Can you consume dairy on keto? Here’s what you need to know about the ketogenic diet and dairy.
Timestamps
0:00 The ketogenic diet and dairy
0:20 Yogurt on keto
2:20 Milk on keto
3:05 Cheese on keto
In this video, we’re going to talk about the ketogenic diet and dairy. I’m not going to talk specifically about lactose intolerance or milk allergies. I mainly want to cover if you should have dairy on a ketogenic diet or not.
Sugar in 8oz. (1 cup) of various kinds of yogurt:
• Fat-free fruit - 47g
• Fat-free plain - 19g
• Fat-free Greek - 9g
• Whole milk plain - 11g
• Fat-free vanilla - 34g
• Goat milk kefir - 7g
• Blueberry kefir - 20g
• Low-fat plain kefir - 12g
• Low-fat plain kefir (lactose-free) - 11g
*Yogurt is not a good idea to consume on keto.
Sugar in 8oz. (1 cup) of various kinds of milk:
• 2% milk - 12g
• Half and half - .36g
• Whole cream - .1g
*2% milk is not a good idea to consume on keto. Whole cream is the best to consume, but half and half is fine too. Try to get organic and grass-fed if possible.
Sugar in 8oz. (1 cup) of various kinds of cheese:
• Cream cheese - .45g
• Pepper jack - 0g
• Cheddar - 0g
• Mozzarella - 1.4g
• Processed cheese - 19g
• Cottage cheese - 6g
*Processed cheese is not a good idea to consume on keto. You would also want to avoid consuming cottage cheese. However, cream cheese, pepper jack cheese, cheddar, and mozzarella are fine to consume on a ketogenic diet. Try to get organic and grass-fed if possible.

Not only does it not decrease, but the sugar content increases, significantly. Since the lactose (which is a combination of glucose and galactose) is broken down, you're left with its building blocks, which is sugar. Before keto, I used to always buy lactose-free milk since it was easier on the stomach, until I realized that it had quite a bit more sugar than regular whole milk.

I've been on a ketogenic diet since 2013, with great results. However, only when I took dairy out of my diet did some hormonal issues that still persisted were completely resolved. Specifically, my hirsutism, which I had since my teens, was completely gone in 6 months of dairy free. If you're a woman and have issues with your hormones, consider taking dairy out of your ketogenic diet.

This is ideal for keto since it has a high fat content and it is creamy delicious. Also, this is a good source of probiotics with active live cultures. Quitting dairy was the best thing I ever did - constipation is no more, my skin has cleared up so much and I now look ten years younger than I actually am, according to friends and family:) Bloating has gone, my tummy is completely flat (as opposed to the perfect round ball shape it was before!) Camel milk is the best thing I have ever consumed, and sometimes drink goats milk, oat milk, almond or coconut milk. Fortunately there are many alternatives to cows milk:) Dairy was also problematic for me due to allergies, skin issues and asthma-type symptoms. During that 4 month period I have had homemade yogurt every day for breakfast and sometimes before bed .(as a matter of fact I still eat yogurt every day )I have been making yogurt at home for over one year now and because I love keto and I love yogurt I had to come up with a solution to increase the fats in it and also lower the carbs . What I do is for every gallon of whole milk I add 1 quart of heavy whipping cream. I let it ferment (after all the heating and then cooling and adding live culture ) in my oven in a blanket over night 10 hours sometimes 12 hours ( when ready u can strain it or as u go scoop the whey out ,or do what i do once ready and before refrigeration i put few peices of paper towels on top to absorb the whey )

Dr. Berg the reason why some lactose free dairy products still have same amount of sugar is because these products r added with a chemical that breaks down lactose into other forms of sugar(galactose and glucose generally); smthng which lactose intolerant pple can't do, however the sugar remains in the dairy product. "Lactose free" Should not be confused with removing lactose from the food.
@remsma3412
@remsma3412 6 лет назад
Re: "I don't understand how there's 11g of sugar in lactose free yogurt." Lactose free usually doesn't mean the lactose is taken out. It means it has added lactase, which splits the lactose into galactose and glucose. So, the sugar is still there, just in a different form.

5 ounces (150 grams) of plain Greek yogurt provides 6 grams of carbs and 11 grams of protein. That amount of cottage cheese provides 5 grams of carbs and 18 grams of protein (43, 44). For the Lactose-free thing. I was wondering about the sugar content in the lactose free milk recently. Found out, lactose free doesn't mean lactose is removed from the milk but it is broken down into monosacharides galactose and glucose by adding lactase enzyme into the milk. So the lactose-free milk tastes sweeter and is higher in glycemic Index too. So lactose-free products are even worse for the keto diet in general.

That is because of the lactic acid bacteria of the starter ferment most of milk lactose as exactly what happens in hard cheese. If you even keep yoghurt for few days you can get almost 1% lactose as the bacteria keeps fermenting it.

Dr. Berg, you are speaking my language! I always thought it was all the cheese I ate (I always say that cheese is my favourite food group) that was causing the excess weight. Now I know that the crackers or pizza crust I ate it with were the real culprits even if made with whole wheat.

Not so fast Dr. Berg! There are many different kinds of yogurt, and I've found a few I like to use. Chobani whole milk plain Greek yogurt- 9g fat, 16g protein, 7g carbs, 6g sugar. Two Good vanilla lowfat greek yogurt- 2g fat, 13g protein, 4g carbs, 2g sugar. Friendly Farms protein fat free Greek yogurt- 0g fat, 13g protein, 5g sugar. Note that he is basing off one cup, the serving size here is 3/4. I always load mine up with nuts, seeds, and berries, whatever I got. I used to eat regular yogurt, but ive gotten used to the sour and thicker stuff!

I read the ingredients on a gallon of milk at the grocery store. In fact I read the ingredients on skim, 1%, 2% and whole milk, and was shocked to see that they actually ADD sugar to milk for flavor. No matter which fat content you choose, they are still adding in sugar. I haven't purchased any dairy except heavy cream ever since. Heavy cream has NO sugar added. Now I only drink unsweetened plain almond milk, and to be honest, I find it much more refreshing than real milk. After just a few weeks I started preferring the flavor of almond milk, and actually start craving it. I loves me some almond milk now.

I thought I had a lactose problem a while back, so I bought lactose free milk. I learned that it's not actually lactose free, they just add the enzyme you need to digest it. This might explain why the sugar is still there! Another thing I noticed that was super weird (this is not quite on topic), was that alot of dairy free cheese had milk listed as an allergen/ingredient.

He omitted two extremely healthy dairy products with no added sugar and lots of benefits: *Greek yogurt, plain, full fat.* I use it as a dressing for salads. I either use Greek yogurt and add avocado to the salad, or use olive oil as dressing and no avocado in the salad. *Plain white yogurt, full fat.* Not that good on its own, but I eat it with chopped peaches, strawberries or blueberries. It's just like the ones that come with the fruit on top, only that with way less sugar and no preservatives. Edit: and gorgonzola and brie..

I feel a lot lighter and others have noticed too which is a plus. I find it difficult to cut back on iced coffee but everything else like donuts, breads, muffins, bagels, cookies etc I’ve had no problem cutting from my diet. I don’t really care if I don’t ever go into “full ketosis” as I mainly am in this for the weight loss.

Checking the sugars or carbs is the key. :-) My current yoghurt is 3g carb/sugar (total) per 100g serving. It is "Fage" brand -- a plain, full fat, greek style, "set" yoghurt. Maybe not an everyday food, but very helpful and handy when travelling or camping. I add a little fibre like ground flax, cocoa nibs if I want crunch, or powdered psyllium husk and can mix in MCT oil, too.

If Dr Berg looked at regular greek yoghurt he would have seen that similar to the higher sugar in low fat milk, for greek yoghurt it's the same. The regular greek yoghurt I get is 10g net carbs for every 250g. 250g would be a massive bowl of yoghurt, a serving is usually half that, so a usual serving of 125g of the greek yoghurt I eat gives you 9.5g fat, 4.7g net carbs, 5g protein. I throw some double cream in there and add hemp seeds and almond nuts. Add some stevia sweetener to take the bitterness out and you have a pretty nice snack!

Ok I felt the need to comment on this. I have studied nutrition, have some medical background and have been on a healthy keto and intermittent fasting regimen for nearly 2 years with success. That been said i agree with everything said in this video except one thing. Yogurt. There are yogurts that i include in my keto diet for very specific reasons. Oikos Vanilla Triple zero and Icelandic are my two goto yogurts. Yes they have a small amount of sugar and small amount of carbs but it is very very low and compared to the fact the ingredients are natural and the sugar is fructose from lemon juice combined with the probiotic cultures in it as well as the benefits of the other nutrients i find it to be a welcome addition to a Healthy Keto diet. Good gut biome is essential to absorbing the needed nutrients to be able to maintain the keto regimen. It will break a fast and shift you out of ketosis but you just include it during your meal time and count it to you carb count as well as have it occasionally and not every day. I comsume these yogurts once or twice a week during meal time and on recovery days after a significant fast.

Fage Greek Plain Yogurt has 5g of natural sugar/carbs, mix in vanilla extract and allulose for a great keto snack. I eat it and do fine on Keto. Fairlife milk (cows milk) has 6 g of carbs/natural sugar per cup. I mix it with almond milk or water to reduce the carbs even more, or just use half a cup in keto cereals (Magic Spoon cereal does not throw me out of ketosis at all.) It's the only keto cereal I've found that I like and doesn't affect me.

You can make your own Greek yogurt by using half and half. It's just a higher fat yogurt. Bacteria eats most of the sugar anyway.
@jaminmc

Yes, that is the part Dr. Berg didn’t factor. The carbs in yogurt are pre-fermented values, and don’t factor the reduction from the Bacteria. Hence why whole milk plain yogurt has the same amount of carbs as whole milk does on the label. The same also goes for Kefir. We make our own Kefir and yogurt. And it has kept us in ketosis! Making yogurt out of half-and-half is the best! We use whole milk for the Kefir.
