Kenmore Dryer will not stop running - Dryer Timer 3387126 or 3388118A Fix 

Thanks a million Bob. Fixed my Whirlpool dryer with a #10 3/8 screw, After trying 3 ebay used ones your fix worked. The hardest part was getting that tiny snap ring off the shaft. I'll let my ebay seller know not to sell these things again. I ate up all his profit in shipping costs. 😁

Thank you very much. Your investigative skills are awesome. I 'm a retired engineer and have a dryer with the same issue; and I have utilized many electromechanical timers in many applications. So, I intuitively believed that a cog switch or an alignment issue was a logical cause for this malfunction. Your solution appears to be the simplest solution. I also believe that having both the timer motor and the drive motor can operate on one switch [Motor], without exceeding the switch rating. Thank you again & I hope everyone finds your solution.

Thank you--working on this now! Question: Should that screw be cutting into the (unthreaded) plastic when you screw it in? If not, what is holding it in place? Also, either way, won't that metal screw eventually carve enough slop into the plastic disks that the problem returns? Update: My screw was snug-ish but not tapping the plastic, so I put a nut on it in the gap between the third and final disk, which locked everything together nicely. And now...success! The dryer turns itself off as it should. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. This was probably the most satisfying repair I've made in YEARS.

Thank you Bob!! I just fixed my oldy but goody 1980's Kenmore 110.87570110 dryer that wouldn't shut off. Timer part 693905A. All the contacts looked great but there was a LOT of slop in the 3 plastic discs as you mentioned. It took longer to get the snap ring off than the whole process of taking it apart, installing the screw and putting it back together. I hope the bottom gear is supposed to spin freely, as mine does. On my Amana the contacts were OK. I could check that without taking apart the timer. My problem was on "auto" regular/delicate cycle, the timer would not advance past heating phase.... IE ... stuck on heat and run forever. Normally you would think that the thermostat was stuck and not switching heat off, but my problem was only happening during this one cycle. Note that the timer only advances in "auto" mode when the "cycling" thermostat is in the heat-off mode. My problem wound up being the plastic cam disks that were not syncing together because of the wear where the plastic disks fit onto the metal shaft .... IE .... too much free spin of the disks on the shaft. I needed about a 4 mm diameter screw to lock my disks together. But, I had to use my Dremel with cutoff wheel to remove the head on the screw and cut a slot into the end of the screw for screwdriver. Also, for my timer the mounting plate comes off without having to remove a shaft retaining clip because it's a 2-part shaft. One part of shaft comes off with mounting plate. This means that you better note that shaft position and place notes on mounting plate and plastic disks for aligning the 2 shafts when putting back together. Otherwise, the selector knob that mounts to the user end of the shaft will not be aligned with markings on dryer's front panel.

Wow thank you for taking the time and explaining in detail what the actual problem is. I been troubleshooting an old Whirlpool dryer with a no heat issue and no timer advancement. All the heating components tests electrically good for continuity and element tests good too. I took off the timer and sanded the contact points but still no go. I did notice a lot of wobble on the cam wheels, so I will try your fix as a last resort. It's good informative videos by conscientious helpful people like you that make RU-vid great.

Had the same problem. Timer would not stop running but dryer would shut off. Took the timer apart and installed the screw as in the video, same problem. Replaced the timer, same problem! I eventually found the problem. Was a coil in the heater shorting to ground causing a stray loop that kept the timer running!

Nice video and informative but unfortunately it didn’t work for me. I spent over 3 hours installing a screw . I tapped the plastic wheels and filed the threads of the screw so it wouldn’t interfere with anything. Didn’t work😢

It didn’t work for me either. The timer doesn’t move. I can rotate it by hand, but it just stays where I left the knob at.

Ya know... you can always set the camera down and point it at the subject, in order to free up your other hand.

find a timer with the same terminal configuration . remove the cam and install your cam ..... now you have a timer that will work .
