Ketone Ranges Overview
Below 0.5 mmol/L is not considered ketosis - at this level, you’re far away from maximum fat-burning
Between 0.5-1.5 mmol/L is light nutritional ketosis - you’ll be getting a good effect on your weight, but not optimal
Around 1.5 - 3 mmol/L is what’s called optimal ketosis and is recommended for maximum weight loss
Values of over 3 mmol/L aren’t necessary - that is, they will achieve neither better nor worse results than being at the 1.5-3 level
Higher values can also sometimes mean that you’re not getting enough food. For type 1 diabetics, it can be caused by a severe lack of insulin
Below 0.5 mmol/L
If you’re readings are too low you may need to avoid all obvious sources of carbs, but also to be careful with your protein intake
Excess protein will converted into glucose in the body - large amounts of protein can also raise your insulin levels somewhat, which compromises optimal ketosis
Between 0.5 & 3 mmol/L
Nutritional Ketosis
*1.5-3 mmol/L is the optimal range for fat burning*
Known as nutritional ketosis, a state where the body is using ketones as a fuel source efficiently and safely
In individuals without diabetes or in those with controlled diabetes, having insulin on board to maintain healthy blood sugar levels keeps ketone production in the safe range
This is achieved by reducing carbohydrate-intake to below 50 grams, because when glucose from food is limited, but blood sugars are still in a healthy range and enough insulin is present, the body will begin to burn body fat for fuel instead, producing low levels of ketones in the bloodstream
Ketones in the 1-3 mmol/l range are not acidifying the body
Over 3 mmol/L
Starvation Ketosis
Starvation ketones are simply the result of not eating enough food over the course of several hours
Ketoacidosis
Because ketones are acid substances, high ketone concentrations in the blood may create acidosis
Ketoacidosis, commonly referred to diabetic ketoacidosis, is a very dangerous state where an individual with uncontrolled diabetes is effectively starving due to lack of insulin
In normal individuals, or those with well controlled diabetes, insulin acts to cancel the feedback loop and slow and stop the overproduction of ketones (insulin has a suppressant effect on ketone production)
Without this feedback loop, dangerous levels of ketones build up, acidifying the body

-0-0.5 MMOL per liter means you’re out of ketosis -0.5-1.5 MMOL per liter means you’re in light ketosis -1.5-3 MMOL per liter is optimal ketone range

@Dan-Irinel Dumitru The key data is the ratio of GLUCOSE/ KETONES BELOW 80 is good for weight lose Below 40 is good for therapeutic effects And below 20 for a serious illness This is a simplified GKI ratio.

My ketones recently have zoomed up and my blood sugar has come down. Ketones 5.9 today (the highest ever) and blood sugar is around 4.0 - 5.0 I am not hungry, my A1c is 5.0 (I'm T2) as of a couple weeks ago and all my nutrition as shown in the blood test is good. I have lost 30% of my body weight since 30 April. I'm not doing anything that different, for most of the time my ketones were around 1 or 1.5 at most. I tried really hard to get them a little higher and sometimes they frustratingly would drop below 0.5. Love keto, all my deranged numbers that were in the blood test back in April 2018 including blood glucose came back within the normal range. My blood sugar has gradually gone down which I am very happy about. Thank you for all your good work, love your channel!

I am Justin Sardines firefighter/paramedic and I have seen that sleep has an unusual Reaction to ketone levels please help me make some sense out of this. To the positive part, this is the Best channel not just for physical changes but, mental as well. If you're referring to difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep, that's due to a lack of carbs. Carbs trigger tryptophan with converts to serotonin which allows you to sleep. Quick bio-hack: allocate a majority of your carbs for the day to your evening meal. It helps a lot

I've had my ups and downs who doesn't but, this is what makes my body & mind Feel Great. Best of all the HANGRY dissappears-!! Who knew that was possible. I use the monitor here and there, not obsessed with it. Or results. Some are. I'm just happy I feel better :) And now being 70lbs lighter would make Anyone feel better.

Thomas, FYI, I noticed that so many people prick their fingers and not on the side of the ring finger, the finger least sensitive to pricks and on the side, you'll hardly feel it. Also, few know that if you prick on the meaty part of the palm where you'd touch one with a karate chop. You'll hardly feel this prick as well.

Thomas DeLauer I have a question. I’m having a hard time balancing out my protein and fat. I have downloaded serval apps and track everything I eat! I’ve stayed under 27 grams of carbs every day. But when it comes to protein and fats, one or their other is always off. What’s the best way to balance the two? Next week I want to start cutting a lob proteins.

Since I started tracking both with the Mojo it’s been very helpful. I can see the direct effects of specific foods and serving sizes! Also, nice to note that even on days that I slip out of keto, I quickly slip back in within 12-24 hours. Fat adapted with flexibility 🤓

WOW !! Such an informative video and so spot on. as proven by my short experience of being on a keto diet, as a 74 yr old vet fighting the va to understand that being on the keto diet for just 2 months , started Nov 9, quit metformin Nov 12 with normal sugar readings 75-80's and 90 , Blood Pressure daily readings of approx 115/70 and weight loss from 175 to todays weight of 147 ( 28 lbs) , one va dr said I needed to regain the weight??? My first test with your keto meter was this morniing showed my ketosis was 1.8 but as coming off the colonoscopy fast of 3 days I did consume a higher level of proteins yesterday in one meal daily. My sugar being liltle high of 95 but your explanation of higher carbs lowering the ketosis levels gives me hope that tomorrow my ketosis readings will be a lil higher. Thank you and Dr. Berg for possibly extending my life span so I can be around to see my second chance family of 15yr old daughter, 11 and 9 year old son to reach their young adulthood. I even got a second chance at Pine car derbys with my son and we are now working on one for next month. God Bless you.

I am 67, have been living a keto life style 6 months. My ketones usually do not get above 2.0 (Keto Mojo) but my GKI score is often between 2.5 to 4.5 so I do not get alarmed my ketones are not high enough. Three days a week I do moderate anaerobic training and when the weather permits I do high aerobic activity bicycling for many hours at a time. I IF 20 hours daily too.

I received the Keto Mojo test equipment and in only 2 weeks of working the program, my first reading was 1.6. I quit taking metformin a week ago and hitting the gym some and my blood glucose level yesterday after walking an hour on the treadmill while reading "Fat for Fuel" was 104. With Thomas' Channel and some external readings, I am going to cure myself from Big Pharma and the Processed Food Industries EVIL! Thank you for your help Mr. DeLauer

Just tested blood ketone level for the first time since commencing 3weeks ago and it was 2.8mmol using the GlucoRx meter that measures haematocrit too. Thanks Thomas it’s obviously working I have gained all of the information through your channel thanks for helping.

I will have to look into getting one of those...I rely a lot on intermittent fasting sometimes to help me with ketosis, I have a hard time keeping carbs under 50 per day...when I do, I'm like super proud of myself! If I could see a reading of my keytones, it may help me not stress over carbs so much....

Good video on testing. So many ppl test urine which is a waste of time, I have my clients test ketones AND glucose, then have them calculate their GKI to see how deep into nutritional ketosis they are in. This is another aspect the general population that tries keto miss. Your GKI number is THE most important factor to Consider when trying to lose body fat, not just ketones alone. You can be 0.5 or above, but if your glucose is elevated, your not going to be in deep nutritional ketosis.

Thomas normally take the product sell with a grain of salt. You know what I’m listening closer...Purchased Keto Mojo, head was spinning reading instructions. Called their help line, awesome customer service walked me through every step (just wish I had ordered the Bluetooth connector, but its now on order) understanding my #’s so much better. Anyone else beside me having complaints about the KETO MOJO strips not accepting the blood sample? It's like the opening is plugged or something. Contacted KETO MOJO and they suggest that my technique is the blame. Come on,it's simple to do. No apology NOTHING At one dollar per strip and the product not working,I would caution buying. Shame

Keto is a way of life. been on it for 44 days and lost 9.4 kgs. I'm back to my pre-kids weigh from 9 years ago. The only thing I'm upset about is that I have not come across this diet before!

I support the idea of self testing ketones and do it routinely. Give GREAT insight into how doing different nutrition things impacts ketosis - especially if relaxing a bit on a TGIF social outing and being slightly "naughty" with food and distilled spirits. I like knowing how far I drop to the lower side of ketone production (or know if I am using ketones more deeply by exercise and my metabolism is not keeping up with demand) based on diet, exercise and social changes. It's a relief to see how fast I can now recover to sold ketone production and also see how it varies by time of day during long fasting periods. Bio-context awareness is really a good thing and motivating too.

I stumbled across your channel on a keto page on Facebook. I started keto 15 August and dropped a substantial amount of weight. My allergist of all people recommended the diet to me. I have horrible food allergies, and honestly it was getting expensive having to keep an epi pen (s) with me at all times and the large consumption of Benadryl at other times. I actually stopped keto during the holidays, more to see if changing I could tolerate specific foods again...nope still can't eat potatoes, rice, corn, or beads 😢 and another reason, my hair had been falling out in clumps since I started. I've gone and watched every video I could of yours, and still can't find the answer. I do know that a lack of protein will cause the hair to fall out, but I've increased my protein consumption, still falling out in clumps, and it's actually depressing. I started taking supplements, and now they're making my nails brittle, I can't seem to win 🤷

I really like it and use it a lot. Even though I live in Germany and have to import the products;) but the blue tooth connector is a really awesome and helpful gadget. But it would be great to have a video about using best practices, times, ranges etc. But definitely worth purchasing the product, even if it’s not the cheapest solution if you are not located in the US.

I'm insulin resistant and been doing keto for two weeks. I measured my blood ketones for the first time this afternoon and it registered 3.1 mmol, so I guess that's a good reading right?

What do you think of the blood Glucose to Ketone Ratio (or "Dr. Boz Ratio"), which is based on the GKI (Glucose : Ketone Index)? It seems a simple, uncomplicated means of determining effective Ketosis. You divide your Blood Glucose by your Blood Ketones (American Numbers), and if the number (your Ratio) is less than 80, you are in Fat Burning Mode; If your Ratio is under 40, you are in an Autaphagy or Immune System Healing Mode; and if you can get that Ratio under 20, you can help heal things like Cancer. I have an issue with Mojo Keto. I can take three separate strips and use blood from the same stick. All three readings will be different, some wildly different. I use an alcohol swab to cleanse the area I am sticking to make sure nothing on my skin skews the reading. I also don't use the first drop. I use a separate alcohol swab to wipe that first drop of blood and then use the second drop. So far, the company hasn't gotten back to me on these discrepancies..

I had the same issue today and sent them an email thru Amazon. They already responded with some pointers and an offer to send me more strips to replace the ones I bought. I mentioned to them that it could be a bad production lot. The last Keto Mojo strips that I had worked perfectly and were very consistent.

It's prolly the alcohol. You shouldn't use alcohol to wipe before or in between tests for the same reason you shouldn't drink alcohol while doing Keto. Use hydrogen peroxide instead. It takes longer to dry, but who cares? I learned this from a certified phlebotomist.

Four months into Keto. Down 24 lbs. just purchase the Keto Mojo meter. First reading 2.2. Pretty happy with that. I had to reset after the holidays. Started dropping Carbs down to 5 whole carbs per day. Also added some light exercises daily. Age 56 4’11” now 108 pounds. Shooting for 105. What changes do I need to make as I maintain? I do plan to stay at 1200 calories.

If you're losing weight at 1200 calories, you'll probably have to up them a bit to maintain once you've reached your goal

@@prestagraber1145 Bump u your calories a little at a time to find the sweet spot. Add some healthy carbs back into your plan like some brussel sprouts ,cabbage etc. See what wrks fr you. I would def not go lower with your calories. Your body will adjust to that number.

Just ordered my ketomojo kit. Noticed the pee strips seemed up and down. Since starting I’m not sure if I’ve been in keto or not? 5’6” male and started at 200#. lost 10# in a week then 5# over the next 2 weeks and now seem to be locked in at 185#. I’m tracking food and should be in Keto, but not loosing weight now. Hopefully the ketometer and continued keto goal weight loss will kick in again soon. Thanks for all your help and videos. I’m going to stay positive and learn this!!

Great video. i've been tracking ketones using the ketomojo since March. The first few months I found myself hitting 3.5-5.0 mmol after my endurance boxing workouts now I actually see my ketone levels dropping from usual 1.5 range to 0.7ish after boxing workout. Was worried about this initially but it makes sense now that I understand the fat adaptation. Thanks for all the content you put out. I'm healthier and happier than ever and owe much of that to people like yourself.

2 month of strict keto diet 0-20g of carbs daily. My ketone lvl was 0.6mmol. 1 week ago i've got little too much penaut butter (300g) and that was enough to kick me out of ketosis. Today i'm on 0.2 mmol with keto flu trying my best to get back( eating only meat and eggs).The amount of time to adapt again is crazy.

Won’t be like that for long. After six months or so there’s usually more wiggle room, you snap back faster and there’s no keto flu.

To me, it doesn't matter exactly where you are on the ketone scale with BHB, Acetone, or Acetoacetate so long as you actually are in ketosis. I mean, if you consume MCT oil, it's going to elevate your ketones, but that doesn't mean it's coming from your body's fat reserves, so it's not necessarily an accurate indicator of how efficiently you're losing fat mass. People expect to see practically ketoacidosis levels of ketones because they want results now, now, now... but that kind of expectation leads to people getting discouraged and giving up. They need to be patient and understand that keto/intermittent fasting is long-term process and investment, and should not be treated as a fad or crash diet that you get off of as soon as you reach a desired weight. The race is long, and in the end, it's only with ourselves.

I have to tell my mom this all the time. She plateaus on her weight loss and with her blood monitor she sees relatively high ketone levels, but it's because she consumes a lot of MCT oil. So I have her cut back on the MCTs and total calories and she fasts, and the blood monitor shows a lower level of ketones but she experiences more weight loss.

Honest review here: I've been using my keto mojo meter for 6 full months now and finally had to buy another glucose monitor just to finally see if 95-200 is just what my blood glucose is or if the monitor is faulty. Sure enough my blood glucose is around 58-63 consistently (lower than I want it to be!) using the other brand of glucose meter. For reference I am an active 5'7" female and weigh 119 lbs . I starting eating a ketogenic diet to reduce inflammation/extreme sciatic pain due to several herniated discs...and it worked-I am pain free. But I still want to monitor my ketones and glucose since I just cant seem to get my blood glucose down (according to the keto mojo reader). because of this faulty product I've been eating less and less, trying to get those numbers down. Im in a constant state of light headedness as i have just been consuming way too few calories/glucose. I am down to OMAD (for past 3 of the 6 months I've been eating keto), very strict homemade healthy keto meals, only drink electrolytes and black coffee while fasting and still the keto mojo says that my blood glucose is over 100 after a 2 hour workout and 24 hour fast. Their customer service is non existent. I've sent several emails only to get short auto responses of 'read this article on our website" with a link....which i had already read the entire useless website twice before i sent the email. The meter and mostly the test strips are very expensive and when you test 2-3 times a day (to monitor changes in fasting vs post fed state vs 3 hours after meal) they go fast so hopefully this comment can help someone else steer clear of this meter...buy a cheaper one that offers a money back guarantee if it doesn't work.

Hello Thomas, I started to cut out my sodium. Only little 1/4 of teospoon in the morning of Himalian pink salt and removed all products which have higher sodium.And i noticed that i fall asleep and sleep a lot better lost maybe in a week 2-3kg water after i did that and still loosing. My face now is much less bloated. I consume like up to 20grams of carbohydrates. How it's possible ? Am i that sensitive to salt?

I was wondering about this also. I've read a little bit and my meter calculates it because I test both ketones and glucose at the same time (different test strips) but I would love to hear your explanation because you make it easier to understand.

I have been using KetoMojo and my ketones have been 1.2-1.7mmol/L. I have had 2 times that it’s been 3.2 and 3.5. I have bees doing strict keto and daily 16/8 intermittent fasting. I have also been doing prolong fasting 24-48 hours once every 2 weeks. I have been doing this for almost 2 months. I have lost a total of 41 pounds. My question to you is when is it ideal to measure serum ketone levels? In AM or PM? After a meal? Is there a specific time that you would recommend? And how often should one have a lipid panel to follow up colesterol,TG, LDL and HDl? Also when should I evaluate my testosterone levels? I am a doctor (MD board certified OBGYN) and I am making my body and keto a research project. I do believe that the body biochemistry is using fats as an energy source and that keto is healthy and not detrimental to our health. So if you could just give any recommendations on when to test, ideal times. Also are you going to review Jillian Michaels negative comments on the ketogenic lifestyle?

how can you tell if your ketones are the result of the fat you are eating vs coming from your body fat? Once you become fat adapted, should your macro's for fat intake be adjusted downward since the "pump is primed" so to speak and your liver is running on ketones vs. glucose? Thus, if you don't eat as much fat, your body will look to your fat stores for it's energy?..This would be a great video concept.

The thing is... I do extended fasts (very very overweight so it's fine) and I know for sure the strips are a pretty cool way, at least that shows me that I'm having excess acetoacetate being made, which is a pretty good sign to me that my body is running off of my own body fat now. I've tested it a few times already, when I'm past Day 2 of my Water fast, the stick will usually be REALLY DARK... During the first day, it usually will stay CLEAR, like completely, maybe a hint of light pink color by the end of the night if I haven't eaten for many hours already, and then on Day 2, it usually gets a nice MEDIUM color but yeah usually Day 3 or 4, the strip will be extremely dark. It's a really good indicator to me like I said, I fast and so I KNOW there's NO SOURCE OF DIETARY FAT COMING IN that could be to blame for excess acetoacetate being excreted at any moment. I Should mention, on the day that I eat normally (over 100G of Carbs), I will test about 1 - 2 Hours post-meal because if I test right after the meal, like within 30 minutes, more than likely it will come out dark still because the urine that comes out is urine that was in me before I had my meal so there's a lot of Keto bs going on still lol and so anyway, yeah I usually test like, every 4 hours and about 3 - 5 times PER DAY. As I said, it's shown pretty consistent results overall. An interesting thing that happened recently was, I broke my fast, ate, measured my levels 2 hours later and the stick came back clear, no color at all but then when I ate some AVOCADO later in the day and measured again a few hours later, the stick came back LIGHT PINK suddenly once again and then later on in the day, many hours after I had any trace of dietary FAT enter my mouth, (and if anything had probably just had Carb-based snacks) when I tested myself with another strip, you guessed it. CAME BACK completely CLEAR, so absolutely no fat being mobilized to give me energy so I guess it's proof the strips would be a dumb way to measure your keto level if you're actually EATING every single day and being on a normal Keto diet but that's just my two cents hehe.

Please make a video about what your glucose to ketone ratio should be when doing keto. (there is very little about this online I checked). My glucose drops super low to like 3.0 mmol yet I feel fine, yet internet doctors say this is when you're hypoglycemic and you're about to die.

Since this video was made: - The meter he shows is obsolete and they will make strips for it for a limited time only. - The company has a trade-in that is going on now for what you have and the new meter has more functionality and tests twice as many thing to render the result. - The strips for the new meter are less expensive. They are no longer a dollar, they are 80 cents now. - The strips are individually packed with descant for long, accurate life. - It is FDA approved which means it is required to fall within their guidelines for accuracy.

Hi Thomas on he off chance you'll read ALL of this: I do pretty serious IF & Long Fasting since June 6, 2018. I do IF 18-21 hours on week days and 16/8s on weekends (and lift/run 12 hours Fasted 95% of the time, I just did a 7 day fast 20-30 days ago and I often Fast for 36-48 once a week due to gym/work schedule) . Although I'm probably around 15-18% BF I'm pretty Insulin Resistant and I decided to try the Ketogenic Diet with my Fasting regiment. I picked up the KetoMojo Kit and was a little surprised to find out the I'm generally only somewhere between 0.5- 1.2 and only rarely get to the optimum range having been at 1.5 once and 1.7 once since January 25, 2019 (I've been below 0.5 more times than I've been above 1.5). One thing have noticed is that both times I know that I was above 1.5 I had a serious fat feast the night before and/or chugged a fat Ghee or Butter,MCT,Coconut oil,heavy cream coffee. I realize based on all of your great instruction that I may just be fairly fat adapted, but I was wondering if you could share a way to test that theory or does going into optimum range only after using a fat bomb coffee indicate that I'm not getting enough fat generally... I still am having a hard time getting over my fear of fat after all.

I met Dr.Dominic D'Agostino twice last month at his lab at USF here in Tampa. After I showed him my Keto Mojo numbers, he informed me that 0.5 - 3.0mmol/L was the optimal fat burning range while in ketosis. I have been keto for 14 months and sitting for an office job for that duration. I eat omad and fast 48 hours 2x a week.. my ketones are mostly .4 whether I'm fasting or not, and lower most days but I only eat eggs and kale smoothies for my meal. Does my ketones mean I'm only making what I need?

May I ask why you choose to eat only eggs and kale, and the amount of weight lost? I'm just curious. I tried keto in 2014 for the first time and lost 20 lbs in one month. I've been doing keto this time, with some slip ups, for going on two months. Prior to this recent slip up, my ketones registered at 1.9mmol/L, and I was consuming 40-50g or carbs/day. I find that I have to really increase my intake of Mg while doing keto because I become very constipated and have muscle cramps. The OMAD and fasting are piquing my interest for health reasons. How are you feeling doing OMAD?

@@martykirby7311 No you don't. If your fat adapted your body will tap into stored fats if your eating less fat. Its one f the amazing things about keto, especially if you are trying to lose weight, however it will only work this way if you are truly fat adapted.

How long does it take the body to replenish ketones? As example I’m fat adapted and prior to working out my ketones measure 2.3. Post workout they are in the range of 1.3-1.5. Just curious!

Question: I've been on the keto program for about 7 months now, know exactly what to eat and what not to in order to maintain ketosis. I can say with much confidence that I am now keto-adapted. The confusion lies in the fact that after the 4th month, my blood ketone levels plummeted from 1.5-2.5 down to 0.5. I didn't change my diet at all - been pretty consistent as a matter of fact. My question for you is this: I have read through a few sources and other keto advocates that after prolonged exposure into ketosis, your body becomes efficient at utilizing ketones for fuel, and thus will not register them on a meter (I use keto-mojo btw). Can you confirm or disprove this?

I am having the same issue. I use to measure on average 2.2. Sometimes a tad lower. After 3 months now I cant get above .08. If I am lucky 1.0. I eat at 65/30/.

Thomas, I've been really strict keto for about 10 weeks now, and I recently picked up a Keto Mojo, just to better understand what is happening in my body. I've started a spreadsheet to log GKI, but I'm wondering what we should be considering with the Hematocrit and Hemoglobin values that the Keto Mojo also provides while in ketosis? My averages so far are: GKI 4.0, Hematocrit 39.4% and Hemoglobin at 13.3. My understanding from basic searches is that my Hematocrit and Hemoglobin values are both at the bottom of, or marginally low for an adult male and may indicate low red blood cell values. Is this normal to expect in ketosis?

From what I've gathered morning levels are going to be a more accurate measure of your ketone levels, or 2-3 hours after you've eaten. They're usually at their lowest during the mornings and should give you a good base line to judge. So if they're 1mmol/L during a fasted test result you're doing well.
