If you lose the internal sump Bolt the oil doesn't flow through the oil cooler, but it still flows around the engine. So you lose the oil Cooling

I thought it was to provide an oil bath to the transmission.

Did you ever get that filter off without shredding it?

With the link removed from the shifter, the filter wrench fits nicely and the filter spins off easily. If the filter was automotive size I wouldn't need the wrench.

the last symbol on the oil filter is check for leaks

20 Nm? 11 Nm? How 'bout: Tighten until contacting sealing surface then turn 1/2 turn further.
