Martin Balsam could also play Vince Lombardi. He did play J Edgar Hoover, the legendary FBI director.

This was my first connection to Lombardi…and this movie at 10 blew me away with…..permanent nostalgia I guess. What a find to see this with ads!

R.I.P.: Ernest Borgnine 😥 How appropriate that someone like Ernest Borgnine would play the part of an NFL Head Coach as legendary as he was as An Actor. Call him anything you want, but to me he will always be Quinton McHale.

In my humble opinion, the Packers were the greatest dynasty, because of one thing, and that was great love for one another.

I used to love those cheesy 70's made for T.V. movies on football. The Brian Piccilo/Gayle Sayers pic was one of the best with Billy Dee Williams and James Caan. This is a great one, too esp. with the great Ernest Borgnine.

Thanks so much for finding and posting! Much better quality than what I had posted years ago. Have always so loved this since first seeing live in '73, and felt it was so well done. Borgnine the best Lombardi I've ever seen. Thank again, Obsolete Video, for this!

Dan Lauria did a great version in the Broadway play Lombardi and in some NFL commercials for the 2010 playoffs and Super Bowl (which the Packers won). His Lombardi was used to film a hologram used in presentations at the NFL Hall of Fame.

That would be me... Of course I was only 10 years old. And until you mentioned that, I had forgotten all about it. Break up that fantastic ABC Friday Night line up by preempting one of it's essential components?!.. Only a movie about Lombardi would be worthy.

At the time this movie came out I had wanted to see it but missed it. I don't know why I missed it. Back then, if you miss a show, chances would be slim to get anther chance to see it. And now, after almost 50 years later, I finally got to see it! Great movie, however, I though that there would have been more to it. Like from when he accepted the position at Green Bay until his death in 1970. It would have been great to see that.

That ain't the only problem. Gale Sayers became a Chicago Bear in 1965. (Re the opening shot -- they wanted to steal from the opening of "Love Story." Winter....snow....that sort of vibe.)

Lambeau Field was originally City Stadium. It wasn't renamed Lambeau Field until 1965. Lombardi traded for Lamar McHan when he took over the Packers; he wasn't impressed with Bart Starr at first.

This was quite a good movie and I think Ernest Borgnine was an excellent cast for Lombardi. But what I never understood was why it was only 60 minuses long? Made-for-TV movies were usually 90 minutes at least.

My father is one of the players in this movie. He has always had the nicest things to say about Ernest Borgnine. I even found two publicity photos of Ernest Borgnine from the movie with my father just next to him. I’ve looked for it for years to gift a copy of the movie to my father and I’ve never found it until now. Any way I can purchase a copy from you on dvd?
