When Elvis joked or cut up while singing he was having fun. But when he sang a serious song with a message like In The Ghetto he did not joke or cut up. It was personal to him. Also this particular show he was not feeling well as he even told his audience during it. But he definitely cared about the message and issues facing people living in poverty as he too grew up dirt poor. Check out If I Can Dream by Elvis. It's a tribute to MLK and is his most powerful and passionate performance of his career.

Elvis understood poverty because he was raised in poverty. He was very generous because of it.

I could tell what you were thinking. You went into this song by Elvis determined not to like it. Perhaps I'm wrong but that's how I felt watching your reaction. It was like you believe the lies that are spread about Elvis and not bothering to research what a incredible talent he was. Also the only big white entertainer to show up for black community fundraisers. Both Jackie Wilson and BB king said he was a great man and Jackie loved Elvis and Elvis was a big fan of Jackie. Just saying look into him and his influences and who he influenced.

Kathy Mattea is married to a songwriter, but country music and truck driving are ingrained in each other. Many country singers have worked as truck drivers, and so many radio stations available to listen to by truckers are country stations. As you have noted yourself, country music is about stories and are so relatable. That is why they are so popular.

Elvis just sang a powerful and relevant song. Your snide and dismissive remarks are uncalled for. I believe it is you who lack any understanding or emotion for a meaningful song. You're reactions are not very entertaining or enjoyable. I'll be listening to other people's reactions who have more depth and maturity.

His facial expression was the way it was so he wouldn't break down on stage....he didn't own a wearable pair of shoes til the age of 9, he didn't have anything but a dirt floor at home til the age of 14, his family was THAT poor....and when he finally "made it" with his music, he bought his mother a brand new Lincoln or Cadillac every year til her death, even though she never learned how to drive, just so his Mom would know what it felt like to own something expensive and brand new cuz she never had any of that before...he donated A LOT of money to the black churches he used to hang out at in Tupelo, Mississippi too...he was that type of human being....and to his credit, he enlisted in our US Army, same as I did, although I don't think he ever deployed overseas (I was deployed twice, served two combat tours in Iraq), I respect him for not using his celebrity to try and get out of taking that Oath of Enlistment.....

Absolutely true, Elvis was a beautiful human being, there are countless stories of his generosity. When he joined the army he was sent to Germany and that's where he met Priscilla. Even while he was so famous Elvis never wanted special treatment by his COs.

@james hurd Hey James, how can an "opinion" be inaccurate? That defies logic... I used to make mix tapes (back then reel to reel) for nightclubs, restaurants and other commercial establishments where music was an integral part of the setting. When discussing preferences to include my most frequent request was "No Elvis please". I'm not going to insult you because you like Elvis, "we like what we like", but he is one of those artists that you either love or hate. Music is for enjoyment, so everyone should listen to whatever makes them happy!!

Elvis grew up in the TN and Mississippi versions of the ghetto and when he found wealth he spread it around to help the people he related to. So, yeah, this song was dead serious to him. He also had a fun, playful side and a hot, romantic side. Frankly, I was a little surprised by your lack of expression through the entire song. Love Elvis, and I enjoyed hearing Kathy Mattea as well. Thanks.

BILLY YOU ARE SO CRAZY. ELVIS WAS ADIVED NOT TO DO THE SONG WHAT DID HE KNOW ABOUT THE GHETTO? HE WAS BORN DIRT POOR IN TUPELO MS. LOST A TWIN BROTHER AT BIRTH. THE SHOTGUN TYPE HOUSE GOT TSKRN AWAY FROM HIS MOM.WHEN. HIS DADDY WROTE A BAD CHECK FOR 12 DOLLARS FOR SOME GROCERIES AND WENT TO JAIL. THEY had to move several times through the years. In TUPELO he hung out with a lot of black kids and was considered from the wrong side of the tracks. When they moved to Memphis in his teens ,HE GRADUATED high school and drove a truck for an electrical company and they. LIVED in the projects. 1954 HE STARTED to try to become an entertainer paid his playing one nighters,hi my Tonka etc any place that would let him play. In 56 the rest is history. I don8 understand what kind of expression you wanted on his face. A smile. HE HAD A serious look on his face. HE WAS VERY GENEROUS WITH HIS MONEY. GAVE TO 40 CHARITIES, cars.houses.money to his FRIENDS and Strangers. To me it sounded like you insulted his performance. HE LIVED THZT SONG MISSISSIPPI ELVIS JUNKIE LB I

I can tell you regarding the serious expression... Elvis would love to cut-up, laugh and have fun with his band or the Sweet Inspirations a lot... however, when it came to doing a serious song, he wanted the point to come across. He got serious, and didn't want any distractions. Once, after he started performing his rendition of "Softly As I Leave You," a waiter in the showroom was clearing dishing and making noise... Elvis paused and said "I hope that clattering stops now please...." then began the song again....

It doesn't help that at the point that the song was performed, Elvis was struggling with a wicked drug problem, as I understand it, specifically in legal pharmaceuticals. He was bad on uppers and downers due to his hectic performance schedule and was blasted half the time. Also keep in mind, June 19, 1977, he was in very poor health and only lived another 2 months or so. The likely reason for his lack of expression is either being blasted on drugs at the time or just being completely bone tired. He was really messed up from the scheduling. Okay, Billy, I keep trying to find Billy Binges here on YT and I might be missing something (likely am seeing as I haven't had my coffee yet), but I can't find your other channel. Could you just give us a link to it? I would love to support you on that channel but I can't if I can't find it, ya know? Love your work, bro! P.S. This was a serious song and he was trying to convey a serious message. I thought you were more open minded than that. I feel like you didn’t really listen and was very disappointed in your reaction.

Billy, you do know that he was an addict. So he took uppers, downers. Look up some of his gospel music and watch that's what he cut his musical teeth on. He loved the black gospel music and would sing for 2-3 hours after a concert and expected the guys in the band to be there till he was exhausted.
