@@masterofdisguise9564 DAMN is VERY conceptual. I wish more people realized that. Playing it front to back tells the story of a rapper who ends up finding salvation, turning pride into being humble, going from lust to love, going from Blood (violence) to DNA (symbolism of being civilized), turning from fear to God, until realizing himself on Duckworth. Playing the album backwards tells the story of a rapper who falls into a downward spiral, going from God to fear, from love to lust, from being humble to pride, from DNA to Blood. This isn’t just a fan theory, on BLOOD. Kendrick says “Is it wickedness? Is it weakness? **You decide**, do we live or do we die?” It’s a very strong concept album, which is something Fantano STRONGLY missed (which he rarely does, it was surprising he let that happen with someone like Kendrick). Each track has its share of quotables, lots of banger instrumentals. It’s a strong ass 9 imo, and easily the best hip hop album of 2017

Honestly, I still can't believe this album, even after almost a week. I see it as something of a climax for the band's discography. Everything's been leading up to this point, and now the band is ready for new things. I think that had this record come out in the 70s, it would be considered an absolute classic in its genre. 10/10 in my book.

Look at the cover of the album. Inner Cell, Loyalty, Horology = Horology I, Horology II, Horology III Horology ends with the main character telling his story to a traveler, who then becomes the protagonist of the next 3 songs. He explains his fascination with Tetrachromacy in the 1st song, then searches for it in Searching..., then has found it in The Fourth Color. These 6 songs are so strong imo that it brings the album to a light to decent 8.
@HAWKEYESOLO
@HAWKEYESOLO 4 года назад
I agree, except Loyalty and Inner Cell seems to be in a story of their own. I would think that Inner Cell is kind of foreshadowing. But Horology and onwards are definitley connected.
@HMan2828
@HMan2828 4 года назад
@@HAWKEYESOLO With how it fits into the gizzverse, pretty sure the protagonist of the album here is someone looking for an advantage to get rid of Han-Tyumi, who by this point rules the gizzverse like a despot. He is looking for tetrachromacy as a superpower to defeat the robot god. I think Inner Cell and Loyalty is a vignette into what the robot is thinking about at that point in the album. The two songs clearly go together, but not so much with the rest of the album. Album ends with the protagonist having acquired tetrachromacy (presumably something like night vision?), and I guess the next part of the story is pending...

This album is a masterpiece. All 10 songs are beautifully crafted, IMO. It's less 4-on-the-floor rock and far more intricate than their previous stuff. You say it has less energy, but there is far more thought about the composition of these songs... The intricate layers really shine the more plays you give it. I think it's their best album. The blending of unusual time signatures, Stu's melodies and phrasing, some more interesting percussive work from the drummers this time, the woodwinds (so beautiful), a hint of Mike Oldfield creeping through at times... But I do miss Han-Tyumi! :) I've been listening to it on repeat 6 hours a day for the past 3 days... I love it

Partly its their signature, but a lot of themes (especially some riffs from other albums played in some of their newer albums) in their music is consistent through all their albums in one form or another, or tropes that they've come accustomed to. Regardless, Polygon is a breath of fresh air in its own merit, and its definitely a 7-8 in my books, but its one of those albums that are in the vein of "album" rather than dissecting singles like FMB, PMDB, IIYMF, Odd, FAFYL, 12BB, etc etc etc.

If you listen to Murder of the Universe a few times you'll realize that the intention of the album is to be a garage rock opera. The narrative is the throughline. I'm convinced that Anthony and others dislike this key aspect of the album because it isn't standard format; It hasn't been done like that before. So, the question is, does the spoken word add or subtract from the music. My opinion, it adds and gels perfectly with the tracks, even the text to speach narrative of Han Tyumi.

Ok... so, i've been listening to this one a lot... and as usual, i do think is an instant classic. Beyond the beautiful and well executed "entanglement" provoked (or evoked...) by the use of polyrythm there are the lyrics and the story that is dense just as the music is and it's good enough to be considered literature. After some thought, I did my own interpretation. There are four chapters in this album (each represents a colour perhaps?).The first chapter begins with Inner Cell in which the citizens of an arcane city are planning a rebellion against their "God-King"... then by Loyalty we switch into the perspective of this entity and the fight that ensues. Now in Horology it's a bit more complex... the first verse speaks of how this entity came to being... then we get a third person narrative where we are told about the plot (Inner Cell) being crushed (Loyalty) and how there is a survivor without eyes that arrives to the "castle walls"... That's chapter one. Chapter two. Tetrachromacy is the story of the survivor, who, living within the castle walls learns about the ability to see the unseen (a fourth dimension within the third)... an ancient obtainable magic knowledge thingy. Then in Searching it's a first person narrative from the point of view of the eyeless survivor searching perception in life when then comes the revelation (or the application via procedure?) and then he "becomes God". The Fourth Colour is all about ascension and to transcend... The chapter three is the whole bulk of Crumbling Castle in which we see this God (or rather the God sees its people) fall in the besiege of his Castle ("castle walls"... Horology...). In the song, the now Godlike references other chapters "you would not believe where I'm from..." (fourth chapter, Polygondwaland) or the lines "we have even said our last rites", "are we safe in our holding CELL" (chapter one, the God-King worship-rebellion). Anyway Crumbling Castle references everything in a thousand year cycle because the Godlike knows and that's why is the longest song... it's pieced together. The fourth and final chapter is the thriad of songs that make the Polygondwanaland story. In here the survivor(s) (and possibly the Godlike because they needed someone to see this secret land "Grand and never been/Seen by man, veil of a dream") set out to find a new land... dreaming of it upon arriving they recognize this place as a very ancient land "full of dinosaurs" in which they founded (or found) an ancient civilization that is ruled by "a God-King" who becomes an evil god... soooo, then back to Chapter one. This is at least how I made sense of this album haha. "On this very day, in one thousand years The earth will be relative to the sun and the moon And a new world will be created I know because it is written here" Crumbling Castle in Verse 7... man these guys know how to build epic mythologies!!

Hey Mythony Mantano, why no mention of polyrhythms in an album that's built on them just like Flying Microtonal Banana was on microtones? The 'story' structure of the album is more along the lines of: Crumbling Castle Polygondwanaland+The Castle In The Air+Deserted Dunes Welcome Weary Feet Inner Cell+Loyalty+Horology Tetrachromacy+Searching...+The Fourth Colour Each of the songs in these sections share elements with the others in their section. This could potentially make the album click a bit more for you with these ideas in mind. But hey at least it wasn't a 4/10!

I'm coming back to Polygondwanaland after a couple of years and wanted to say it's a grower. I'd rank it within Top 5 KGLW, with Nonagon Infinity, Flying Microtonal Banana, Ice/Death and Mind Fuzz. It's just that good. (In fact if these 5 albums were their entire discog I don't think their reputation would change much...)

What about the well-balanced complexity, the overwelming technical skills of the musicians and the overall musicality of the band on this record? Not to forget the fact that this record conceptually combines the previous three albums in an astonishilngly homogeneous way.

Good review, a little sad though that you didn't mention anything about how they are releasing the album as well as the rights to distribute the album for free, potentially bolstering indie or homemade record labels. It has no effect on the actual album, sure, but it's a really neat idea for the music industry.
