Nutritional Ketosis has NOTHING to do with Ketoacidosis. The former is a powerful nutritional tool for correcting problems caused by the standard western diet, and the latter is a serious medical condition that kills people. Ketosis vs Ketoacidosis is simple, listen as an MD explains the difference.
Any medical or nutrition professional should know that these two things are very, very different, and that nutritional ketosis can Not cause ketoacidosis. I'll explain in this video the exact differences between the two so you can share the facts with friends and family.
I'm not sure why my mind brought up Jeffery Dahmer in this video, but you'll have to see if the parable I tell makes sense to you. Nutritional Ketosis is a wonderful, and very Safe tool you can use to optimize your health. Please use it.

Thank you!! I’m a RN...I had a CRNA lecture me about how bad “ketoacidosis” was for my body and my kidneys and how dangerous it was...I said “I completely agree! That’s why I want to stay in ketosis.” She kept arguing with me that I was in ketoacidosis... I finally said “look...I’m conscious...but if I need an insulin drip I’ll let ya know!” Now she and her daughter do ketosis...go figure

The806Traveler it’s because we health professionals have been drilled on CONVENTIONAL medical (and health) “wisdom”, which sees anything “out of the ordinary “ as a bad thing. High fat versus low fat... is one example.... and some will still insists that low fat (and “healthy” grains) is the way to go, even though they see the rising numbers in diabetes and obesity.

So if dka is the body cant use glucose as energy so it is forced to used fat as energy, and in keto diet there is 0 carb so the body uses fat as energy, the only diffetence is the amount of blood sugar level, so are you saying the acidity in blood is caused by high blood sugar rather that the process of ketosis?

I have been calling it nutritional ketosis for 14 months now. You would not believe how many medical doctors or nurses I have to educate on the difference between the two processes. Its unbelievable. My own doctor said she would not recommend low carb and informed me that she spoke to an Endocrinologist and he agreed with her. I am keeping her as my physician for now as she struggles with her weight. I have had some ketogenic experiences with her 2 times in the grocery store. Her basket is high carb and GMO foods. She commented on the amount of cartons of Happy Eggs in my basket and the high fat of wild caught salmon. Kerrygold butter and cold pressed extra virgin coconut oil. She was buying conventionally raised animal products. It amazes me how much knowledge is out there in the internet world, yet those who claim ketogenic is bad they don't practice care for themselves but want to guide me to health !?!?!

I hear you!!! Doctors should be required to take courses in and prove competency in nutrition topics because food is medicine!!! Why does traditional medicine not recognize the critical importance of doctors having working knowledge of nutrition in their diagnoses and treatments of their patients? It boggles the mind.

Sheila Wassenmiller this is because medical schools are funded largely by big pharma, and as a result, nutritional education is heavily neglected. If people get healthy via diet, then drug companies lose $$.

It's not so much the conventionally raised and GMO products that show how clueless she is about nutrition--it's her demonization of fats (even healthy fats) and embrace of starches & sugars. That was taught in college in the 1950s to those studying to become "registered dieticians," and nutrition wasn't even taught in med school as late as the '70s (maybe hardly even today)--most doctors--especially older ones--are still getting their (mis)info from those HomeEc-style dinosaur dieticians who followed the "Food Pyramid" designed by grain lobbyists. To demonstrate how much cutting-edge nutritional science has changed, for the past 3 years I've been a patient of my hospital system's weight mgmt. clinic, which is part of the Cardiology dept.! We are given the choice to start on (ugh) protein shakes, prefab meals, or a near-keto diet, later morphing into a still very-low-carb diet. Maintenance is Mediterranean, with emphasis on olive oil, olives, nuts, eggs, fatty fish; and what little dairy allowed is whole, not skim. Still low-carb veg and low-sugar fruits and very occasional whole grains...not stuff made from flour. I remember back in 1972 when I mentioned I was trying Atkins, my GYN's nurse said, "careful--that puts you into acidosis!"

A friend who was type 2, called me ALL the way out because she heard how dangerous keto is bc of ketoacidosis. I explained it to her, but she looked at me like I had 3 heads and kept telling me how I was "at risk". Dangerous to do for long term. Years later, my a1c has been under control at 4.1 and I feel better than i ever had. Thanks again for a great video and I loved the fable too! It's a shame that people get scared like this and the real shame is that the people that probably need it the most: Obese, lowered kidney function, fatty liver, pre-diabetes, etc... are the ones that would be the most scared by the mix up on the difference between nutritional keto and ketoacidosis. Again thank you!

I went to the pharmacy to ask if they have a dual glucometer that also measures blood ketones. The first question was obviously why I wanted it, so I explained. The pharmacist was shocked and horrified that anybody would be putting themselves in ketosis voluntarily, and asked me if it is safe to do so, saying she thought it was very scary. Sigh. Thanks for this video, now I can explain it better next time. :)

I’m one of the folks that’s pretty regularly testing high in ketones. Initially I was worried, since conventional medical literature and my nursing training told me that I was going to be seriously ill. All of my other tests and lab work revealed pretty good values, which had my physicians “confused.” Not until I saw an old family physician (purely by coincidence, while accompanying my grandmother... who’s over 100 and as they say “healthy as a horse”) did I finally talk to someone who understood. (He also did a battery of tests, to be sure.) His “diagnosis”: I’m totally fine. My family has always eaten healthy... and my body was “programmed “ early in my life, to be a ketone producer and fat burner.

Great Video Doc! My Dad explained ketoacidosis to me when I was a youngster. We never really discussed ketosis back in those days(late 1950's) but in the early 1960's was when he adopted a ketogenic diet. He didn't call it that but it was a very high fat moderate protein low carb diet. I do 1 meal and 1 small "snack" per day. Each meal/snack are separated by 12 hours. I feel pretty healthy except for the accumulation of mechanical damage over my 69 years.

Ketoacidosis does not just affect T1 diabetes, it affects T2 also and the incidence rate is increasing. I've had many patients be in DKA and receive the initial diagnosis of T2 while admitted to the floor. Indeed it is infuriating to hear licensed providers try to scare people by using these terms incorrectly. But we know that if patients fix their health problems then that provider won't get that q3 month revenue for compulsory office visits and labs 🙄. It's disturbing that revenue is more important than accurate patient care and teaching.

The other day I stumbled across the “ketoacidosis confusion” while shopping on amazon for a Ketone breath anylyzer. Several products have a scale that is supposed to tell when your body is in ketosis and when it’s too high it would turn red. The instructions state that “Red” means you are in ketoacidosis. They actually use the word “ketoacidosis” in their instructions. What do you think about companies selling products that actually include this in their instructions right on Amazon. I’m sure this is very confusing for so many people! Thanks so much! Looking forward to you tackling this topic. I’m sure this might be where a lot of people are drawing this conclusion from.

I appreciate you trying to make the world clear on this subject. I never heard about Ketosis until we had a dairy cow get Ketosis after calving and milking heavy. We have a dairy farm. Her body would burn more fat than she was taking in. It can be fatal for cows, unless they are given an IV of sugar water (glucose). So with knowing this, my first thought, with people going Keto, I just knew it could be so harmful to their health. I have since come to realize that it's not the same with humans, but we still must be careful, especially if we're Type I Diabetes. Thank you so much!!

I am a mum of a 13 year old diabetic since she was 2,5 years old 😣. For years i fighted doctors cause they wanted my daughter to eat " the amount of carbs necessary for her age". I didn't knew then about the keto diet but i had the instinct and guts to think on my own that if carbs got my daughter feeling sick and bad than more carbs are not going to do any better. Now she wares a freestyle senzor to monitor her blood sugar every 15 mins...prooves i was right. On the principle smaller intakes of carbs can produce smaller mistakes...my daughter eats the amount of carbs of a 4 year old "portion " as doctors said. Now because she is 13 and hormones play us tricks we have hgb 8.2 but we fight to get it to 7 so help me God. Yet...i am struggling for my daughters health every day...i do my best to learn to keep her safe. No diabetic complicatinons so far .

Thank you! I'm sick of hearing this rumour. I have had ketoacidosis one time only, during pregnancy. Not nice and we're both lucky to be here. I wasn't even doing keto at the time lol I was getting bg readings of 24! I don't know what reading the us equivalent is, but trust me that's high. My specialist nurse has type 1 and is very sensible, he thinks keto is great and very healthy.

Unfortunately, I know the way you can get ketoacidosis without being a Diabetic. My my daughter was hospitalized when she was 13 for non Diabetic Ketoacidosis due to Anorexia. That was the first time she needed a feeding tube, but sadly, not the last. She is 18 now, and still struggles. I put on a lot of weight from stress and making meals to make her gain weight... She is 18 and now it is time I take care of myself for once, and get my health back in order, which is why I am starting Keto, with the goal of Carnivore.

There is no way to have ketoacidosis unless you area type 1 diabetic, or a type 2 in really bad condition. The moment your blood glucose raises also does insulin, which stops the ketones production (and blood glucose should go down too). As long as your body is able to produce some insulin, this will not happen.

As Keto goes mainstream and starts to make certain people look for other kinds of work, I'm sure there are people out there invested in circulating this confusion and misunderstanding. We have to keep pushing back and take personal responsibility for being able to explain this clearly and articulately.

Plaque isn’t even necessarily bad on a natural diet. Some cultures that eat their natural diet have residues all over their teeth yet no cavities. It’s probably the lack of vitamins and minerals in our food that make it necessary

We definitely need to floss. Most of us have crooked teeth in some degree so there's always a couple of food left between the teeth. But a high sugar/grain diet is on of the principal causes of misalignment and bad teeth. Eskimos in the past who have ate a almost fully carnivore diet had perfect teeth in comparison to north americans and europeans, per example.

I started intermittent fasting at 174lb a month ago. I fast from 10pm to 2 pm when I have lunch at work. I eat 2 meals, as much fat as I can get into me, like bacon and sardines with a cup of coffee inoculated with ghee and MTC oil for lunch. Salmon and collard greens for dinner followed imidiatly by either chai pudding or whipped cream with blueberries, or Greek yogurt. I will say that I love me some Greek yogurt and it saddens me that one serving is all I can have in a day because I could crush a container easy. What I like to do is zip up a quarter cup of blueberries and raspberries and mix it with a little bit of Greek yogurt and a cup of heavy cream, and use that as the liquid for my chai pudding. It is so silky and delishious. I digress, I fasted for 5 days a week for the first week, then every day for the lest 3. I threw 2, 24 hour fasts in there for good measure, and I’m still 174 lb. I don’t weigh myself very often, but I thought I would be down at least a couple pounds. What gives? Do I need to eat more? Should I start exorsizing again, because I sleep like shit and I don’t want to get up an hour early to get me sweat on. At least when I was just eating clean and doing fasted cardeo before work I slept like a champ. Now I’m waking up every hour.

stizan24 you've answered your own question, yes start exercising again, and don't worry about what the scale says. Use a measuring tape instead. Another thing which is quite common is that you can stall at the same weight for weeks, then you suddenly start peeing like a racehorse and boom! 9 pounds gone. It happens because your fat cell get confused and fill up with water, and is called whoosh effect. How do you make a chai pudding? I'm liking the sound of that!
@missmayflower
@missmayflower 6 лет назад
A lot of people stall from eating dairy. Also, blueberries are really high carb. I’m assuming you mean chia pudding. Chia seeds have 12 grams of carbs per ounce. So it’s likely that you never got into ketosis, as your carbs for the day could be over 20. So you have a few things to eliminate, and need to have more salad. “As much fat as I can get” could mean your calories are way high. The goal is not to overdo fat, but make sure you get enough to satisfy.
@stizan24
@stizan24 6 лет назад
So I should go back to eating copious amounts of spinach with lunch and my grilled meats or Crack slaw for dinner, with a.bowl of brocolli for dinner. Cut the dairy, and just a wee bit of chia pudding in the evening. And get my.lazy but up an hour and a half early, sip a black rifle coffee, and hit the weights. I was doing cardio before I started keto, and I was doing pretty good, but I don't want to get up at 6am

And I was on ketosis for a couple months before I started fasting. I lost 6 lb the first few weeks and then another 8 in the 3 months after. I started fasting because of the other health benefits associated with it.

Thank you for this. I actually AM a type one diabetic, but I also follow a fasting lifestyle. I definitely know there's a big difference between ketosis and ketoacidosis, but I don't really know how to sort it all out in my head, lol. So it's not really the ketones themselves, they are just a sign of either of those states.

I am diabetic type one. I went into DKA 6 times in 2018 and was admitted to the ER. I have to check my ketones daily so that I can see the signs of when they start to go up and I can know ahead of time when I am headed for DKA. When I call my DR. Tell him my sugar and my ketone levels so I have been advised not to go on the keto diet. Otherwise I'd be in the hospital all the time wondering if I am in Ketosis or DKA. I am on an insulin pump so it's not that I am not taking insulin regularly. If I don't have enough carbs, I go to low and then I have to eat extra to get it back up.( which in turn causes highs) So it's better to have some carbs and protein and keep my sugars at a happy medium. I am an unusual case though, because I have gastropareis, so when I am nausea or throwing up, I end up on the brat diet until my stomach can tolerate a normal diet. I'm not saying that the keto diet causes DKA but it can confuse you (without further test) whether the ketones are coming from the diet or true DKA.

Hi, Cassie I thought you might be able to help me with my question. My 10 yr old son got diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 4 months ago. We check his ketones level usually daily and sometimes we find out he has trace or even large amounts of ketones in his urine but the suprising part is that this is happening on a normal or low blood sugar. His dr even doesn't know why is that. Can you go to DKA with low or normal blood sugar???? He is not sick ( cold or flu) and the carb intake is different every day. Sometimes 50 60 gram of carb and sometimes 100 grams of carbs. Pls help. Thank you

My son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes last year at age 4. He was sick off and on for 5 days before diagnosis, and by that point was so weak he didn't even want to walk. After spending 2 days and nights in the peds ICU doing blood sugar checks hourly and hooked up to an insulin IV, it's completely laughable to think that this is in any way similar to eating a ketogenic diet. When I'm fasted and in ketosis, my blood sugar is anywhere between 65-90, while his was over 450!

As a T1D who was sent to the hospital with ketoacidosis by ambulance, before being diagnosed, I can attest that an ABG is paaaainful. Was black and blue almost up to my elbow after having multiple done over the next three days there. On a side note, severe ketoacidosis hurts a lot in an of itself. Felt like what I suspect a heart attack feels like, for hours, as well as severe abdominal pain and painful throat from all the stomach acid corroding the mucous membranes from the vomiting. Right before the ambulance arrived, I had started vomiting “coffee grounds” because I was probably bleeding somewhere in my throat.

All my lab work was in the normal range except vitamin D, which was high. I have popped the D since 2020. My keytone level was 5.0 and labeled abnormal.
