Great Channel thanks for the hard work! Try- Why cant this night go on forever and something from his solo album- What Was and Missing you! I was fortunate to see Journey live 8 times and Steve Perry solo project twice. No voice could come close to his, lungs of gold! :)
Also, some people might not know...but steve perry was heavily influenced by Sam Cooke...listen to the song Cupid by Cooke....imagine perry singing it...and you can hear some of the influence that it had on perry...perry talked about that song having an impact on him
Raised on Radio is highly underrated!! He is the voice...I absolutely adore Whitney and discovered him about the same time as I did her. He is the completely package. Once in a century 🔥❤
I agree that Raised on Radio is extremely underrated. Yes, it sounds more like a Steve Perry solo album, but Perry’s vocals are absolutely on point. Two other songs that hit me on this same level are “Happy to Give”, and “It Could’ve Been You”. Great album.
He is not just seemingly effortlessly powerful, he doesn't just doesn't have a unique voice, he's actually singing heavenly unlike people that just try to belt. Well, like you said, superb.
Exactly, who's better vocally? Who has better legatto? Who has better control of their vibratto? "Run together through the night". People don't even notice that part and the power required. Very few people can pull that off, let alone how easily he does it. It's not just high notes. At times you can "rest" on the high sustained notes if you are doing them correctly..
That singer, we have the same take on vocalist. He still has not been given the wide acclaim he deserves. He is incredibly talented. All the subtleties in his voice just set him apart! Ty.
Often times, I find myself just sitting with my eyes close listening to The Voice and smile!!! I love him so much!!! It was his voice that captured my ears before I even knew who The Voice was, back in 1978!!!
This is one of my favorites songs from Journey by far, Steve's voice and Neil's guitar is an awesome combo!! If you can make a reaction video of his life performance of "Patiently" in 1978. That's a fantastic performance from "The voice".
Thank you for reacting to this! Nobody else has. It’s a lesser known track. The vocals are amazing, and this was not even during his peak. He never performed this live, unfortunately. I’m glad someone appreciates this as much as I do.
I recently saw a RU-vid comment on another video of someone claiming they were at a show on the Raised On Radio Tour at which Steve did sing this song. But I know the common sentiment is that he never did, so I'm not sure if this person is just remembering incorrectly, or if he actually did sing it once and it has been lost to time... 🤔
@@Mr._Mints Yeah, I mean it’s possible that it was just never recorded. So, who knows? I hate to say it, but I’ve listened to shows from that tour, and he was really struggling with his voice at times by that point. He was burned out and walked away before the tour was finished. I sometimes wonder if “Be Good To Yourself” was a cry for help. I think attempting something this difficult would’ve been tough on that tour. That’s one reason why I tend to believe he didn’t do it live. No disrespect to Perry. He’ll always be the king. Fun fact: Steve did reunite with Johnathan Cain and Neal Schon one last time for a few songs at a festival in San Francisco in 1991, and that’s the last time he sang with Journey live.
When Steve sings, “Tell me secrets, oh that make you cry,” I tear up a little every time. Flawless voice, but it’s his tone that makes him unparalleled-not even Freddie, who is my second favorite singer.
Nobody, and I mean nobody even with today’s talented singers can hold a note like Steve Perry. This man definitely has a gift from god that nobody in this world can match
Imagine knowing what you know now about music, vocalists and techniques. Then being able to step back in time and be front row to a full Journey concert? How much would you soak that voice in? Wouldn't it be amazing!
Men wished they could sing like him...women wished they had him in their lives. But he was just a regular guy with a beautiful voice that made most people feel warm and fuzzy! Give his duet with Kenny Loggins a listen - Don't Fight It - their voices are phenomenal together!
so GLAD YOU REVIEWED THIS SONG, APPRECIATE ALL THAT YOU SAID ABOUT STEVE PERRY. THE POWER AND PERFECTION OF HIS VOICE IS UNMATCHED. DOESNT MATTER RECORDED OR LIVE...ITS IS ALWAYS AMAZING oF COURSE THE JOURNEY MUSICIANS ARE AAMZING TOO!
Thank you thank you thank - I have been begging some of my usual haunting spots to listen to a couple of Journey's songs that havent been done a thousand times. Still They Ride was the one I requested the most - I will go check that out. But this one is IMO a masterpiece of his vocal talent. From the same album: "Happy to Give" is breathtaking from hearing his vocals, and In "The Eyes of a Woman" is also so beautiful. These songs are not reacted to elsewhere (much) nor played on the radio and is a shame - they are gorgeous tracks.
This song/ Steve's voice always brings me to tears. So very emotional. This is why I have been a fan of his since I first heard his voice when I was 11 yrs old in 1981.
I don't think anyone can put a finger on his superlative voice..range and emotion...I've watched these videos where they comment...what he does is incomparable IMHO.. I'm 73 and I was a male soprano choirboy in the royal school of church music..many moons ago ...it saddens me that he was put under so much pressure to perform constantly and concistently....i choke up when I hear him sing.
Thank you for reviewing this song. It is often overlooked. Not only is Steve's singing so perfect but his voice has so much power and emotion when he sings. Rolling Stone magazine rated him #76 out of 100? An assessment I disagree with completely. His live singing is just as flawless as anything recorded in the studio. In my book, he is #1. Journey may have replaced him but in my heart ( and ears), he is irreplaceable.
Pitch perfect, great range, strong singer and soulful. Steve Perry was amazing. I saw him live in1979, he was amazing we were socked, he out sang the recorded version. Just shocking, of coarse by the end we screamed our lungs out. Neal on guitars didn't hurt. Gray band, gifted, amazing singer.
Well to answer your question. Since 1978 when he joined Journey, probably 50 million people would rank him #1. Tens of millions would rank him in top 5. Tens of millions would say top ten. So many big musicians over the years rank him very high. Hes been loved by so many. Alot of so called critics have given Journey a hard time. Rolling Stone magazine is a complete joke, has trashed so many great bands over the years. They list him at #76 of all time. Which is complete insanity. One of their greatest Hits is like #7 top selling all time, still on billboard charts i think. The fans know whats great. It sounds like you do too. Thats all that matters. He grabs you from the beginning and thats it for life. Hes just so damn special, what can any one say.
I read that too. Rolling Stone, by ranking Steve Perry #76, completely ruined whatever legitimacy they thought they had. Sure, measuring the best singer is mostly subjective, but if anyone doesn’t have Steve Perry in their top 3, it’s a garbage ranking. Power, range, emotion, softness, harmony with others while still standing out as the lead....what doesn’t Steve Perry do well and if you’re not emotional hearing this particular song, then you have no soul or recognition of art. Sorry, just telling the truth.
Love your honest reaction to Steve Perry and journey. Amazing thing is they could have finished this song out with Neil's guitar, you hear it, but Steve ad-libs those notes at the end. That's not written down on a sheet of paper. That's what Steve did he would add lid the endings with those high-ranging notes
If you want to listen to an entire album, why not start with Journey’s Infinity album? It’s the first album that Steve recorded with Journey. It’s still my favorite Journey album, even after 42 years, probably because it was on it that I first heard Steve’s voice. Patiently is my favorite song off that album, and also my favorite Journey song. It’s the first song that Steve co-wrote with lead guitarist Neal Schon for Journey. There’s also a live video performance of Patiently from 1978 you might enjoy watching. Thanks for your reviews of Journey. I enjoy your perspective as a vocalist on their music.
He ranked number 76 in the top 100 greatest singers of all time should be way higher than that he’s in my top five if not number one no he is number one
So nice to see a young man appreciate the music of my generation. This is embarrassing to admit, but at the time I didn't thoroughly appreciate Steve Perry's talent for the gift that it was at the time, I just took it for granted that another Steve Perry was probably emerging soon...no, that was a magical time and sometimes you don't realize it until it has passed. At any rate, I'm grateful to have experienced all of it.
Fans around the world await patiently for this reunion. He can't be ranked because he is the rank he set the bar so high for vocal dynamics and interpretation in studio and live., schooled in an era when music theory was the norm in order to place yourself in this field of work at this level.
Probably my favorite Journey album is Escape, 1981, Steve is absolutely at his peak, particularly in “Keep On Running” and “Lay it Down.” This song is one of the two best from the Raised on Radio album, you gotta check out “Happy to Give.” I love your Journey reactions, I’ve been reacting that way to Steve for about 15 years, hasn’t gotten any less impressive.
The other singers may sound like Steve, but, NO ONE can SING 🎤 like Steve!!! Steve sings songs from a emotional place. The songs tell a story. The others, that sing Journey songs are copying the song, but, not the feeling of the song 🎶 That just can’t be copied. Rock on SP XOXOXO
I come from a very musical family and was in the band and choir throughout jr an sr high school. So I consider myself somewhat knowledgeable on this this called music. Steve was also in the choir in his high school days and “classified and ranked” as a soprano tenor which is something I new even existed. This is why he can hit those high notes and sustain them like no other. This is where he feels most comfortable and also where he is so unbelievable.
My favorite song! 💗 You need to react to Still they ride and missing you from his solo album FTLOSM. I seen Journey live for their Escape, Frontiers and Raised on Radio tour and Steve Perry for his FTLOSM tour! AMAZING!!!
Steve's tone has a Sam Cooke quality to it but with a larger range. He's truly one of, if not the most phenomenal Singers in music history! Another great Journey song you should check out is "Mother/Father".
Yeah!!!! Steve is "the voice" forever!!!! Your reaction to listening to Steve Perry is the best. React to more songs by Journey or Steve singing solo, you will be delighted.
For me it’s Steve and Freddie. Freddie had the operatic, showman style, and Steve had that bluesy, R&B style, like a rock Sam Cooke. They are 1A and B to me in no particular order. But when it comes to my personal taste, Perry is my favorite ever.
Many years ago there was a singer named Sinatra who was called the voice. That puts Steve in pretty good company and he deserves the title. He is truely the voice.
I really enjoyed your review! Steve Perry has always been my favorite singer. You are right. I always equated him to the late Whitney Houston. She had an amazing stand alone voice. Ann Wilson from Heart is also another female singer I would compare him to. Otherworldly is how I describe their voices!
I see journey twice live in concert here in New Orleans with Steve Perry as the lead singer and he does sounds like this live and I was never disappoint
