(The drink would be in my love's hand) from Transatlantic Sessions series 3 (2007) bouzouki - Donal Lunny dobro - Jerry Douglas whistle - Michael McGoldrick guitar - Russ Barenberg
I hate all the ads but had it not been for you tube I would not have discovered all the beautiful, inspiring Celtic music from Brittany, Ireland and Scotland. How wonderful to belong to the same species as the divine creatures that perform these wonderful songs.
I just "discovered" Julie back in October and I'm addicted to her voice. I listen to her every night and she never fails to calm me down from the stresses of the day. Simply the clearest, sweetest voice I've ever heard in my life.
My wife and I danced our first dance at our wedding to this song, and it still makes me cry. It is the most beautiful song in the world. Seeing Julie for the second time at the Perthshire Amber Festival with Dougie MacLean on the 29th of October! Cant wait!!!!
This is what real music sounds like! I wish we had more singers like this in America. I love Julie's music, and her for that matter. Jenna seems great as well! I will have to check her out.
Jenna Reid is simply lovely, both back when this was recorded and now. And not just her physical beauty either; she is as good a Shetland fiddler as there is (at least to my knowledge). She holds her own with Aly Bain, and when you watch vids of the two of them playing together, you can see his respect for her on his face. Such fluid, emotive playing. I can't seem to get enough of her.
English translation: Whether he or the others were drinking There would still be plenty on the table Chorus (after each verse): The drink would be in my love's hand Here's a health to the chief The drink would be in my love's hand A boat was seen on the waves And the red hand at the helm I saw it passing through the straits With a clump of heather on the sail-yard You who saw her out at sea Bless the fair ship and her crew Bless her high masts and her equipment Her moorings and her sails Though I am here in Coll I long to go to Rhum And from there to Uist Were I to get my wish
this is amazingly beautiful music and makes me cry every time I listen....now I wish I'd stayed awake during Irish lessons when I was in school....maybe if Julie had been teaching it :-)
Good news for all fans is the release of the DVD "Transatlantic Sessions: Series 3" bringing together the best of Nashville, Ireland and Scotland to perform what has been called "the greatest backporch shows ever". All of the six half-hour programmes from the BBC/RTÉ TV series are included, recorded in a beautiful old converted farm steading in the Perthshire Highlands.
this song (exactly this version) made me fall in love with first the Dobro and second Transatlantic Sessions. And this music still keeps inspiring me every day. Thanks for such great music and thanks for sharing it with us.
Three weeks ago I heard this song for the first time - since then, every single time I log on I click on this vid first, before e-mail, spam delete, and blog add. Julie Fowlis is a siren!
I am so glad to see young people singing traditional lyrics and the sounds of the instruments warm my heart. Makes me want to be Irish. Is it possible to have an Irish heart. This is the music that I lean into. THANK YOU
This is one of the most uplifting, cheerful, beautiful things I've ever heard. Julie's voice is so clear, and Jenna's is great too. The musicians are amazing too.
Cada vez tengo más claro que debo ser irlandés! El flamenco no me dice nada y con The Highland Sessions se me saltan las lágrimas...qué gran generación de genios teneis!!
Wow, ever since I first heard this song, I have been listening to it over and over again, I just can't get enough of it. Fortunately, I speak a bit of Irish Gaelic so I am able to catch the drift of what is being said - sigh ... I really love this song!
Yep. Continuing his streak of playing "just the right notes" here. He's somewhere up in the millions by now. As is his streak of "music played with wonderful musical artists". What a joy that had to be, playing with these folks and Julie is a really striking woman. Don't know what it is, but I think she's as beautiful as she is wonderful to listen to.
I think it is sad that these videos don't get more hits. It is some of the best music there is to hear. I hope BBC produces a fourth series of Transatlantic Sessions
History, culture, and language is carried forward in part through traditional music. I'd love to see more of it finding its way into our schools, thoughtfully presented. There is a sad hole in the heart of our language arts and music curricula that needs filling!
lovely song i think i say this as because i do not under stand it but one thing i do now is she is a great great singer she would put you into a trance
Great performance from the girl from North Uist and the lovely girl from Shetland. Would love to see her do "Eilean Uibhist Mo Ruin " My Grandmother was from "Clachan Loch E`Port" on North Uist, I just love the island and of course Julie and her wonderful music. Moran Taing Julie Andrew McNab, Ibhir Nis, Alba
the very first song I ever heard from Julie. An wuth exactly the same instruments. It is a bit differet on Julie's first CD, but still fantastic. I love the Dobo and the sound of the long whistle.
That was the very first song where I came across that guy who plays the weird guitar. I immediatelly fell in love with the sound of it. Took me a while to find out who that guy was and what kind of guitar that is. I love Jerry Douglas' Dobro play!
I have been studying the language for a bit. One thing I found is that coming from a background where all my grandparents spoke the language I had an appreciation for the rhythm of the language because of the way my relatives spoke English. Their English was not standard English, but instead was heavily influenced by Gaelic.
Julie & Jenna are Scottish - from North Uist & Shetland respectively. The language sung is Gàidhlig, Scotts Gaelic. Just thought I'd mention this. Although or course Donal Lunny is Irish
Raymond Dixon Because , as brilliant as he is, he is only one of many brilliant musicians on this programme. Any champion of any musician who appears on this programme could complain equally as you for Donal.
