I've just acquired one of these - exact same model, Heritage 84. It's a solid piece of engineering, to say the least! They certainly don't make 'em like that any more!

That looked like it was a very fiddly cleaner to dismantle & put back together Dorian. But it was clearly well worth it once it had been completed. It looks lovely now. :-)

I've got a Kirby Heritage 84 myself, serial number 2840304801, which means: 2 = final assembly at Kirby West in Andrews, TX 84 = calendar year 1984 03 = calendar month March 04801 = production sequence

No wonder they cost so much. Absolute PITA to dismantle & reassembly. They are also heavy & hard on belt drives.

0 seconds ago Would have any ideas about why my 1984 Heritage II won’t turn on? just the orange light turns on when I press the Power button. You mention a Safety switch on the front of the body/power head, is there a way to check that it is the problem? Thank you so much for any ideas.

I know some have two safety switches, one on the head and one on the Emptor, when the emptor is locked in position a part of it flicks a switch on the side so you can’t use it when the emptor isn’t fitted.

I have actually never taken off the piggy bank on my kirby and i found a pound coin :) but its a shame it is no longer legal tender

Those "piggy bank" rear handle covers were notorious for having cracked cord hooks. Those cord hooks allow you to keep the cord out of the way when the handle is lowered for cleaning under tables and other certain pieces of furniture.

How did you clean the inside of the bag?

I removed it from the emptor, it’s held in by a very thick tight elastic of some sort, turned it inside out and washed it by hand.

I have two old Kirbys and I'm not to keen on using them, because I'm always wondering how big of a risk it is to get an electric shock from those all metal machines, in case something is not properly assembled.

+KischteBier Hi there, I was the same when I first got them, well, I’m a bit weary with all the second hand vacs I buy 😂😂😂, but after learning a bit about them and taking them apart and checking them, I feel a little bit confident, but still always weary.

Some others feel the same way about a Kirby that was never taken out of its box all those years ago! They fear the overall value of the machine will diminish after the box is opened.
