This video will show you how to clean and charge or oil your K&N air filter for your automobile. k&n air filters last the life of your car. cars breath easier also.
A NOTATION - you can spray it from either side, I saw a test years back that showed it did not matter. Its cotton which absorbs through regardless which way its sprayed. yes directions will say to spray from intake side, that would be side where the dirt and bugs are gathered. if it makes you feel better do it that way, but there really is no difference AS LONG AS YOU DONT DROWN IT with fluid. just coat it and be done. thanks
I use a K&N filter myself, and I gotta say, it’s one of the best preventative maintenance investments I’ve made for my Jeep, noticing a significant difference in fuel economy. I was even told to clean every 50,000 miles, but I personally prefer to clean it once a year regardless of mileage considering all the filth it accumulates over time. I actually got mine drying as I’m writing this
Thanks for the video very helpful. Good thing I'd saved my old filter because I know one day I will need to recharge this K&N filter and I will need time for it to dry up and recoat it.
Very good demonstration of cleaning this K& N air filter .. I’ve just bought one and this video has boosted my morale .. thank you for your taking your time for your accurate EXPLANATION .. WELL DONE 👍 .. GOD BLESS YOU ..
Great video, I've had the K & N in my Tacoma for awhile, however I didn't use enough oil, so I recharged, using more, but not too much and wow, what a HUGE difference. Well done Sir.
Bought a truck was cleaning it noticed I had a K&N air filter never owned one really appreciated your video was very clean-cut direct to the point thank you for your time
Long time user here. You can dry this filter with hair drier on cold setting after cleaning and blow it if you’d like after oiling to remove any excess residue. Put it on a shop towel or rag to get oil soaked. Hope it helps.
You did a very through video of the whole process. I just bought a new K&N filter for my new Tundra 4.6 , for I know the outcome. I did it on my old Tundra, bigger engine and it gives the engine , like a new tonic. It does work and that is a fact. Thank you for showing this video for I was not sure of cleaning the filter after use. Again, thank you for the video.
Not to mention gas milage. A good 02 mixture is really important to maintain good gas milage which a lot of people don't even know about. With these gas prices now every penny counts. I have a fully K&N intake and filter system on my Jeep and its given me a noticable bump in gas mileage. Keeping the filter clean makes a real difference.
Another tip is in addition to using the cleaning solution I also soaked this in a bucket of water and Dawn dishsoap. This did a great job of loosening the dirt before using the hose to rinse.
Good how to video. What's messed up is I've been using and promoting k&n air filter for years I've installed them on several different vehicles I've have an O2 Silverado and a 06 Cadillac DTS. I recently joined a forum for the Cadillac because it's a new to me vehicle and way out of my understanding or comfort zone for knowing how to do everything on it so to speak. A member posted a video that was very informative about how not to use k&n filters that they don't give you the best air flow. It was done by an independent source that wasn't paid by anybody. I had already invested in the air filter and something I didn't know was that k&n came out with a cabin air filter and I replaced my car's cabin air filter with it. It really hasn't changed my gas mileage per se and it definitely did not go down and like it was mentioned having a reusable air filter minus the upfront expense really saves you money in the long run.
Great vid man. Did this today to my jeep. You are absolutely right about changing the filter out sooner. After about a good 15 - 20,000 miles mine was super dirty. I'm on and off road.
Yeah, love the K&N filters. I use on my 2018 Challenger Scat Pack. I bought an extra one and when I get an oil change I swop out with a clean one. Clean and Recharge the dirty one, wrap in plastic wrap and sit it on the shelf, ready to go for next time.
As always, thanks for taking the time to share this. Im am sure it will help people out. Like me in the future ( one day ) Have a great day brother! thumbs up
@@Butch1982 I just went to a junk yard yesterday and pulled 2 lightly used K&N filters out of the wrecked cars there for $3 each. I have 3 now, including the one that came in my car when I bought it. Tell me how that makes no economical sense.
Yeah.....last time I sprayed oil on both sides. The oil on the top side ended up messing with my intake and I ended up paying a shop to clean my intake and throttle body. This time before I sprayed the oil while the filter was drying, I took a rag and cleaned all the black gunk from the bottom of the air box. I'm now only spraying the underside of the filter and went lighter this time.
This seems like a LOT of trouble to have the privilege of buying a K&N air filter. The filter is expensive, the cleaning solution and oil is an added expense, you still need a paper filter to be able to use your vehicle and the entire process from removing the dirty filter to cleaning it and reinstalling it can span a couple of days. The entire garden hose thing wouldn’t work where I live in the north where it snows and freezes. I’d rather just buy a cheaper one and toss it when it gets dirty rather than go through all this mess. Sorry I’m not a buyer. The video was excellent though and well thought out. Thanks.
You missed the point on the Filter sir it saves you money overall, how much depends kinda how much you drive I know they should be good for 200,000 miles but i still would replace anything at 100,000 you get a cheap kit for like 20 more dollars all together you spent 70 maybe 80 maybe less depending where you live. And as a man you should have simple tools like something to at the minimum get a car battery or to get a alternator off because don’t tell me you spend extra money on a tow for something that simple you already said you didn’t like the added expenses. It does save money it does take time but I mean what doesn’t if you really feel that way then be proactive and get a paper one before you take out the KN and I personally don’t change mine for 7,000 miles and it’s usually never dirty or caused my car any problems. I’m not mechanic but I do know how to do the simple things for free rather than keep spending money
Why do you need to recharge? a very new concept to me as i've been using the disposable filters and just started looking into using one of these k&N filters... Great Video!
Great video with details and all essential tips. Keeping the paper filter is the way I go and let the oil set for a few days. Getting extra less used kn filters from junk yard is also a good idea (a comment here). Thanks for sharing this.
While the paper filter is on, I just leave the KN out for 1-2 days. Just to make sure if there is some excess oil on one part by mistake I can get that of the filter. I am not in a rush to put the KN in. Of course you can put it back after 10-20 minutes like a lot of people do.
@@ercumentdirice8328 Do you notice any difference in performance after switching back from paper to K&N?! Heard the difference is not really noticeable, and that would be my only reason of trying it out!
I recently bought a used 08 Santa Fe GLS, and I was replacing the engine filter with a new economy one when I decided to look up the part number for the old one. Sure enough, it's a K&N AF5833. I almost threw it out! It's very very dirty. I'm not sure if it can still be reused, but I'm going to try cleaning and recharging it. If it works, I'll have the economy one to use while the K&N is drying. Thanks so much for the tips!
I have one of these KN Filters on my Dodge.....I also bought a Cheap filter to throw into my Truck while my KN is Drying..... Sometimes I'm not going anywhere and have time to let the KN Dry......If I have to go Somewhere I just throw the Cheap filter in And Change the Filters Later...
Cheers mate..good demo..did mine today following your steps and all good..not that hard...whats better is if you have a cold air intake in ss chev over there...you can go to town on cleaning the radiator and condensor coil...once you have rhythm and got the gear.....it will get routine..oh also those little stubborn bug bits that get caught...i put on top of clothes line and sun lights it up and gently picked them out with a angled oring pick...easy.
The one caveat... while the filter will last forever K&N's special cleaner does not. 🤨. It's changes the cost dynamic when considering throwaways. (For the record, I use K&N's in our three cars. I think they are simply better)
Hi always spray the oil on the intake side as you don't want to get any oil on your sensors to or you could get check engines lights or engine codes Remember do not over oil the filter hope this was helpful
I'm getting typical chevy p0300 random misfire on the highway after my 5.3 swap. One thing I noticed was my new k&n looks dry white like your example. Doubt there's adequate oil on there which could let bugs and dirt shoot all up inside the motor at highway speed. I'm going to oil the outside of my cone to prevent it getting to the Maf. Theres also the question of cone filter vs k&n drop in - since most vehicles have a stock cold air system with how the ducting directs air to the filter
I buy my K&M filters out of the junkyard… I have 5 Explorer S/Ts so my hobby is getting parts before I need them…in fla you can walk around the junkyards and pull your own parts….so while looking for like new alternators for $30 each…I open the air filter filter box and once in a while …bingo…..brakes..ball joints seats get it before I need it….I also spray wd40 cleaner on the filter..and dove dish soap…then transmission fluid….I also hand water spray hard..don’t know why everybody says just light rinse…and after. Cleaning clean side out. I do dirty side out to get debris stuck and then clean side out again..I don’t think it really matters
I use a pressure washer to cleam my kn filter.. I just dont hit the trigger i let it get a hard mist and that rinses it out the best... Ive been doin it for years on same filter no issues
Road trips to visit my brother in the dusty HOT desert Southwest, a K&N filter is the way to go as it also improves the cooling to the engine due to the higher flow of air into the headers. BTW I make sure to remove that plastic cover over the engine bay as well.
The amount you have to spray they last for like what two cleanings? Plus, you might want to do a final rinse with distilled water. Salts and minerals in the water will eventually clog the pores.
I know this video is old, so idk if anyone will see this, but you dont need their cleaner its basicly just a mild degreaser. Just mix some dawn dish soap with water, and it's basically the same thing. No the dishsoap wont damage anything at all its a very gentle degreaser
Does it take a few hours for the both drying process? From opening the hood, removing the old, replacing with a new paper, to closing the the hood takes about 10 minutes. Is it worth the extra time? Should I have a temporary paper one to run errands while the filter thoroughly dries before recharging?
Thx for that. I'm glad to see how it's properly done. I sprayed both sides n didn't realize to only clean one side instead of washing off both. I know now.
it's like a pair of cotton Jean's, shirt, etc. both sides are fine, ik instructions will say dirty side, but both sides with be coated either way. the key is to coat it, not saturate it in oil reapply.
vegasdavetv hey Man great video! I'm 100% ready to clean my filter. And I have the extra paper filter for the drying process. Are you from Las Vegas? Just moved here myself.
When I clean and dry mine, I always have some red left over in various places from the old oil. Is this normal? I can never get all the red out from the old oil.
Need some advice if you have the time to respond sir. I have the same K@N air filter in a 2012 Hyundai Genesis 4.6l. However i bought the car as flood damage and i got to replace the motor due to been Hydro lock. Would you recommend having the filter been replaced or just get the cleaner kit and clean it .
Im certain dish soap + water bath would suffice for cleaning then applying some air filter oil after it dries. About to do a first time clean myself.. been researching extensively. That spray bottle cleaner is most certainly a marketing gimmick
Dear sir , do K&N air filter damage the engine ? If you left it out to the sun without anything cover it dust will get on the clean side is that gonna be a problem ?
I noticed when I pulled my filter out that the side you sprayed with oil is the outside, the other side sits facing in and pulls air bland is where the dirt collects. does it matter which side you spray ?
I’m so confused, multiple videos on RU-vid is showing people oiling either the clean side or dirty side and I do not understand which side to do now. I just ended up oiling the dirty side!
i read some places that while you should re-oil / charge from the 'dirty' side, the oil will soak through and color both sides evenly red. i just re oiled mine after cleaning per the instructions in the k & n kit and only the side i sprayed (intake side / dirty side) is red, while the 'clean side' is whitish which it turned after cleaning. i think both sides were red out of the box / before cleaning (minus the dirt obstructing the red on the dirty side before cleaning) can anyone confirm / deny whether i should coat the dirty side in oil a 2nd time until the clean side is colored red via absorption?
@Ben Jacobs yea i noticed the same thing...Air filter was pink/red both sides out of the box but now that i washed it and srayed the oil from the intake side ,the engine side isn't so much red. I think it depends on whether you cleaned the filter very good to become white before you re-oil it
@@vegasdavetv my moto use air filter as contrariwise (air filter is cylinder, air from out site go into cylinder...) any issue if I use K&N filter? Two side of KnN air filter as same?
Is it correct that I should spray the oil evenly on the smaller side (the dirty side). How can I tell if I overspray the filter and how to avoid it? Thank you
