You'll have a blast with the Kansas rabbit hole. Fun background story. Dust in the wind was nothing more than a fingering exercise that guitarist Kerry Livgren would play to warm up when sitting around the house. His wife told him that it was pretty and he should write lyrics. After presenting it to the band they arranged and recorded this for the Point of No Return album. Now you know.

This came out as I was a teen and my mother was dying. I would sit for hours listening to music as an escape while taking care of her. The journeys you can go on in your mind is wonderful.

Kansas is prog pop royalty. Everyone will tell you to do “Carry On Wayward Son,” but I recommend “Song For America,” “Closet Chronicles,” “Nobody’s Home,” “Point of Know Return,” “Inside of Me,” and “Backdoor.” I grew up with these guys, Styx, ELO, Yes, Pink Floyd and Moody Blues. I always say that’s why I never needed drugs. Just sit in a dark room by candlelight and let ‘em rip! Keep ‘em comming! If you want an orchestra, try the live version of “Nights In White Satin” by The Moody Blues or “Silence And I” by Alan Parsons Project. Well. I just went back and listened to all of my suggestions. Mmmm!

This song is just simply gorgeous. I bought the record when it came out (yeah, I’m that old), and I have never gotten tired of listening to it. It still gives me chills. Mark, seeing you react to these classics is awesome. This music is timeless, and you feel the same way I did 46 years ago when I set the needle on the record and put on my headphones. Thanks for your honest and natural reactions!

You've got to do their mega hit Carry On Wayward Son to really understand what this band was about. But I'm so happy you got to this and I'm really happy that you played it twice, because it deserves that. I may be a bit biased because I am from Kansas and those boys were maybe six or seven years older than me but this came out when I was in junior high and high school and ride along with all the other bands of the time, like Boston and Lynyrd Skynyrd and Black Sabbath and all of that, they just oh let's not forget rush, and pink floyd, but anyway, they grew up 30 minutes from me, and in fact when I was a freshman in college my roommate was a senior and he was a music Major and he was from Topeka Kansas the capital of this state and where those guys were from. And he had some of their hand-me-down band Equipment Incorporated into his Stellar Stereo system. He could win any stereo War it was so loud and so high fidelity

I have been a Kansas fan since I was in my 20's, I'm over 70 now and still love them. This was a great reaction to on of their best known songs. A lesser known song ( and just as mellow and imho even more beautiful) is "Lonely Wind". I think it is off the same album. I think you might enjoy it. It's one of my favorites from them. Keep being you Mark, everyone else will adjust.

The guitar player used this melody as a warm up exercise. I believe the story goes his wife heard him playing this warm up exercise one day and in passing said, “that’s nice. You should write lyrics to it.” He did, and by the end of 1978 it was in the radio so much that I couldn’t take listening to it anymore. It took many, many years of actively avoiding it before I could enjoy hearing it again.

Kansas was one of the few American bands that could stand right there with the great British progressive rock bands like Pink Floyd, Genesis, ELP, and others, and still they had, imho, a uniquely American feel to their sound. Love that you listened to this! Probably their two other bit hits were "Carry On Wayward Son" and "Point of Know Return," but their longer songs, like "Song for America" and others, are worth checking out too. Love your honest reactions, brother!

DUST IN THE WIND I close my eyes, Only for a moment and the moment's gone. All my dreams, pass before my eyes, a curiousity. Dust in the wind All they are is dust in the wind. Same old song. Just a drop of water in an endless sea. All we do, crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see. Dust in the wind. All they are is dust in the wind. Oh... Dont hang on. Nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky. It slips away, All the money wont another minute buy. Dust in the wind. All we are is dust in the wind. Dust in the wind. All we are is dust in the wind

Think back to prog's 1970s heyday and you'll probably recall that British bands like Yes, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, King Crimson and Genesis pretty much dominated the landscape, leaving little room for American bands. Nevertheless, a few managed to emerge, like the Topeka-based Kansas, whose blend of complex, symphonic arrangements (one of them even played the violin!), muscular hard rock and other musical forms was particularly inventive. 1977’s blockbuster ‘Point of Know Return’ LP solidified their popularity, selling 4 million copies in the U.S. alone. It generated hits with the title track and the iconic ballad “Dust in the Wind,” as well as popular favorites ‘Portrait (He Knew),’ “Sparks of the Tempest” and “Closet Chronicles.” From intimidating prog rockers to accessible hitmakers, Kansas could certainly crank it out with the best of them but even then it was always with an ambitious musicality that reached well beyond the riffs. - Excerpts from Ultimate Classic Rock 2023
