Khukuri Making Process | Knife Making-Forging an Authentic Kukri knife
Product link : www.thegurkhakhukuri.com/prod...
The art of Khukuri making has been passed down generations to generations. A very talented groups of people known called Bishokarma or Kamis have been making Khukuris for centuries and renowned for making of best khukuri in Nepal. Their excellent craftsmanship has been passed down from their ancestors for a long time. It is one of the oldest and famous craftsmanship among the Kamis. Till this date more than 15000 Kamis have been known to be involved in Khukuri making. One of the famous places for Khukuri manufacture in Nepal is Dharn located at the eastern region of Nepal.
The steps involved in Khukuri Making:
1. Weighing :
The first process of Khukuri making is to get Surplus Steel, which in case of Nepal is imported from India. It is then taken to the factory located in Sunam Marga, Dharan. The steels are examined for punctures and cracks; after they pass the initial examination they are then transferred to the weighing room to measure the weight. The initial weight of the steel is supposed to bigger than the final since there is remarkable weight loss during the Khukuri making process.
2. Hammering the steel:
After the Steel has been checked for defects they are then transferred to a hot oven where they are heated and then hammered until the steel resembles shape similar to that of a Khukuri.
3. Shaping the Khukuri :
The typical shape of Khukuri is attained in this step where a small hammer is use to pound the steel until the Khukuri has its form.
Testing the strength of the blades: Using the locally manufactured home made chemicals the hardness of blades are measures, also the blades are subjected to hammering to test the strength.
4. Making the handle :
The handle of Khukuri is made up of buffalo bone or hardwood, Rosewood, Bones and even metals. They can also be custom designed as per the wish of the buyers.
5. Polishing the Khukuri :
The Khukuris are subjected to polishing which will make the blades smooth and Shiny
Making of the Scabbard : The scabbard are made up of wood and leather
Final touch : Here the Khukuris are evaluated and re-polished if anything has been left behind.

In my youth I only carried two large knives for camping, a Kukri and a Kabar. The Kabar usually remained in its Navy scabbard, because the Kukri was used for everything from wood-splitting, sparking a ferro rod, building camp, and food prep. I have nothing but respect for its design and the craftmen who continue to produce them.

I used to fly C-17 Globemasters, for the U.S. Air Force. On one of my trips, to Nepal, back in 2004, your guys met us at our plane and I bought twenty of your knives, These are THE BEST Khukuri knives I have ever had....bar none! One of them I use for debarking trees for woodworking, since I don't have a draw knife. Another I use for hunting, skinning, cleaning and butchering wild game! Neither of the knives ever loses their edges! Grade "A" craftsmanship! If ever I'm back in Nepal, I will buy more! Thanks guys and keep up the great work!

Depends on what you mean by "authentic". If you think blacksmiths didn't source good steel to hammer on, then I'm not sure what you think they did because they sure didn't mine it themselves. As for grinders or drills, it's doing much the same work as a hand file or drill but faster. I take flintlock building courses from professional builders and one thing comes up a lot: "If the old boys had the technology we do, they would have used it". After all, they were paid by the piece, not how much they sweat doing it. That being said, I can appreciate things doing more traditionally AKA, "the hard way" but modern tools and modern steels are leagues better than what the old days had to offer. So that being said, as long as the blades coming out are of traditional form and function, I'm not sure what else you would want. Especially the steel. My god, modern 5160 compared to steel made over 100 years ago?

Some years ago, I purchases a Kukri, called the Kukri Cowboy, its almost a short sword. I was at the time working as a Ranch hand in Wyoming, so it was just the ticket. Very well made and even though it is rather heavy. I let the weight do the work, while I guide the blade where I want it to go. I still carry it to this day, when I go out hiking and camping. But I wear it on a sling system, since it is way to heavy to wear on a belt. And yes, it came directly from Nepal. So the money I spent on said Kukri, stayed in Nepal. I was glad to help.

as with knives from all over the world, you can see the difference between tools made for use and pieces made for show and to impress others. A Kukri is a good, general purpose chopping knife, the shape of the blade makes it good for tasks as varied as chopping firewood and slicing cloth. The hand guard and pommel are sometimes shaped like 2 discs which keep your wrist at a good angle for cutting - although this is more common when it is intended for use as a weapon, many swords from the region use a similar design. Kukris used as general purpose tools have a more practical handle of the type you'd see on a machete. What I'm seeing made here looks like a high quality handmade tool, not something made to hang on a tourist's wall. despite the questionable teapot quench...

Black buffalo horn is a good material to work with. The Japanese make personal name seals out of it. I was so impressed that I decided to have one custom-made for me! amazing to see the use of such historic media as 5160 tool steel from truck springs and the ancient 4" angle grinder. Coupled with the circus trick of cutting annealed wire . A feel good story for the uninitiated, not being smug, just after 20 years of making knives the proper way I find it a bit amusing.
