I shave almost exclusively with straight razors but I haven’t tried these. I do have an old W&B that had no scales and a broken tang. I epoxied it into a piece of deer antler. It’s not shave ready yet. It seems that neither of the razors are outstanding. Thanks Matt.

Great video, Matt! A couple corrections, though. First, "kamisori" does not mean "blade" like you state in the video. It translates to "razor", and is written as "Shave-knife". 剃刀. 剃る (so-ru) means "to shave", and 刀 (ka-ta-na or toh-oh) means "sword" or "knife". Second, since it's a Japanese word, it's pronounced more like "kah-mi-so-ri", as opposed to your "ca-mih-sor-ih".

The kamisori will get you a close shave, but it has a bit more of a learning curve than a straight. That asymmetry is hard to get used to

You're braver than I am for trying that mini sword. And I'm even Korean. Never saw may dad use one. In fact, I remember him shaving with Fatboy that a US soldier had given him. I was 3 at the time and remember watching him open the doors at the top to insert a blade. I just received my Fatboy from you and LOVE IT! Brings back memories of watching my dad shave.

It felt as the Dorco Pace 7 pulled your skin like a butter knife would if you used it for shaving. You should have a look at the face you made when you started using the Fat Handle Tech!! It was like a more than welcome relief!! 😂 And man, that Pace 7 is so loud.. I haven't shave with a cartridge razor for the last 5 years so I can't remember if they're all like that but this one was really something!! And once again, an awesome video Matt! Thank you!

I tried shaving my head with one of those six blade razors wants, it clogged constantly, and gave me the worst cut on my head that I had ever received from any razor before.
@buddhamack1491
@buddhamack1491 5 лет назад
I think the straight razor's handle acts as some resistance to the twisting force, a bit like a ships keel. The razor has to rotate the handle which adds more weight to rotate, whereas the Kamisori has nothing and is more easily twisted in your hand. Maybe it's held differently to stop this? I'm also guessing that is why it is leather wrapped and not just a steel handle.

DEs all the way for a clean face! The only cartridge razor that I recommend is the BIC metal, and there is a reason: it has only one blade and the gap between the blade and the safety bar is big enough so it doesn't clog, and it doesn't irritate the skin

Gem, Schick, and Gillette vintage razors are my favorite razors to use.
@RikuIshmaru
@RikuIshmaru 3 года назад
Thick and coarse hair here - I just can’t use a safety razor or cartridge; my hair just grabs it, gets yanked out, or clogs everything in such a way I spend more time trying to clean the razor than actually shave my face. The trick with a kamisori is sweeping motions... and the nice part about not having the scales is that it’s less to have to maneuver around tight spaces like ears and whatnot.

Hi Matt, I've been using cartridge razors for many years. I stumbled onto the Dorco 6 Plus and have enjoyed using it, (usually making 3 passes). I've never experienced such a close shave. After watching several of your videos and Phoenix's, I decided to try a double-edged razor. I got a starter kit from Dorco and it worked ok, but since I have many small bumps on my face, it became a blood-letting event. I changed the angle and that seemed to help, but never could get the same close shave that I got with the 6 Plus, (I very rarely get any cuts going over the bumps). I can't believe that the razor handle could make a major difference, but not sure about the Dorco blade quality. Any suggestions? Thanks for all you do....George Haven
@RazorEmporium
@RazorEmporium 5 лет назад
The dorco prime razor that I'm assuming you got is extremely mild. Get a proper Gillette / Edwin Jagger / Merkur double edge razor and a variety pack of blades and you'll be in a very different world.
@Illuminati089
@Illuminati089 2 года назад
No dont get an Edwin jagged de89 its a common bad advice if you want a good de razor and want a very mild and easy to earn on aliexpress get a weishi twist to open razor if you want a more efficient but not as forgiving get a razorock mission or mentor. When people tell you to get a de 89 or 34c they are giving you flawed advice and making you spend more money than needed for meh razors.
@borbetomagus
@borbetomagus 2 года назад
An adjustable razor (like the Parker Variant), might be a better long-term investment for new wet-shavers, since it can adapt to one's shaving skill or beard growth. If one has particularly thick or coarse beard growth, a single edge safety razor (like the RazoRock Hawk V3, using thicker 'Artist Club' style blades by Feather, Kai and Schick) might be better still.

I own a Tosuke brand modern-day (large @5mm) Japanese kamisori some years now and a set of a 'hard' (4,5+) Jnat + a procession of Asano naguras to upkeep it (plus I use the stones with other razors too.... ). Not a scary thing and by far not the meanest blade in my collection. And no: I do not shave my head with it, never did. Fact: I can shave well with it and can keep it keen & smooth effortlessly. A tad cumbersome, indeed it is... Fact: Those razors have been designed for a barber, the spouse, or a valet (if you were/are? a Shogun type/ruling class pesron, magnate etc. who can afford it) _somebody else in general_ facing you and invariably using the _omote_ side (the one with the pronounced grind) against your skin as to perform the shave on you.... Undisputed fact: These knives have been designed and materialized for the type of sparser, thinner and finer stubble Asian men sport and not for those of the Western man. Matt's is a good example and things aren't getting any better with age, I can tell you this.... As for trying the 6,7 whateva Korean multi blade thing, well, these ventures are always 'at own risk'....

I have tried the HeadShave device that uses Dorco 4 or 6 blades.....everyone says that is the best ever thing for shaving your head. In my case; i found it horrible (4 blades), it pulls and cuts....causing tremendous scalp irritation. I use a DE razor, multiple varieties and they are better, you just have to be more careful. Gillette 3 blade are OK'ish, you can do it quicker.... but as if you use in your face....different technique....press down

They actually originated in China. You are right that they were created by Buddhist monks who wanted to keep a shaved head and they very well may have spread to Korea and later Japan but everything Ive ever read has said that they originated in China.
