Who? Hi, I am a Japanese to English translator who does clips of Vtubers, mostly from Hololive, but I'll also do VOMS from time to time. The people in these Vtuber clips do have their own channels where they do live streaming, usually games. My favorite Vtubers are Korone, Rushia & Coco, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy the rest.
Why? The Vtuber idea started a few years ago in Japan with Kizuna AI. Now people from all over the world including both Japan and English speaking countries have Vtubers. I was learning Japanese since before this happened, and now I translate.
How? Learn Japanese, Learn a small amount of video editing, learn subtitling, and most of all, learn to code. (Actually most of my video editing is done automatically by code)
What? I translate interesting or funny clips I find while watching Vtubers live. I'm always open to requests and I read most of your comments, so fire away with your suggestions!

The stream where she live translated English was pretty impressive. She doesn't just talk some phrases; she can actually understand what is being said and integrate that. A lot of talents who will occasionally speak it "okay" by Japanese standards lack that comprehension, especially listening.

Could be a cultural thing. I'm relatively new to the whole vtuber thing but I grew up around sports and ichiro Suzuki would speak English in the clubhouse with his teammates just fine but any time he gave interviews he would always do them in Japanese and use an interpreter to translate it to English. Reason being he was worried that what he wanted to convey to fans wouldn't be clear if he spoke English.

Korone is definitely better at understanding English than she is at speaking it, and she's pretty alright at that. Chances are, unless you use non-mainstream slang or technical terms, she'll get >80% of what you're saying, not just what you meant.

Kiara said it best here. While Korone isn't all that fluent in English, what little she says is conveyed very well. It doesn't take much from her to get us overseas fans smiling. Every time Korone gives us even a simple "Hey guys!" we come crawling out of the woodwork to show our support!

I noticed that a lot of the JP members' lack of English fluency belies their impressive English comprehension. A lot of them can't really speak it, but they somehow can listen/read and understand it a lot better.

@@JanitorAntisocial understanding a complete sentence is a lot easier than forming a sentence by yourself. Understanding lets you actually fill parts with context. For example: "Wow, I think its **** how some people can **** japanese to english on the fly.". While you dont know 2 of the words in that sentence, you can still read it and im 90% sure you will be correct with your guess.

It's incredibly easy to offend some asshat twitter mob that like ruining nice things. Examples: Coco Taiwan controversy, Pikamee with Hogwarts Legacy, Marine and Miko reading a bl book and having a laugh, Mano Aloe model leak, Holostars x Hololive collabs controversies, Rushia getting a discord message. Her worry might be cute, but is not unwarranted unfortunately - given how terrible and lunatic part of the fanbase is.

It’s always so interesting hearing this perspective on English. Like it’s pretty hard to say actually offensive things with the simple English they usually use/learn (Miko’s classic GTA clip aside). Even swearing isn’t really a big deal as we’ve seen an infinite amount of times at this point

It's always weird to hear foreigners say they worry about "offending" people with bad English, and they just can't conceptualize that there's no such thing. Literally no one on the entire planet will be offended, even if you actually somehow manage to stumble your way so far into left field and say something completely out of the blue. Clearly you've never been to Twitter. They'll get offended at other languages for having words that sound "bad" in English. They one tried to cancel Korean for 게가 (nega) which means "you" which sounds like a certain word in English. They tried to cancel an anime for a character screaming "Me ga" which means "My eyes" for also sounding like a certain word. They tried to cancel Spanish for the word negro and tried to change the name of Montenegro, the country, because it had the word negro in its name.

I kinda get where Korone is coming from, about not wanting to speak too much English because she might say something offensive. I mean, I saw this video where this lady was teaching on how to say the word "you" in Japanese. She lists all these words on how to say "you" in Japanese, and then by the end of the video she's like, "but we don't really most of them because it could be considered rude." Ehhhh?!
