw them in July, 2002. I thought Augeri was a fabulous replacement for Perry. Sadly as we know, his voice didn’t hold up. Too bad, I wish he would have been able to stay with Journey as he was the closest in style and sound to Perry that the band has ever had. Steve Smith, one of the finest technical drummers had left the band before Augeri came in. Castronovo however was kick ass rocking that July evening, that beat went through every single body in attendance. It’s also too bad he isn’t with Journey, as he added to the sound style that Smith engineered for the band. While Augeri was a victim of circumstance, Castronovo was a victim of his own uncontrolled dark side. All in all sad, as the 2002 lineup was the closest to the 1977-1987 era since Perry departed.
Steve Augeri was a great singer. I heard that his voice gave out though, and he couldn't do it night after night, so Journey had to move on from him. Anyone know is that is true? Supposedly that's when Neal Schon saw Arnel on you tube doing Journey covers and brought him in the band to replace Steve Augeri.
Indeed that is true. Steve Augeri 's voice could not keep up with the heavy touring schedule the band had, especially in those days. In shows from 2005 and 2006 you can hear Steve's voice getting tired. But Steve was amazing during his years with Journey.
I just realized what the difference is between Steve Perry and all of the Steve Perry Sound-a-Likes Neal and Jonathan have hired through the years: they all sound like Seve Perry, sure, but ONLY WHILE THEY ARE STANDING STILL. That's why, thank God, there is the evidence of the video record of Steve Perry on stage between 1978 and 1987. NOBODY sounds like Steve Perry in motion. He was kinda like P!nk in that regard -- moving all over that stage and never hits bum note the entire time. Hmmm. Okay. So you mean only moving around on the stage? Not doing anything like, say, playing drums while they’re singing? I don’t think any of the singers after Perry are soundalikes. Neal and Jon looked for a tenor. Period.
Neil burns singers out. He did it to two Steves and an Arnel who was never in the class of either Steve or JSS. Like Gene Simmons Neil is for Neil. He got rid of JSS because he has more stage presence than Neil. Journey has been the Neil Show since SP left.
I've been to a few concerts with Steve Augeri and he was great! He certainly is talented and knows how to perform. Too bad his voice went out. Arnel was good at the start but quickly let his voice get shot out. He can't even hit the high notes anymore because of the screaming. DLR lost his voice completely and while he tries to sing he can't. It sucks! Arnel is almost at that point. He has to sing lower tone to keep the song alive. If Journey wants to continue and have hit songs they have to replace Arnel. That's a fact. He definitely does a good job with this song; not quite Steve Perry's vocal resonance but I give credit. Steve Perry is much better looking. That is sexist but part of the draw for a frintman.
Actually, SP broke up Journey in the 80s. The 90's produced one ballad-heavy reunion album. Again, SP cancelled the tour. Thankfully Neal and Jon reformed after waiting well over a decade. Perry hasn't completed a full tour since the 80s.
The_Jewish_Cowboy Good for them and good for Steve. Perry simply didn’t want to be stuck touring city after city. It’s gets old pretty quick. Plus, he really didn’t need the money because he was good with his. Neil and Jon needed to work.
@Justin Gittings ok well no hits from Journey since Steve left so them needing to work without waiting for Steve got them nowhere but down and washed up! Steve Perry made Journey and history shows it! So they would have been better off waiting and they would have been still be the greatest band ever with mega hits with the VOICE if they wouldn’t have been so money hungry and stupid! Steve was brought into that band to save them because they were washed up going no where. Look what he made them. He’s gone and have done nothing close to great without him just like before. So b who is regretting the decision? Exactly why they have been trying to get back with him and he is like fuck you and I don’t blame him. After him making their band famous and saving them from BBC dying this is the thanks he got for asking him to give him a longer time and yes it was long to make decision about a major surgery he has never had to make before. @Justin Gittings yes because Steve asked to start again. Once again a major hit first time just reuniting. People forget. Neil Schon says Journey was a band before Steve and can be after. But they were not before. They were dead before. Bernie had one last effort to save them because they were in the toilet. He needed a lead singer to save them and he found Steve to do that. Steve did more than save them he made them the greatest band in history! What thanks did he get? He asked them to stand and and support him for a little longer than normal yes, he had never had major surgery. But for all he gave that band I believed he thought he had that backing. Neil Schon stabbed him in the back because he is a money hungry and continues ride off Steve’s coat tails. That is why Steve wants nothing to do with him and I dont blame him. But Neil keeps trying to reach out to him and don’t get it twisted because it’s cause he wants him back and regrets that decision. He so fucked up. That is the reason so many people do not listen to Journey today!! THAT IS THE REASON!!
