Please follow me on a short, but busy flight from KDXR to KHPN in the New York metropolitan area. Procedures in the cockpit are shown with special emphasis on checklist use and workload management during single pilot operation. ATC is recorded.
Your comments are always very welcome.
Enjoy!
Happy Landings,
Guido

Thank you very much! Props were at 96% on landing. If you need some reverse, you put the props to 100% (full forward) after touch down. That's what I did. We avoid 100% on landing mainly because of passenger comfort - noise. However, you have to be aware that you need to put the props forward for full reverse and for a go-around. The B100 allows to land with 96%. If the book says 100% on landing for any other aircraft, you have to adhere to this. Thanks for watching my videos! Regards, Guido

Well spotted Leandro! The Garrett engines on the B100 need top have "flat" propellers on shut down and for start. If I would shut down like a PT6 engine, they would go into feather. Then I would not be able to start them again, because turbine and propeller are on one single shaft and all rotates at the same time. What we do is to put them into reverse on shot down and at around 25% N1 back to ground idle. This ensures that mechanical stops click into the propeller and keep them flat.

You are absolutely right! Although it sounds impossible, it happens many times. I know of a guy in a Beechcraft Baron who did this. Special is here that the Barons had 2 cockpit setups: the older model with the levers for the flaps on the left side and for the gear on the right side. This almost calls for trouble. Happy Landings, Guido

Love the 100 series. The only KA with Garrett engines. Much more reliable, longer time between service/maintenance and lower fuel burn with more power. A facility I know of has a 100 and swapped out the dash-10 engines for Dash-67’s. Takes high cruise to 350-360 kts from 330 kts.
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 4 года назад
Hi Dan, that might be a mix up with the King Air types. Hi speed cruise in a B100 was 270KTAS under best conditions. Happy Landings,, Guido
@calvinnickel9995
@calvinnickel9995 4 года назад
We run PT6s 5000 hours. As long as any Garrett. Hot sections are done on wing in one night very easily. Fuel efficiency? Who cares? Fuel is cheap. Reliability? What’s the only engine certified for single engine commercial IFR operations? Not the Garrett. No King Air does 360 knots, period. Even a Blackhawk King Air 350 will not because it’s redlined at Mach .58. Only very high ISA deviation will make Mmo fast enough and at the same time it will rob your engine of the power to fly that fast.
@MrMKH2010

@bobgetsy3135

Capt. Warnecke I noticed on one of your King Air 100 videos you started the engines without a ground power unit. Do the batteries have enough power to do this a lot? Your vids are very informative. I started training to be a pilot years ago but after 1st couple of classes I found out I had a neurological condition which prevented me from continuing. Watching your videos are like putting me in the cockpit with you. thank you very much.
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 10 лет назад
Thank you Bob! Propeller turbines need a lot of electrical power to get started, this can be in the range of 7-10% of the rated power. The turbine of a B100 has 715HP, so your starter motor needs 70HP! The batteries are not much bigger than your car battery, around 40Ah. After one engine start, the battery is already discharged a lot. Before we start the second engine, we re-charge the battery with with generator of the running engine. For obvious reasons we use a ground power unit whenever available. Happy Landings, Guido

Mr. Warnecke, quick question. Is it ok to read aircraft manuals that are out dated?? Example, an aircraft manual on the King Air 200 from 2005. Is the 2014 or 2015 manual that much diffrent? Still waiting for a new video! Hope to see one soon. be safe sir!
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 9 лет назад
ricardo guajardo Hi Ricardo, it depends on the aircraft you fly. For general study purposes, you can read any B200 manual. If you want to fly a specific aircraft, you should read the SPECIFIC manual for that aircraft. While 99% of the B200's are identical, there are some changes over the years that need to be considered. Happy Landings, Guido

I do not know the A20. The A10 is very good and if you do not need features like bluetooth, I would go for an A10. Buy it used on ebay and get new ear cushions and mike covers. Its like new then for may be 40% of the price. Happy Landings! Guido

What prop setting do you taxi with shortly after landing? Around 1745 mins you pull the prop levers back to what seems to almost feather position?
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 9 лет назад
Hi Peter, these are Garrett (single shaft) turbines, so quite different from the usual P&W PT6 (free turbine) engines installed in King Airs. The entire engine is rotating on one shaft: propeller-reduction gear-compressor-turbine. To assure enough air flow through the engine 9 to prevent overheat) the engine always must run at a minimum speed. We have 2 settings: 1) flight: between 96% and 101% 2) ground: around 65% For cool down purposes before shut down, the engine has to run minimum 3 minutes. The clock starts ticking once the propellers are on ground RPM. This is why I pulled back on the propeller levers. On short runways this is not advised s you can achieve reverse thrust only at full RPM. If the propellers are not fully forward before landing (max RPM) a light illuminates "REVERSE NOT READY". Happy Landings, Guido

Do you ever use Flaps for take off on the B100 ?
@GuidoWarnecke

Hi Jose, I use flap only on every short runways. You take off distance is shortened a bit. Disadvantage: in case of an engine failure, the single engine climb performance is reduced. Happy Landings, Capt. Guido

Mr. Warnecke, I fly an Aerostar 601P for a company now and I am flying up next week to test fly a B100-10 for purchase. Have you had good luck with the Garrett engines?
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 9 лет назад
Hi Wayne, Garrett are great engines, especially the -10. They require more attention by the pilot. The start process is very different from a P&W. If you have not flown the "normal" King Air's, it is actually better. If you need more info, email me anytime, address at end of video. Happy Landings, Guido

Within about 30 seconds from wheels off I heard you say EGT temp was reached so you brought the power back a bit. This is at about 9:00 or so. Is that unusual? Was it a hot day, or you probably don't remember this particular day. I'm just wondering why the EGT temp limit was reached so soon. Is that normal?
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 10 лет назад
David, the engines produce rated power (715HP) only at standard temperature (15 deg Celsius) at sea level. If it is warmer (I believe this was in summer, short sleeve shirt...), you have to reduce power to keep the EGT in limits. And just live with the reduced power available. In winter it is the other way around: you may over torque the engine! Some modern jet engines have an electronic system (FADEC) that controls all that: you push the throttle levers into "take off" position and the computer takes care of all. Not in these Garrett engines built in the 80's... The take off distance tables make reference to temperature and elevation. Happy landings, Guido

Hi Guido, Do you know if there still exist the so-called 'Safety Pilots', or 'Pilot Assistant's' for Single Pilot certified aircraft today ? I have a PPL and have heard that a lot of Bizjet companies (especially in the UK) throw in a Safety Pilot for their airplanes with Single Pilot certification, who does not have any responsibility (like a FO) but who accompanies and assists the PF/PIC on aircrafts like the PC12, TBM, and like your King Air. As I want to attend university in the UK next Fall this would be a beautiful way for me to continue to go flying, even though I can't log any hours or receive any money. However I can continue to live my passion, gain experience and fly in the cockpit of a King Air or Citation Mustang, which is a dream of any PPL holder used to fly old C172's ;-) What do you think ?
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 10 лет назад
I am nit sure what the situation is in the USA is. As a matter of fact, many insurance companies requires from low time pilots some hours (typically 25h) SOE Supervised Operational Experience. I do not know what the required qualifications are, this needs to be negotiated with the insurance company. If this works out for your - great! All the best & happy landings, Guido
@mertert07
@mertert07 10 лет назад
Hi Guido, Thank you for the clarification. I will continue to build up some hours (I have 120h per now TT) and then try my luck and ask some operators in the UK to go fly with them as safety pilot. Who knows, maybe I will sit one day in a King Air like you do fly ! That would be awesome ! Grüße aus Luxembourg, Christian !
