Kirby Allison is guided on a tour of the Joh. Rendenbach Tannery by Hanns Redenbach. This amazing factory has been creating traditional, oak bark tanned, leather for over a century. The traditional method of oak-bark tanning has prevailed through four generations of leathermaking at Rendenbach. Hanns Rendenbach and his family were kind enough to open the doors of their historic facility and show us the process that leather goes through to be considered a JR Leather Outsole.

Wonderful to see that companies like JR Rendenbach are still around and doing great work.

Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I marvel that companies like Rendenbach continue to survive making traditional products. Most people would have no clue what an "Oak Bark" tanned outsole is, or why it performs better than other tanning methods. Most people don't care either, and are happy wearing thermoplastic soled shoes. My hope is that the efforts you expend making videos like this will educate more people, and keep the market for fine leather shoes alive and growing into the future.

Wonderful educational video! I worked in a tannery for 12 years doing mostly every job they need to do. I eventually ended up in the maintenance department with duties as mechanical, electrical, plumbing, welding, carpentry, painting, general repair, and running the stock room for goods for processing leather. The managers ordered the leather I ordered everything else! Fun stuff...

Thanks Kirby. I have got here via Blackwood Boot & Shoe Repairs of Adelaide South Australia by the recommendation of Jon Head of that artisan's business who uses this leather. Personally I am no leather worker but I instead wear a lot of it out. Cheers from Australia.

Amazing.... Good stuff Kirby... I asked two different cobblers in my area in southern Illinois who said that they have been in the biz for years. Each one said they have never heard of JR soles ... The way I looked at it , is that if they haven't heard of JR soles there not good enough to work on my shoes...

Shame JR went out of business in 2021. Reasons given were the constantly dropping quality of available raw materials observed over the last 10 to 15 years and the continuous shift towards comfort over style of the general population concerning footwear. However the JR brand / JR certificate of quality is supposed to survive.

Hi Kirby! I would like to know if Bespoke Shoemakers like Cleverley or Gaziano & Girling outsource their leather outsoles to Joh. Redenbach or do they make their outsoles in-house. If they do make their outsoles in-house are they superior to Joh. Redenbach's outsoles?
@JohnDotBomb
@JohnDotBomb 5 лет назад
Cleverly hammers their soles to compress the fibers, for the same purpose that JR uses the roller press. That would suggest different sources for their soles.
@Hamsterzilla1349
@Hamsterzilla1349 5 лет назад
The *only* other company that I know of that makes traditional oak-tanned leather for soles is Tannerie Bastin in France, which is owned by JM Weston. They use Bavarian and Austrian hides as well. I don't even know if they sell to other companies at all. So JR should be the only large provider on the market. I know some small tanneries in France that make oak-tanned leather, but it's thinner stuff for saddle making.
