but it is necessary for many of us to be strict with 20 carbs or lower. And many of us haven't been able to reverse our T2D in 3 months. I'm 3 years in and have gone from over an A1C of 10 to 5.8. that is being consistent with NOT going off plan. it's wonderful to see so many that you interview do it so quickly but in reality I believe there are more of us that requires more time. we feel discouraged when we don't respond as fast but know that we ARE doing the correct WOE. I want to encourage those who are struggling, keep it up. it's worth the fight.

Keto is not for everyone. Every body is different and each body responds differently. I was doing Keto without the great results lots of people talk about. I watched an interview from the guys at Mastering Diabetes with Dr. Neal Barnard about the real reason behind insulin resistance and how cutting out animal proteins and instead consuming lots of veggies and fruits could help in reversing insulin resistance. I gave it a try and so far It has worked out well for me. I've felt better with that diet and I would recommend to you to hear them out.
@JWB671

Excess calories from either too much higher fat protein foods or too many carbs will cause insulin resistance. The white guy from mastering diabetes is clearly malnourished though, he needs more protein asap. Roy Taylor has proven to reverse type two you have to get lean which means a big calorie deficit until that happens. He does it with a 700 calorie per day diet that is 25% fat, 38% carbs and 37% protein. You have to weigh everything and count your calories. I went from 245lbs to 163lbs at 6’3” tall doing this and my BG is awesome now and I eat rice and potatoes at every meal as well as ground beef and eggs. The quantity is what is important.

@@redescubriendo7609 Fruits and high carb vegetables raise my blood sugar too high and it takes ages for it to then come down. They are often worse than a cake or lolly for me. So whilst I would prefer to eat more fruit and vegetables I'm definately limited. Glad your doing well with that though.

You are correct, some have damaged their pancreas because of long term high carbohydrate use. Sometimes it can be repaired quickly, sometimes much longer and for some the pancreas won’t fully recover. Persistence is critical, congratulations on your progress! Don’t ever give up. I am praying for your successful journey to optimum health.

I’ve been a type 2 diabetic for years and I now use my meter to determine my diet I check my sugar every 30 minutes after a meal and my cap is 140 peak if I stay below that I consider that meal acceptable if it reaches 141-160 I wait a few weeks and try it a second time to make sure it was the meal and not something else and everything over 161 is a hard not again

After istening to different diabetes channels, yours and Drs you recommend. I have taken from each what works best for me. Took your advice & I had begun to use my meter to figure out what foods spiked for me. To my utter Joy I found that I can enjoy simple ingredient sourdough bread sandwiches , 1/2 C refried beans & also 1/2C of instant potatoes. If I hadn’t of listened to you to use my meter, these foods would have unnecessary been eliminated from my meals. Instead because of my meter I continue to enjoy them. Rice / reg flour tortillas are still a no go for me. I eat a two meals a day within a 6 hour period. I have been blessed because I enjoy savory food so much more than sweet. Although I must say that I end the day with a small square of dark chocolate. It is not a one size fits all disease.

Dr. Westman is an obesity doctor. So I believe he limits cheeses because of the high calories in them. Most of his patients are obese or morbidly obese and need to drop weight as that is a huge factor for developing diabetes. Hence, the first phase of his book is gear towards those types of patients. I remember reading Dr. Atkins where he said the only carbs that affect blood sugar are net carbs. However, after many years participating on low carb , on-line discussion groups, I found that many people can only lose weight or manage blood sugar by following a total carb number approach. So, it really is individual. I rely on counting net carbs which can mean more calories than if I just counted just straight carbs. So, I practice strict portion control also. What I like about Pastor Dennis is his encouraging us to rely on Mike the Meter to find out what works best. That has helped me so much.

I have an alternative take on things... 1 gram of sugar, depending on your height and body size, will raise your blood sugar level by 2 to 5 mg / dl... So... A 6 foot tall guy would have a blood sugar level rise of 2 and a little woman would be 5. (I found I am a 3...) So if I eat 30 G of carbs, because right now I'm insulin resistant, I find blood sugar meter reading level will rise a hundred points... (IE if it starts out at a blood sugar reading of 115 eating 30 G of carbs will raise it to 215...) I'm told "barely healthy enough is 180 or less and that over 400 may require a doctors visit... I am slowly losing my weight and insulin resistance so that now 30 G might only raise 60 or 70 points... I made the mistake of thinking that 1 G of sugar will raise blood sugar level by only 1 point... So I "fell off the carb wagon" thinking I was okay... When I really wasn't... Eating 150 G of carbs is going to add (for me) 450 mg/dl of sugar to my blood stream... I have found out, the hard way, that my "high end" amount of blood sugar level will taper off quick enough, but below 180 my body will only shed about 5 points per hour... This is were intermittent fasting works, at least for me... For a while I thought I was safe eating 100g of carbs a day, maybe I was... When I really am at a level of only 30g or less... Sugar free pudding has a crab count of 6G... I'd have thought it was okay to eat 12 of em... Nope... 4 would give me 24G of carbs... So I would think.. Okay... I can eat a quarter pounder and a small fry and drink water, when in reality, I can safely barely eat only a one half bun burger and NO FRIES... So what I do now... I take a carb smart bun that has a net count of 4g (as opposed to the original 40+ g bun...) and replace the wendy's, mcdonald's, or sonic burger bun; and I eat no fries, will drink water or diet soda, and bring some pork rinds or beyond chips as a fry replacement... Recommending 150G of carbs to a sedentary recently overcome insulant resistant is kind of dumb and dangerous. Once your "fixed" you should try and stay under 50g a day; preferably 30g ... Hope this helps for a new video idea or someone reading this. Before I "fell of the wagon" I was a safe 170LB. I ballooned up to 220LB and managed to get some form of edema and was walking like a freakin penguin. Right now, in less than 3 weeks time, I'm back down to 189!!!!!!!! Coming back from the dead... Again...

Dennis, Dr Westman addresses time restricted eating on page 183. Instead of addressing it as a set time of not eating (fasting) he emphasized eating when hungry only. By definition if you follow this one simple rule AND KEEP CARBS UNDER 20 you will naturally follow time restricted eating. It happened to me and I’m happy under 20 so I only get hungry twice a day, approximately 10 am and 2 pm. When you add carbs like your eating plan, I think consciously restricting becomes part of the equation. You also let Mike make your food selections, his book is designed to keep it very simple and available to a larger audience, many non diabetics do not want to stick their fingers. His book is a great primer for very sick people who are sick and tired of being sick and tired and the case histories are encouraging. Your chia seeds are very high in oxalates for those like me who are oxalate poisoned, I am still dumping crystals from all the spinach, almonds, beans and seeds I consumed as a paleo plant based dieter. I needed to swing more carnivore to recover. I love your channel, thank you for teaching me how to use a glucometer!!

Lowering carb intake is first and primary step to lower blood sugar and become healthier. Carb is not an essential macro-nutrient. However, what happens when we eat more calories than we need. Excess calories from any sources (fat, protein and carb alike) converts to fat. Once the fat cells (adipocytes) of the body is full, it spills into blood as Triglycerides and all sorts of metabolic diseases including diabetes appears.

Kudos great information the doctors list of foods would be good for me if the items didn’t contain a lot of sodium. Since I also have issues with high blood pressure and being salt sensitive. I have given up a lot of foods that you suggest like white rice/ potatoes and my numbers have come down.
@nataliajimenez1870

Dr Westman has mentioned doing low-sodium keto for patients that have heart or renal conditions that require them. Many people that do very low carb find that they need to eat more sodium because when insulin is lowered in the body, the body does not retain as much sodium and people may experience symptoms like headaches or muscle pain, and that's corrected when they consume more salt. Everybody is different. You do what works for you. There are many seasonings that don't have any salt added, so you can use those and use fresh meat instead of meat that has been cured with salt

How do you and Benedicta use ground flaxseed and chia seeds? Do you have a video on these seeds?
@beatdiabetes3

I make a chia seed pudding as a lunch or dinner. We use flaxseed in several recipes, most frequently when Ben makes a low carb fufu for me (she prefers Quaker Oats for her fufu, usually). Here is a chia see video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-puImA4cAMHk.html

Sadly Chia seeds make me spike quite a bit. I focus on cauliflower rice as the best alternative.

Theoretically they should not spike glucose, but at times reality trumps theory. Your glucose meter must be the ultimate authority.

@@beatdiabetes3 Agreed. By way of reference the chia seeds are tri-coloured and organic, with 38gms per 50gm serve! Plus no mention of fibre grams. Good old cauliflower!

I have been listening to dr McDougall who say we are starchavoirs and I certainly done understand where he is coming from. I don't know if he uses insulin or not but for a type 2 diabetic starchy foods does not work for me. 2 mushrooms, some repani,a few slices of onion, a sweet potatoe less than 50 grams sends my sugar to 12 very high. I just don't understand this dr

Thanks Dennis! I had kept trying pretzels, 😪 but time after time. That wasn't a good idea! Of course eating half the bag doesn't help either. But before, pretzels had seem so innocent to me. Still like just eating bread though right?!

Dennis, you must know that you can not cut carbs out of your diet because carbs make the Dopamine which is the food that allows our brains to function daily! lf you restrict carbs, you may promote Parkinson disease.!! Parkinson patients are treated with a synthetic form of Dopamine called L-Dopa. So, it is a very difficult decision to make if you restrict carbs & inadvertently induce Parkinson disease l would appreciate your thoughts on this.

I recommend you Dr. Richard Bernstein. He is THE authority in using low-carb for Type 1 Diabetes. He is 89 yrs old and was diagnosed as Type 1 as a kid and was one of the first to use a glucometer at home to control his sugar levels. His book is absolutely the best resource for Type 1 patients

For me it took 90 days. But if you screw up you have to start over. When you eat bad foods it sticks around for a week. Suggest you get a Continuous Glucose Meter. Free style libre 2. Getting to zero carbs is hard, you are hooked on sugar and need to quit.
@GDixon-ch3yl

It takes about a month to see real results but of you keep going you will a vast difference. When and how often is important too. I didn't serious effort keto for the first 90 days and I went from 8.1 to 5.7.
@buckturgidson1448
@buckturgidson1448 2 года назад
You’ll see a difference in just a few days. Of course it will take longer to make a really meaningful change. Dedication and diligence are the keys. In 4-1/2 months, I lost 70 pounds and my A1c went from 6.8 to 4.6 by doing strict carnivore and (mostly) one meal per day. This approach is not for everyone but it’s been life changing for me. The important thing is to find a plan that fits your life and then *stick with it.* The results will come. Good luck to you.

Depends on how severe the case. For most of us, low carb with LC veggies works beautifully.
