KISS - DESTROYER Album Review! 

I agree about Great Expectations! I can’t believe the hate this song gets. It’s different, creative, well written, great arrangement and has great instrumental performance.

As a young 14 year old who just lost his dad.. this album saved me somehow from that low point in my life. It was my first encounter with Kiss and I sure got hooked from then on. It lifted my spirits . gene really spoke to my heart on "Great Expectations". I wanted so much to escape with KISS as thIs song conveyed to me. I studied the album cover relentlessly .Most people hated KISS then and picked on my taste for them. I couldn't care less.

It's crazy, I never get tired of Shout it out Loud...it is that good of a song. I usually get tired of anthems like Rock and Roll Night, I , or Raise your Glasses, but Shout it out Loud has so much packed into it. Like Ezrin's idea of adding piano to the guitar chords to fatten the sound in the chorus...pure genius.

I have Alive II's version of God Of Thunder as my ring tone on my phone, the kids on the album are producer Bob Ezrin's kids they're also on Alice Cooper's School's Out at the end of the song as well

I feel that ALIVE is what really pushed them up to the next level, and that gave the label the confidence in them to spend more money on their albums, give them better producers, and let them push the envelope a little, experiment with their music. My favorite song was the Ace song, Flaming Youth, and wish Ace had sung it. It's fascinating that Paul sang this song, and Peter didn't bully them all into giving up songs for him to sing. I've read that he was PISSED that all he got was Beth, and was planning on leaving, but since Beth was their first top ten hit, he decided to stay, because Beth gave him power. God of Thunder is a Gene song, and the best thing Ezrin did was force them to slow it down, make it dark, and let Gene sing it, and I think Paul would agree with that...

When I read CK Lent's book Kiss and sell I was surprised to read the initial response to destroyer from the established fans myself.... Destroyer was a master piece. Ezrin personified them.... He took them to new lyrical and musical levels which I'm not sure they would have done on their own at that time. Great Expectations is an awesome song... The intro melody on guitar is actually a Beethoven piece! Not sure if you knew that or not. Alive was my first album....like you I saved up my allowance and mom took me to Kmart to purchase it. Destroyer was my first studio album. Just like the infamous cereal box on Saturday mornings, the destroyer album cover captivated me while I was listening to it. 🙂

I feel most people currently like to bash this album nowadays. Not me! I will say it’s not an Ace album. U don’t hear those signature licks which sucks, but it’s a different album. 4 5stars- DRC, god of thunder, flamin’ youth and SIOL! 1 2star great expectations.

Another fun and entertaining review. Again, I find myself agreeing with your perspective more often than not. I had a similar retroactive experience in that my first album was Destroyer, somewhere around 6 or 7 years old; so that was 'my' KISS. It wasn't until years later that I went back and discovered the previous albums. . My favorite observation: the "trilogy/ set of three". This is also something I've thought about - often - but have never gotten much traction in breaching a robust conversation, even with other fellow KISS fans/ friends; of which are very few and far between. To this I will assert, there are two types of people in the world a) those that love KISS and b) those that love KISS but pretend to hate them. I mean, yes Papa Gene is a complete tool. But still, ya gotta love KISS despite his buffoonery. . P.S. I "lost" your channel for a while, I kept thinking the name was Rock and Roll Reverie. I remembered to book mark and set the notification bell this time. . Keep the vids coming!

Destroyer is my #2 Kiss album too, but only because Creatures of the Night is a bit better, for me. It's like listening to Heaven and Hell by Black Sabbath...near flawless. I never skip a track. Destroyer put Kiss on another level...No doubt. Creatures though, was Kiss proving they're still relevant after everyone wrote them off. Smashes, Thrashes and Hits was the first Kiss album I ever owned, but Destroyer was my close second a week or so later.

I’m like you. I heard Alive 2 before anything. So I was instantly a fan of the second three albums first. I got Alive 2 when I was ten. Then got Rock N Roll over and then Destroyer. Hardly knew the first three existed. Then I saw Dressed to Kill in the store and it just opened up a whole new world. Before long I got Hotter than Hell and the debut. Then Alive. So I was introduced backward. Still remember though seeming Dressed to Kill and thinking ITS A NEW KISS ALBUM.

I love seven of the nine songs on Destroyer , the only two I'm not crazy about are Flaming Youth and Sweet Pain. It's my 4th favourite KISS album.

my favorite kiss albums is destroyer rock and roll over kiss alive 2 love gun crazy nights revenge kiss alive 3 kiss alive.my favorite kiss album out of all of them is kiss love gun because everybody was singing on that album.and they were the number 1 band in the usa.but i still say they are one of the best bands in the history of rock and roll.kiss was really great in 1977.but they were great again in the 1990s.concerts sold out again just like in the 1970s.but i still say they made the most money in 1977.even though kiss and star wars made the most money in the 20th century.

My favorite KISS album... Revenge is my second favorite...

Great video, I agree with almost everything that you said. My first album was Destroyer, I may have heard Alive first. The album is excellent, the image is so iconic, I had the Amt model kiss van, the puzzle, and a sleeping bag, all with the image, it’s just that good. Love gun is a iconic cover too, Destroyer was just first. Thanks again, the videos are great. I enjoyed your reviews i was nine when i got alive for Christmas. That was when the band was at their peak. It wasn’t Kiss after that, the first 3 albums where written by kiss. They brought in songwriters in destroyer and replaced ace on some tracks, later peter was replaced on drums around dynasty. He played great on the first album, what a groove Also destroyer is over compressed, like oasis, it irritates the ears with more then one listening Everyone complains about the first three albums being badly produced. I disagree, I like the sound the band sounds honest and pure especially their first album. Kiss lost all spontaneity after alive.

I think it's hard to nail down which exactly is KISS's best album. I chop and change between Dynasty and Destroyer. After more consideration I think I would give the nod to Destroyer , just !!! There's only one song on the album I don't care for and that's Flaming Youth. I've always liked Great Expectations , it's different but it's great.

Btw. as for your question: I remember, my first Kiss Record was Dynasty. I must have been maybe 18 years old and after vocational school sometimes I used to go to a store and look for Music. I was a Heavy Metal Fan for a while already and started to listen to Rock Stuff too. From Kiss there was Destroyer, Dynasty and Sonic Boom. I got Dynasty because I already new I was made for Loving me...because that one was their biggest hit in Europe. Also got Trash vom Alice Cooper on that Day.

I had no idea King of the Night Time world was a cover.

I love this album. Its got a few bad tracks. But DTR and GOT and KOTNTW are brilliant.

Thoughts on this original, vs Resurrected? I'm sticking with original.
