Kenmore Dryer Repair - How to replace the Thermal Fuse 

Great video. Was able get our dryer going with a new thermal fuse. The trickiest part was getting the belt back on because of the tight space reaching in. In the video it looks like somehow the closeup was filmed from inside the back so the image was reversed.

Great video. As an FYI, you can get to and replace the thermal fuse by just removing the bottom panel then the fan shroud. You'll need smaller hands and a 1/4" box end wrench to get to the screws. Once they are loosened you can then use just a 1/4" socket to remove and then replace them. Total time 12 minutes including vacuuming out the bottom of the dryer.

Thanks so much for this video! I learned how to properly disassemble my dryer (and it got a nice vacuuming) even though my issue didn't end up being my thermal fuse, but instead a broken belt! A quick Amazon order and $40 of parts later and I had a multimeter to check the fuse, 2 new fuses (replaced it just in case), and a new belt. You saved us over $100 and helped me gain the satisfaction of a job well done by myself. Thank you for sharing!

It’s Nov 2020 - just wanted to say thanks for this video. When my dryer stopped i figured why not see what YT had to offer. I saw your video, ordered the part and used you as a guide step by step. While some smaller things were different in my model, you were spot on for 90% of it and even when i felt i had gone too far, would enx up calling someond to fix my mess, i just stuck to your instructions. Now i have a working dryer for under $20 bucks and 2 hrs of my life, which isnt a bad deal! Thanks for posting this and giving those of us willing to take a shot a little guidance.

This man helped us fix our dryer. Thermal fuse. It wasn’t as easy as it looked but did solve the problem. Thank you for this video. We went to a parts place and they tested our relay switch. They said it was good. So we went in to fix thermal fuse.

thank you so much for making this video! Our dryer would make a click noise but not turn on. We thought it was the fuse, but after opening up the dryer we saw the belt had broken. Went to Menards and got a new belt for all of $10, and dryer is working again! Probably saved ourselves hundreds of dollars. It may seem like a lot of steps but it's not that hard

I can't thank you enough for this how to video.. I am a 65 year old grandma and I watched your video five times thoroughly. The only thing I did not realize was the ratchet and ratchet set sitting I tried to take the screws out with a plier.. but then soon discovered a completely new ratchet set out on my grandson's desk hidden under a lot of stuff.

In my case, the issue was a broken belt, but I was able to completely take the dryer apart and put it back together because of this video. You were clear and concise and showed all the necessary steps up close so I could see what you were doing. Thank you!

I just replaced the thermal fuse on the same Kenmore dryer, and I was able to remove it via taking only the front lower panel off, and work around the right front lower side. I was able to fit my hands in with a volt meter to confirm, via a continuity check, that it was burned out. Then I used a nice tight 1/4' ratchet with 1/4 inch socket, and the two screws holding in the fuse, came out easily. Take your time. put new fuse in place, pilot screw holes with an old screw. Tape screws onto socket, so you don't drop any. Put on connectors last. The fuse looks like it can go in either way. But I did notice a small notch on one side, which was closest to the front of the dryer. These was also a ton of built up lint all over the bottom as well as going into where the igniter lights up the gas. Looks like it was not too safe. After a good vacuuming, making sure nothing looked like fire hazard, It was fixed and good as new. Just make sure the fuse part number is correct for your unit. In New Jersey this repair cost $175, if your lucky. Sears will do it for $250. This Fuse is under $2 , if you buy it on line, and an aftermarket one is what the repair men use!

I would have lit my dryer on fire from pure rage had it not been for this video. I’ve never taken more than the lint trap out of my dryer so this was extremely helpful for me. The thermal fuse wasn’t the problem..my dryer is just an old piece of junk that needed a lot more than I was willing to invest. But if I need to replace something in my new dryer 1) I will light it on fire but 2) I’ll feel more confident about taking it apart and will seek out your videos Thanks so much!

Thanks for the videos, they really helped and I felt like a professional mr fix it. Only my electric Kenmore 90 series dryer stopped heating up after running for a few minutes. Removed thermostat and restarted it again..perfect but then went off after few minutes. What may be the problem!!

Wow, that's a lot of deconstruction. I got excited when I saw you remove the cover for the power panel hoping that that was where the work would be done. And when you started removing the drum, all hope was lost. Thank you for such a detailed explanation in the video. My dryer is 20 years old. Trying to figure out if I have the ambition to tackle this. I fixed my 20 year old dishwasher several times via videos, so I probably will tackle this.

Hi . Greetings from Peru. My frigidaire dryer DE500ADW5 overheats and the power to the heating element is not turned off . Besides , the wires and terminals to te heating element are getting chared. What coud be the problem?

Note…. on some units like mine, the part is in the back and all it takes is 6 screws.

What’s the fuse next to the thermal fuse? The thermal fuse is the the 2 blue wires correct? Next to it is one with red wires, what is this one?

Nice video however - way too much work just for simple fuse replacement; as mentioned by others you don't need to take the drum out like this; just remove the fuse using 1/4" socket, with the drum still in place. Also of note - this video only addresses one of the two thermal fuses in this model Kenmore dryer - there is another thermal fuse, of a different type, on the side of the heating element. You can see it at 4:54 in the video - it's the second-component-back on the heating element on the right side.

Appreciate the video. Just a comment on the engineering done for the fuse placement. Deconstruction to replace a fuse? Really? Either the engineers were incredibly bad or they were sneakily 'good' (ie, get more product sold vs an easy fuse fix). Either way - very poor design.

The newer Kenmores have the fuse on the back...easy changeout. This older design is moronic. Might as well get a new belt with this design.

I just did all this crap and it wasn't there but it was also my fault because my dryer was a little different so if yours isn't exactly like this don't do it and also my shit was easy just take off the back aluminum shit it will be right by the thing that blows the hot air out it's easy . I took the whole shit apart for nothing . My dryer is Kenmore but not a two piece door it's a one piece hope this save you some time

Are you kidding me???? Every other manufacturer puts it right on the other side of the rear panel... You take off four screws and there it is. Reason enough to never buy a Kenmore again! **** ETA- actually, you just replaced the thermistor which is not the same as a thermal fuse... You might want to make that clear for people that aren't aware of that. The thermal fuse should be located right on the other side of the back panel.

What a load of crap! What if you are not sure it is the thermal fuse? Could be the heating element, right? What the video should have shown first is where to access these wires in the upper panel in order to put an Ohmmeter on them and check the fuse without doing all that disassembly. If I go into the dryer and find out it isn't the fuse, I'm gonna be torqued!!
