Korg Kronos Tutorial: 04 Sampling Omnisphere in the Kronos Sampler

This tutorial explains how to use the Kronos Sampler to transfer a sound from Omnisphere to the Kronos. It also explains how to program the HD1 to use that sound.
(switch to 1080P so you can better read the captured screens)

yes you can do this, you have to sample the normal note and the slide up in two separate samples. Then create 2 multisamples one with the normal notes and one with only the slide notes (use the same keyzones). Then in the HD-1 engine use the two multisamples in one OSC where you set the velocity switch point between the two multisamples. (you can setup till 8 multisampled switch point this way), you can even crossfade between them if you want.

Great video! You are a fantastic teacher. Why don't you sell your best Omnisphere sounds for the Kronos? Many of us have a Kronos but not Omnisphere and it'd easy for you but hard for us to put together such great sounds. I'd be more than willing to pay for them...:) Thanks for all your tuturials, they are the best!

Hi francis, when you reboot the Korg Kronos you Always have to load your samples again, you can do that from the disk menu, or automatically from the Global menu where there is a tab called Autoload KSC, there browse to your currently saved Sampleset and load the Sampleset with the name _userbank.ksc attached to it. That way it will be a low memory streaming sampleset.

that depends, when cloning the sound to have it on board of the sampler, then i always leave the insert FX on during sampling in Omnipshere, because that makes up the sound. The send FX (like delay and reverb) are disabled during sampling. But when i want to use Omnisphere sounds as a new oscillator i turn every effect off and use the Kronos FX to create new sounds.

Hi. Great video. On the "Sample Edit" and "Loop Edit" page, is there any way to scrub through the sampled waveform, or some kind of rolling playhead that shows which part of the waveform is being played? Specifically I'm wanting to find where to end my waveform with as little guess work. Finding a start point is a tiny bit of guess work, although very easy. However, finding an end point in a little more complicated waveform has me having to listen to the whole waveform (or at least wherever I add the start point) in order to get to the end point. Thanks.

you can create a directory on the kronos for instance with the name: samples, then press the disk button, then the utility tab and select the samples from your usb, then right top menu and select copy, then go to the SSD of the kronos and select the samples map and select paste. Then you have the samples on the kronos.

Thank you for you answers. I am getting more and more addicted to this killer machine! It seems like it's able to do anything you want. But I have one very last Question: I heard that the seamless sound transition (this patch remain thing in setlist mode for example) will not always work. Is it true? And if it is, is it caused by certain combinations of the different sound engines?

Hello Qui, Instead of saving and loading WAV files, would it be possible to play the notes on cubase while sample them directly in the Kronos via a Kronos USB audio input ?

if you want to modify you existing library then load the sampleset without the _userbank extension. the _userbank extension is only for streaming the samples, so if you load a _userbank and save that bank again you won't have any samples in it since it was a streaming library. To avoid that when you want to add samples or modify them in that case load the same bank without the _userbank extension and modify that one and save that one again. That's all and then it works

SST always works as far as i know, unless you are using a KARMAFIED sound, when changing patches the KARMA module is reset so the previous sound stops. Which makes sense. But if you are using only programs then SST works (as displayed in my other video called 'soundset demo: Magical Space', that one uses only programs that are changed in realtime with the help of SST.

Hello Qui Robinez. On the Kronos, Is there some way to record external audio & also internal/Kronos audio the sequencer & DAW, (I already know how to do that part), BUT, then EXPORT the audio from the sequencer/DAW, as a wav/aiff file? I want to make a little demo of some Kronos & Triton sounds. I want to use the Kornos's DAW to record my Kronos & Triton (on the Kronos' DAW) & then export a.wav file of the recording & upload it here. Is that possible? Thank you! =D

very impressive work! In the whole, my feeling is that kronos could make anything you want! BUT, it seems to be hard to use and to program....that pad sound is awesome!!

@ 12:01 you mentioned that “samples are removed from memory when the Kronos is shut off”. So, you’re saying that there is no way to store custom samples in the Kronos internally on the Kronos's hard drive? Samples are not stored with the HD-1 program you created? Please Clarify. Otherwise, if you have an external hard-drive connected to the KRONOS, is it possible for ALL samples to load automatically each time the Kronos is powered-on? Please clarify.

You got to save the samples to disc and the programs and multisamples. Then everything works fine.

If an omnisphere sound has velocity switches like on guitar sounds where they slide up, would it be still possible to do a multi sample with for example two samples per key, depending on the velocity?

Please could you explain how to save this properly? - When I work with samples i 'clear all' from the ram then after creating a multisample and program, i have used the 'save all' to create a .KSC - however, when selecting multiple 'personal' .KSC files on auto load, the kronos will only load up one sample and says 'sample not loaded' on various other custom user sample programs... - Is their a specific procedure for safely saving/recalling the samples? hi sir Qui Robinez i just had one question i just insert my wav file into kronos seq mode and sampling it to multisample to convert into prog mode and save it but when i turned off and on my kronos this what ive got samplenotloaded!! any help on that sir?

jonesgerard Yes Omnisphere is the flagship VST / AU instrument from spectrasonics. It's stunning. I've used it as an example for this demo, but of course you could use anything to sample ranging from other VST's to guitar or vocal inputs.

Hey Qui, I saved the sample set as an KSC. I notice that the whenever the program that I created from the samples is selected, the audio coming from my computer via USB does not come through. Any way to change this?

Luis Zimbron II Never mind, you have to change the program to "Use Global Settings" in the Play>Audio In/Sampling tab.

Hi Qui, thank you for your videos, I always enjoy watching them and learn more about the Kronos. My big question is, how can you keep having your samples when you remove the USB hard drive? Is it possible to have the samples loaded with the Hard drive out? If yes, then how? I've been struggling a lot with that problem...

@Qui Ribinez Hey Ive upgraded my kronos x to 3.02. I can see the Berlin Grande and Austrian Granded but they dont see sound do i have to purchase them before that takez place?

+John Bowers yes, for the kronosX you need to buy the berlin grand and austrian grand seperately if you want to use those sounds. But how did you install those programs, they aren't part of the normal 3.02 update. You shouldn't see those programs at all after updating the firmware.

Hi Qui, thank you for taking the time to make this great tutorial. I've got problems with loops, no matter how hard I try, can't get the loop to be seamless, how do you manage that?

The trick is to find a looppoint that replicates the waveform you want to loop, be sure that both the start point and the endpoint of the loop are at a point of zero DB (or the same DB level), this avoids that the loop point can be heared with clicks or volume changes

Thanx a lot for the reply, yes, this is what I thought, but this part seems to be the hardest, and the most time-consuming, unfortunately I can hear clicks no matter how similar the waveforms are, and both on zero dB. What does the linear vs. Power in the dialogue box do BTW? Gonna check the manual.

@ Qui Robinez I went to Korg.com to update my X. The Austrian grande comes in the X where you can download certain expansion as a test where you can preview but it fades out in about 5 sec. The berlin grande pops up when I choose the German dark grande and click the tab that states piano type all piano types play except for the Berlin Grandes.

Now, Sample Robot does all the sampling and let’s you save your files as a KSC file. You just load the file in the Kronos and make it program. Much much faster these days.

This is a great tutorial! Saving my ass! Just one thing I'm having trouble with, I saved my samples to DISK in a ksc folder. When I go back to load the samples after switching the Kronos on and off, there is an option when I click load to either clear all or append...what does this mean? I also tried loading all files from the folder I saved with my new samples and it seems that I can only select clear all in the load page, and although it will load those samples, it wipes my entire pre-load sample library... What is going on with this does anyone know? Very confusing. Any clarity much appreciated thanks :)

It's really easy, if you want to clear all Samples in your kronos memory then select clear. But if you want to add them to the current memory then choose append (so this is the one you need). But a better solution is to press the global button and then the autoload tab. Select your KSC file there with autoload and Virtual memory enabled. Then it's a streaming sample library that will be automatically loaded and don't take that much memory because it's virtual memory which is streamed.

Banging my head into the wall with all this DAW vs Hardware.... Why not just use Omnisphere with midi controller? Why bother with all the work of import to Kronos? I have a Kronos 2 88, but finding myself wanting to go to NI Kontrol S61 or S88, and some plug-ins like Omnisphere. With a Maschine Studio, the workflow just seems so much more logical for the studio. Kronos interface just not doing it for me.... Nice video though... Old, but good....
