Kamaru Usman is the most overrated fighter in UFC history

With recent news of UFC's Kamaru Usman possibly fighting Khamzat Chimaev we go over the claim that Usman was the best welterweight of all time and that he would beat George st Pierre. We look at both their skillsets and records to determine whether Kamaru Usman really lives up to the GSP name. Does beating Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal really mean that much?

Solid take, his run was nowhere near impressive enough to consider him the welterweight goat and his skillset is a lot more limited than many people want to admit.

Even if Usman is better than Matt i Don't think he can surpass the greatness of Hughes. Not only 8 title wins , he brought the welterweight division into life. When fedor,Silva and GSP were in infant in their career people used to consider Hughes the GOAT of MMA, go watch that. And greatness isn't defined by skillset only. It's lot more than that. What is their contribution to the sport. Show me some real contribution of Usman in the sport of MMA. I'm not even bringing GSP's contribution to MMA....Hughes's contribution to MMA is far greater than Usman. Just because Hughes was a dominant wrestler GSP had to learn wrestling so well. That led to flood of good wrestlers in welterweight division. Just see the champs in welterweight division z other than lawler all of the champs in last 20 yrs are great wrestlers. What Khabib brought to lightweight division with his wrestling Hughes did it way before in time. Please think about it a bit. I'm not arguing mindlessly i think. I hope you'll get my point.

Colby is unproven against good fighters in their prime, Burns has great BJJ but that's about it. His striking is extremely mediocre and limited. He doesn't even know how to deal with a jab FFS. Masvidal is a journeyman, Woodley was 36 and past his prime, evidenced by him going on a massive losing streak afterwards, Usman didn't do much damage to him so his decline can't be attributed to Usman. RDA was a washed up LW, Demian Maia is one dimensional and was in his 40s when he fought Usman, Strickland was green and was compromised by cutting too much weight to make 170 and Leon was extremely green too. When they fought at their peaks, Leon beat him twice. In context, there's nothing really impressive about Usman's resume and he was never really that good to begin with.

Most of the people that say goat of a division only go by the number of defenses. They dont care about the quality of opponents or anything. Same with Aljo, they wanted to crown him the bantamweight goat but he won the belt by DQ, won 2 bouts by split decisions, and fought a crippled man. HOW is that considered anywhere near a goat of a division?

Also I hate the argument that GSP is diminished because of his less developed opposition. If GSP's opponents wouldn't be up to snuff with later year opponents, why is it Hendricks, Condit (many, many people argue Lawler robbed him) and Shields beat 2014-2016 champion Lawler (post GSP) and Shields beat 2016 champion Woodley while Condit, prior to a freak leg injury, fought evenly with him? And GSP beat the same Bisping who KO'd the 2015 middleweight champion, Rockhold? So how is it that Masvidal, who fought during GSP's time and never even sniffed title contention until a few years after, potentially being robbed out of it during the Maia fight, meaning he didn't see title contention until years after that, is better than GSP's opponents, let alone the man himself?

People are so quick to forget. Lets compare Usman who everyone is currently hating on and volk who everyone is currently saying top 5 GOAT. Both have 6 title wins. Both took the belt off a dominant champion, Usman 50-45'ing Woodley. Then their resumes. Both fighters have fought washed fighters (Masvidal and Korean Zombie) but Usman has fought every type of fighter: elite wrestling - covington/woodley, elite ju-jitsu - burns, elite striking - edwards and yes, edwards is 2-1 against him however the 2nd fight Usman absolutely dominated until the head kick in the very last minute, which went against the script. Volk has never fought an elite wrester, all strikers except Ortega who almost submitted him. I believe he would still beat Khamzat if they were to fight in Abu Dubai and I also think he is the only man at WW and MW that would beat Khamzat. I find it fascinating how quick people forget and if Volk were to lose to Topuria, he would suffer the same fate as Usman in he would go from being considered top 5 of all time to not even top 15 of all time.

I highly disagree with you with the title and thumbnail and tbh it’s not fair to compare gsp to usman yea your definitely right abt recent fight bias cause clearly ur bias is taking over from the facts is gsp became champion at 25 after being the ufc for only 2 years getting 2 chances for the title after losing to Hughes usman got a chance at 31 years of age that’s pretty old and it took him 9 straight fights 5 years to get shot even tho he dominated a majority of competitions only difference gsp was seen more as a entertaining than usman so gsp got title at a good age while usman at the near end of his career but ended up getting 5 titles defense being a active champ for 5 straight years half a decade sure he might not be ww goat but he’s fs a good number 2-3 maybe under Hughes or over but Kamaru is not overrated keep in mind if kamaru just had his hands blocking his head side he’d probably be called the new ww goat and people would’ve been hyped on him more but yk mma Is an unpredictable sport but kamaru is fs not overrated so this take was plainly disrespectful ignorance

Also kamaru his resume is top notch destroyed Woodley smashed and slept masvidal twice b4 Leon Edward shadow realm him he was 1-0 b4 yk 1-2 and dominated Sean Strickland a current title challenger for the mw division beat damian maia, rda finished burns “I’m a problem” Ultimate fighter winner and for a dude who one was considered a one dimensional wrestler his mma game went up in his late 30s imagine he had developed all his skills prior to becoming a champion my point is gsp got to become champion and improve prior to his prime usman had to develop and adapt basically at his prime age plus he was still reigning champ for 5 years 19 fight streak pfp#1. Y’all also must’ve forgot he was so dominant people would argue who kamaru should fight because he was clearing the division but now I think his best years are starting to come to an end unfortunately but 💯 not overrated and his resume as a fighter should respect highly call him boring call him overrated but facts are fact no one can deny his greatness easily top 2-3 greatest ww champion of all time

Pretty sure GSP is the welterweight GOAT of his time, he is 2nd most total strikes landed at 2591, most takedowns landed still to this day at 90, hes 3rd on most takedown accuracy 73.8%, hes second on sig strike defense 73.1%, and he has most top position time 2:22:05. (This is according to UFC website stats) GSP was still improving he finished bisping when people complained that he don’t finishes his fight. He did kinda seemed gassed out at middleweight but he probably still had to get used to going up. People might complain that bisping had one eye but he’s still a warrior, and i think GSP could beat Whittaker at that time. And it’s crazy for you to say Usman was overrated, I know people hate his personality, but you’re sleeping on his feats, he beat burns who has good power and one of the best jiu jitsu, masvidal who is considered one of the best strikers in UFC on short notice then KO’ed him next fight with full camp, Tyrone Woodley was a beast in his prime, everyone even thought he was gonna win back then. Colby Covington twice who has the best volume punching cardio and wrestling. And usman has the most takedown defense at 97.3%. He lost to edwards but in the second fight he was dominating edwards, until edwards exploited his boxing weakness with headkick, and usman seemed too afraid in his 3rd fight. Overall, im pretty sure GSP would beat usman because his jiu jitsu and versatility is better. Usman has way better KO power than GSP, he just doesn’t have submission threats, And we’ll see if usman will be the same with his next fights because he said he always had knee problems and can’t run good.

Dana and Joe calling Snooze the welterweight GOAT was pathetic. He does have a killer resume and some all time great moments but on closer inspection there's asterisks, like two repeat opponents and struggling consistently and having way closer fights than GSP almost ever did outside of about 3. Dominated Woodley, razor thin fight 1 with Colby (was going either way until the 5th and two great knockdowns, Goddard arguably stopped early and ignored all back of the head shots), short notice fight with Masvidal where he was getting out-struck on the feet and had to grind out a UD but a safe one, back and forth with Burns who dropped and hurt him repeatedly but he did persevere, finish him and get a great win. 2nd fight with Masvidal, sleeps him, all time great KO. Another razor thin fight with Colby that I think either robbed Colby of a draw (most likely) or even potentially a Colby win (was round 2 a 10-8 for a close round but 2 knockdowns?), and then he was doing very well against Edwards, no doubt coming to a 49-46 but this was altitude Leon and then he got slept, and then he decisively lost to Edwards in the rematch.

I wouldnt say the most overrated fighter, since there were many many hypetrains that got derailed, but he sure was the most overrated champion of all time. In retroperspective, his division was just a gentlemens club of old out of prime rank squatters and a few prime lightweights in between like Colby, Burns or Masvidal, making a carreer by beating old out of prime dinosaurs. Actual good ww fighters were ducked untill they were out of prime. Daniel Rodrigues or Carlston Harris came to mind. These guys primed out and became old before even getting a chance to fight one of these rank squatters in the gentlemens club. And of top of it, there was Usman, a flash in a bottle, a mediocre sized fish a a very small pond.
