This is the clearest and most helpful knitting video I have watched. Much better than the ones where people are trying to become popular personalities, and go on about their aunt's cousin's friend's Chihuahua.
Lol, I do throw in a grandchild's name every so often, but I am definitely mum on my aunt's cousin's friend's Chihuahua! Thanks so much for the great feedback, Lynda! ❤️
Hi Suzanne, THANK YOU for one of the best tutorials for closing the gap for the thumb gussets. I don't know why knitters, including myself, always seem to have issues with this. Love the camera-work and your thorough instructions and knitting skills. A big THANK YOU for not rushing through this technique. Last, but not least, your voice is very calm and soothing and a pleasure to listen to while learning this technique
Thank you CW. I work really hard to make crystal clear videos. That is what I look for in the videos that I watch, and I find it lacking in many. So I really concentrate on speaking clearly and going slow. Thank you for the feedback, it makes making my videos worth while. Happy knitting.
One of the most useful videos on youtube. i keep coming back to it and make all my thumb gussets in this way. Thankyou for giving great detailed lessons Suzanne. much appreciated.
Thank you, Suzanne, for your many knitting tutorials. Love your tutorials b/c they are 'uncluttered', free of obnoxious music, chatter over-load, clear, concise, and beautiful visuals. I learned toe up sock knitting from you and now thinking about a pair of mittens, I always know where to come to for expert knitting tips. Thanks again for time and effort you put into all your wonderful videos.
I started knitting 2 years ago so I am new to the “sport”, although I have crocheted for almost 40 years. This thumb gusset tutorial is the BEST!! I use it every time I make fingerless mittens. Out of all the video instruction on RU-vid for me yours are the perfect mix of speed and detailed instruction. Thank you!!
Thank you so much. You are a very adventurous knitter. You might want to join my Facebook group - Knitting with Suzanne Bryan. We talk a lot about knitting skills in that group.
Always love your tutorials! When I’m in any doubt, your channel is the one I go to. Your instructions are clear, precise & easy to see without all the “fluff” added. Thank you for sharing all your wisdom. Cheers 😊❤️🥰😘😍💕
One of the best tutorials on knitting a thumb gusset I've seen. This addresses every problem a fingerless mitt with a thumb has. Thank you. God bless you. Romans 10:8-13; John 3:16-21
I know I'm not ready for this yet, but thank goodness for RU-vid and for your teaching. I know I'll get there eventually, and I'll be back. Thanks for posting.
Hi Suzanne, thank you for this excellent tutorial. I've been knitting mittens and gloves for years, and never thought of working the thumb gusset in this manner. You are an excellent teacher. Your instructions are very clear and easy to follow. I also like your straight forward approach in that you get right to the instructions. In my opinion, you have the best knitting videos on RU-vid. Thank you!
clear images, clear steps, well designed video...but best of all you knit the same way I learned (continental) and I can literally follow step by step. I could FEEL how it's done!
Hi Susan, sending love from Indonesia. Thank you so very much for all your videos. Dunno why, I always ended up looking for your explanation..much more aceptable and understandable ( coz English is not realy my language) as I need clear talk rather than hearing music backgrounds. Keep it simple, and I do learn a lot from you! Blessed you dear 🤍🤍🤍
FINALLY! I've been avoiding trying to make gloves because dealing with the thumb scared me, but you made it look so easy. You're a great teacher! Thank you so much!
Seriously, I have knit mittens for 50+ years and this is the best method for thumb gussets I've ever seen. I can't understand the negative responses (maybe they can show their method on youtube). Thanks so much!!!!
Thank you! Yes, I have to be a little thick skinned. But, because of knitters like you, I continue to share my techniques. Have a great day and happy knitting!
Suzanne, I was a frustrated thrower, although proficient at it. I had continental "envy", possibly because I first learned to crochet holding the yarn in the left hand. I have worked hard to make myself learn to knit continental and my journey has taken me down the roads to Eastern style, Portuguese, and combination knitting. Of course the biggest obstacle to me and many is the purl stitch, I don't know why. However, when I watch you knit, it is so smooth I figured I would keep watching you until my hands mimicked your movement. Can't say it was easy and it took a few years, I mean really. One day, not too long ago, my fingers just connected with this old brain and voila, I can and do love to continental and I throw when necessary. Ha! I thought you and your followers might get a kick out of that. You can teach and old dog new tricks.
Madam, what an excellent video, you knited the inclreases, showed percisely how to do it, and then once done you showed how it looks and it looks perfect. Thank you for sharing!!!
Finally, a tutorial that I can understand! I'm a continental knitter so I'm doubly grateful for your video. Now I can finally stop avoiding the thumb gusset.
12:00, picking up bar stitches and twist it one on each end of row. 13:13 explaining , 14:00, 15:00 which stitches to pick up for thumb finishing after making gusset. I love all of her videos! Best tips ever.
Thank you for showing how to compare to your hand to get a true fit. This is the first time I feel like I can actually make gloves that fit. Lots of love to you 🧡
Thank you, Suzanne, for explaining and demonstrating the creation of a thumb gusset. Very well done, I needed this, took good notes. Thanks again!! Sally in Portland, Oregon.
Thank you for this tutorial. It is exactly what I needed to learn to finish the first fingerless mitt of a pair for my husband. I like how you enlarge the screen to show details of what you are doing. I know I will refer to this video again for the second mitt!
Thanks so much , Suzanne! This is the best tip ever and you explain and demonstrate it perfectly. I love to make mitts. Now I know what to do with the extra Yarn on each side of the gusset as I bring it together. I’m glad I found you.
Thankyou for such great tutorial. Your demonstrations are clear & concise. Have watched other tutorials on m1L & m1R that were totally confusing. One viewing of yours was all that was needed.
This is a real knitting lesson. As you taught the thinking behind the stitches, and how to recognise them, it has helped me to understand what I'm doing! Thank you 🌻
You make it easy to understand. I've been wanting to try knitting some gloves but was afraid of the thumb gusset. lol...Now I understand how to use the 2 circular needles...definitely going to try making gloves.
You are a really good teacher, thank you for making this comprehensible to a beginner. You answered every question I had. I also appreciated when you zoomed in to show what you were doing better. I will knit along with you and rewind this a lot I imagine.
After watching this AMAZING tutorial on finishing the thumb gusset, I will now have the most perfect thumbs on my fingerless mitts & mittens! Gussets were the bane of my existence until now.....thank you so much for this amazing tutorial!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge about thumb gusset construction. I am going to be doing this job today. I also learnt how to do m1l & m1r which I have been stumped about for ages but it does look much better than kfb. Good job, well done. Thank you.
Thank you for this tutorial, it made it so much easier for me to grasp the concept of the gusset! Now my thumbs are so much more nicer and cleaner and seamless looking.
Perfect! Thanks for commenting. I hope you have chosen to subscribe and please share my videos in your social media groups, like FB, Ravelry, Pinterest, etc. Thanks again and happy knitting, Suzanne.
Probably the best tutorial I've seen to date, very well explained. Thank you, all the best and a very Happy New Year, and I agree you would be awesome to knit with ❣
WOW...I was struggling with the M1's and watching your video has made it so clear. I live in Michigan and will be knitting mittens! I am a sock knitter but looking forward to mittens.
This video and your commentary is seriously a life saver. I was at my wits end trying to understand what a pattern I was working on was talking about, but then I came over here and found your video. Thank you so much! I was able to finally finish my first ever DPN pattern!
THANK YOU. I need to learn this technique and have not seen any other demonstration and instruction that I understand and believe I can duplicate. Looking forward to learning more. Again, thank you.
Thank you for wonderful video and the pattern! I know mittens, but this was great..like having a friend sit next to me instead of being all alone! Very kind of you. Rose in NJ.
This is another great video of yours. I'm so excited to get knitting more "advanced" items. So far I've only made hats, cowls and right now I'm making a sweater. I'll be making matching mittens to go with one of the hats next. But, can you explain why you would use two circular needles instead of the magic loop?
@@SuzanneBryan I'm new at knitting and can't quite figure out HOW you use 2 sets of circulars. I'm notcsure how you would cast on. I love fingerless gloves(they're the reason I've learned to knit!)and really want to master this thumb gusset,,I've just never seen the 2 sets of circulars used ,and I'm confused !! (Also,I've never used dpn's,,don't even own any~They intimidate me! I have many sets of circulars,,16in and longer). Thanks in advance~!!
@@vivienneclarke2421 ha ha! I only use DPNs- Isn't it fun and funny how we all have our own way to get the same result. But yes, Suzanne is really an excellent mentor-Trust her!
@@injoycards Yes,,it really is funny~!! I'm self taught,,from yt videos only,,and even tho I'm left handed I've taught myself how to knit right handed to make it easier down the road lol,,so I knit in this weird combo of both left and right handedness😂 High 5 to you for mastering DPN's they will probably always scare me~!!! Suzanne's vids have been a tremendous help to me along the way~!!!🌟
Cristal clear tutorial; thank you so much! Just one question: when you are making two 2 plain rounds after increasing , what that is meaning? Are they extra- not Including the one with increasing ? Thank you for your kind answer!
Knitting with Suzanne Bryan , Thank you! That’s I was supposing! I’m working on dark blue yarn and it’s difficult to count the stitches. I’m so glad to learn and make it by your méthode ! The French will tell “il n’y a pas photo” - there can’t be compared ! My old one , learned from a granny from Moldavia, 40 years ago! Chilly waving from Evian! I’m knitting in the ferry on the way home from Lausanne! Enjoying your tutorials, Suzanne!
It is not a pattern, it is a tutorial so that you can use any yarn and needles to create your own personally fitted fingerless mitt. www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/fingerless-mitt-tutorial
This was so incredibly helpful! I’ve made gloves for years but have always had little holes in my increase area! This is so much better!! I’m so excited!!!
Very, very nice finishing techniques! You have an eye for detail that really leaves the finished item polished. Thank you for this tutorial. Looking forward to the others to bring my knitting to a higher level.
Great video! Took me several days to find what I was looking for. Just perfect and thank you so much for the pattern. I was trying to convert an old pattern for magic loop and I just could not figure out the thumb gusset. What an excellent explanation and especially the close up camera work. Thanks again, truly appreciated.
This was just perfect, I've been knitting wrist warmers and just stitching them up the side leaving a hole for the thumb. Your explanation of how to make the gusset makes me want to take on the challenge of making them in the round and make the gusset. Thank you so much for your excellent explanation of how it is done.
I usually crochet and find knitting difficult but wanted to make some fingerless gloves and your tutorial was AMAZING! Thank you so very much for very clear, concise, well-paced explanations and really excellent quality visual instruction. I feel more confident and ready to start some of the other projects I have always wanted to try. Top notch video!
Fantastic tutorial, I'm so happy I stumbled across it! Your instructions were very clear and the tips gave me that "ohhhhh!" Light bulb moment. I have been knitting for years and just accepted the thumb gusset holes or sloppily stitched them closed. Now I have learned a new technique, thank you for sharing your knowledge!
THANK YOU, i just finished knitting my first ever pair of fingerless mitts yesterday and i gotta say, i was really intimidated by the whole thumb situation but this video made it so easy and clear! i managed to knit such pretty thumb gussets with your help
Great tutorial. I had tried fingerless mitts before and was stumped by the gusset. Thanks so much for making such a clear video. I'm ready to cast on for mitts now!
Thank you so very very much, dear! Now l can knit thumpless mittens, mittens with thumps and gloves with fingers, too, AND toe - socks for spring! Yeah, thank you so much again and be blesssed by our LORD!
Long time knitter but new to mittens and soooo frustrated with the holes! Asked around many times and finally found this amazing tutorial.....thank you so very much for solving my problem. I now have some lovely fingerless mittens made with a gorgeous skein of llama/merino/cashmere/silk I purchased at a yarn fair recently
