Murder of the Universe might be King Gizzard's most musically and conceptually ambitious project to date, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired.

This is personally one of your reviews with which I can disagree the most with MY OPINION on what you said. I just felt the album was a great experience in general, and I think the narrative and the form it was told was quite compelling. I can see your point and respect your opinion, but I mostly feel this is King Gizzards's most mature project, even if it does not have the same replayability as others.
@kaneda7368
@kaneda7368 7 лет назад
Oscar Avila I agree with what you say, since I really like this album. But it's important to note that the spoken word was managed way better in eyes like the sky, and they could've used that as a reference to make this album. Eyes like the sky's music alone let me know what was happening in the scene in this pretend old western movie, I didn't really need the narration all the time, and when it did come, the music came down with it, both supporting themselves. I think the story telling from this point of view is shown the best in the second chapter of murder of the universe. I love chapter 1 and 3, but if you look at musical story telling from the perspective I'm looking at, chapter 2 is superior.
@poppatang4216
@poppatang4216 7 лет назад
It definitely does not have the replayability as other Gizz albums, but goddam is it an experience to listen to. I agree its a rather mature project. During my first couple play-throughs of the album I couldn't get over how long some parts seemed to stretch out - I think I was just too hype for new Gizz and wanted heat after heat. But by about the 5th time I could really feel how the narrative drove the album, and how many of the words were seemingly meticulously picked to create all the imagery and feelings needed to create this story.
@100nujabes
@100nujabes 6 лет назад
Spicy Cheddar MOTU isn't my fave album at all. Prob in the lower half of my list (not that low) but it sure is an experience and has it's time and place. This album possesses both very high moments and very low. High being Altered Beast 4 (polyrhythmic orgy), Acrid Corpse (just love how that part is composed), and especially Lord of Lightning (predator plays w prey then finally goes for the kill with a million bear claws and 1000 kicks to the nuts at :40). Low being spoken word and Vomit Coffin. Not saying those parts were bad but anyone couldve really made Vomit Coffin with how simple it is. Gizz isn't known for simplicity and I expect some earthquaky, sky ripping instrumentals and concepts therefore, I am unsatisfied with that track. Spoken word couldve been much better. Maybe shorten them and definitely mix the woman's vocals and instruments better. Turn the instruments down to act as a pedestal for the woman's voice.

Such an old review; and imo it grew old fast. I've just discovered them and am going through their back catalog. Favorites come and go like waves on a beach. Sometimes I just let The Algorithm choose the next track for me. To rank them in some sort of order? How? What order? The order you might like them? The order on the trippy hippy/metal/electronica scale? The order of how good the bass is? How good the album is live? How good the album is in good headphones, lying on your bed in the dark with the windows open and a storm coming?

I just came back revisiting this as I'm rellistening to gizzard getting ready for some new potential music and I see what you mean. I remember him complains about the spoken word stuff and agreeing for a lot of it when it first came out. It's hard to follow the stories told when your trying to listen to the music and the monotone nature on Han Tumiy or whatever his name is, but there's a lot more to say about the instruments driving and twisting through the album mimicking and enhancing the stories told then Anthony explores but in saying here interesting isn't it...

I want to say this: This is my opinion and I really enjoy the band so it's a little biased. I think Anthony did a fine job with this review but I want to correct most of what he said by saying that this was INTENDED to be a NARRATIVE album. The fact we got any actual music is pretty lucky. I would say this is an improvement comparing it to eyes like the sky which was an audiobook and contained no lyrics other than the written story. I also COMPLETELY disagree with the idea that the narrative wasn't mixed well. Not only were the songs written around the idea that there would be narration but none of the narrative bits talked over anything important nor are they in any more distracting than actual lyrics. My conclusion is that the album is certainly more of an active listen than something you can just throw in the background. So I recommend it, its perfectly listenable, but be warned that you have to indulge in it a little bit. Thank you

Yeah, Eyes Like The Sky was good, but it didn't have much of a want for me to re-experience the story. Ok, here's what I take issue with, it ain't an album as we know it, spoken word is clearly the main thing in this album and the instrumental passages and lyrics are to help punctuate it, you can't honestly say that murder of the universe (the song) would have better without the spoken word or with lyrics, because guess what, it's insane ramblings of a mad robot as he's slaughtering innocent people, the music adds to the story representing the world and the people in it, not the spoken word representing the music
@dreuzz
@dreuzz 7 лет назад
Did you actually listen to the spoken word passages? They hold deep meanings about the whole setting of the album. I agree with you about listening to the album as a whole, the spoken word is def. overwhelming. But I think it is super important to look at this album as a whole collection of poetry, which paints a horrific grim sci-fi apocalypse scenario. This goes well with the band making "themed" albums - one is full acoustic, another microtonal, Quarters was shaped in quarters etc. I enjoy and love it, but I don't listen to it from start to end that often. Glad and impressed more albums are coming this year.

James Robinson Bad memory, my mistake. Everyone was giving that album praise when it came out, it was all over the radio, in the commercials, they even won a few awards (a Brit award I think) in England. A bunch of popular and influential rock musicians from Dave Grohl to Jimmy Page kept saying it's their favourite new rock band and how they bring hope for rock'n'roll and all that shit. Then all of a sudden I see my favourite melon giving it a 5/10 and I can't help but to think that he did it just to seem smarter and cooler than everyone else at that time. It's like he listened to the album and said to himself: "Nope, I'm gonna be the first person to shit on this band!". I'm saying it just didn't seem like an honest review. That's what I meant by biased.

Me and my brother listened to this album on a sleepy twelve hour drive back home from the coast. When the fog is rolling onto the dark highway from the wall of trees on either side, and the guitars shriek like a frenzied swarm of bats, this album produces an experience like none other. This was the one and only time an album made me feel like I do when I watch a horror movie, that same satisfying fear. I dig the spoken word, it immersed me in the altered world KG set out to paint with Murder of the Universe. Not a ten out of ten but hot damn, I think this is my hardest disagree with Fantano. Still love you melon

I actually really liked the album and have been jamming to it ever since it came out. I contrary to a lot of others, really like the spoken passages. It gives the album kind of a D&D feel to it. It makes the album really fun. That's always something I really liked about King Gizzard. They're more than anything, a really fun band that take a ton of risks, even if they might get a lot of backlash like they did here. The way I see it, is that this is the way they meant for this album to be experienced, and that the musical part of the album will be more realized through their live performances.

Yeah I love this record, I don't know. For me, the entire Han-Tyumi section works incredibly well and feels cohesive. Lord of Lightning/Balrog is a bit out of place next to it, but also great. Could it have been better if they were on a more forgiving schedule? Probably. But there is still so much on here that I like.

Man, I don't mind the spoken word passages at all! It did take me a few listens to get into the jarring nature of them, but overall, I think the narration and the robot voice on part 3 just add to the colder, harsher vibe instead of taking away from it like I originally thought it did. Maybe you won't change your mind in the long run, but give this album more time. It will grow on you Fantano!

it could be because he's busy, but I have a feeling that he really didn't like it and is not bothering to review it lol. i know he's not a fan of Nick's voice and he gave MIFLSA a 6. This album is definitely more synthy, kinda like Currents and 'Colder than Ice' sounds like it could have been taken right out of Glamorous Damage. I like the first 4 songs a lot, but Edge of the World 1., tbh., just feels like they ripped off Siberian Breaks.
@domsyadams358
@domsyadams358 7 лет назад
+Annika N. I can feel a little bit of Siberian breaks in it but not too much. I think the Weather is by far their most mature and cohesive sounding release. And yes there's some similarities to Currents, but that's only cause Kevin Parker produced it. The Pond sound is still on the album, albeit a little more refined

I like this one. I just think it should have been on double vinyl. The version I have just fades out in the middle of a song and fades back in on the other side.

Saw them live couple of days ago, it was a blast. The lack of narration on the live set, and due to the fact that them boys are a tour de force, is a cause to go out and see them on stage, :D I feel you.

Yeah I kinda gotta agree. I think its fitting that you hardly mentioned the sound of the instrumentation or the guitars at all because personally I don't remember at a lot the musical moments from this album at all, besides Lord of Lightning perhaps. The spoken word just completely dominates the landscape. But I suppose the point of this record is the spoken word passages, I did think they were well-written and interesting, and obviously the band wants us to focus on the story being told through those passages. Its an interesting record for what it is, but its definitely not as fun to listen to as Nonagon Infinity. I'm looking forward to the next release from them, maybe we'll get to hear more of this heavy instrumental sound without any distractions, because for the most part I did like the blur of guitars and synths that they used on this record.

Really loving this album, probably my favourite album I’ve heard from them. I’m loving the heavier tones and the spoken word narrative. Microtonal bananas has a few good songs but the album as a whole isn’t as strong, Polygon has amazing moments but all blurs together a bit too much for me to tell the songs apart except for the opening crumbling castles. This album fits together nicely into a story, while still having amazingly heavy songs that can stand in their own. I’ve always been a huge fan of concept albums and rock operas, so this is right up my alley.

No comment about if you play Nonagon Infinity after listened to the album, the albums conects with one another, like the track "Robot Stop" is talking about "Soy Protein Munt Machine" and the parts " My coffin's all I see, Lately, Robot stop " and another part of Nonagon that says " I climb up the stalk and plant the beam, the universe is a machine, that has awoken from a dream, the universe is a machine..." anyways I just wanted to add some curiosities.
