Want to install a connector on your KSGER Hot Air Rework Station so the heat gun is easy to remove/replace? Me too, so I did just that and found two other easy mods to perform at the same time - one VERY IMPORTANT for SAFETY. NOTE - You perform these mods at your own risk. See pinned comment.
Connector type used is a GX16-8 pin aviation connector - links below:

You mention the AC voltage is not present on the pins when the connector isn't plugged in but I would still be concerned about having even a switched AC pin exposed. Failure of the detection and switch circuit could be lethal especially in countries with 240 VAC so people should be careful if they want to make this mod.

Yes Steven, that's a very good point I failed to mention in the video. 100% agree. For those that wish to do this mod in order to have the convenience of a removable gun, there is some risk involved. When a TRIAC fails, it's usually in a closed condition. In short (pun intended), if you do this GX16 connector mod, best to ensure the station is completely powered off before removing or fitting your gun in the off chance there are angry electrons gathered at that "hot" exposed pin. Better yet would be to use a "reversed" GX connector (exposed pins are in the un-powered male/gun side connector); but I couldn't find any 8 pin versions of the reversed GX16, 7 pin seems to be the largest they make. I think there are reversed GX20-8 connectors, but I'm sure they would be too large considering the nut on the 16 was already grazing the outer case.

@@Rchelicopterfun you could use the 7 pin "reversed" gx16 connector and just remove the thermistor, as it just measures ambient temperature
@dekus80
@dekus80 4 года назад
Josh McCellan, Thermistor measures cold end temp. Station calculate temp as T thermocouple - T thermistor. I know that for sure. You need to make a simple circuit that determines the connection of the fan to the connector. For example, by voltage drop on a thermistor pin lower 3.3V (using one comparator). It is 3.3V without thermistor. Thermistor is connected to ground. Аnd use a relay contacts to supply line voltage to the connector. Physical disconnection is required to decouple the connector from the line voltage.

@@Rchelicopterfun Couldn't you connect the ground wire (white) to the housing? That way 7 pins would be enough.

Thanks for the initial review and mod video. I bought the KSGER iron a while ago based off your review and couldn't be happier. It would have been nice too see the hot air station in actual use on some boards, but I'll probably end up it getting one too!

Nice catch with the lack of grounding for the housing and the pinched cable. I'll keep that in mind if I buy one of these to my workbench (I got an a WEP 858D+ that I'm quite happy with). Cheers from Sweden - KUTGW :)

I noticed lack of ground on the T12 too. The right side rotary encoder was also floating - it didn't have solder on the mechanical pins that go into the board. Also, a lot of places are missing a ground. May be why there was the issue where it would go between error, heating, error, heating, etc.. regardless of tip, etc... also the GX12-5 connector doesn't have a screw in it. meaning the piece rotates easily for the iron. so could be an issue there too. Waiting on banggood to make it right; but I went ahead and ordered a replacement iron just in case it is that and did a few other things.

It is 60Hz PWM on a fan mosfet. It is possible to modify it in a firmware by changing this value. Only 2$ stlink is needed to flash firmware.

I wonder what that rather bright LED is for near the coin cell? Seem an odd inclusion. Unless it's a warning light in case you power up the board but with the front panel disconnected - no noise, no screen, but live board, hence the warning. But that situation seems a tad contrived. Any alternative thoughts on it?
@Rchelicopterfun

It's just a power indicator LED.

what does that relay do on the circuit board? I thought it isolated the heater from mains, but it looks like it is doing something entirely different.

There is no relay in this unit. If you are referring to the black component in the corner, it's a transformer (zmpt107).

I never use that switch so I had no need to move it. The magnetic switch in the handle does the same thing after all when the handle is placed in the magnetic holder. Of course if you wanted to move yours - go for it.

This may seem like a stupid question but i have the T12 Soldering Station could i plug a heat gun into that with GX16 8 PIN Connector thanks
@Rchelicopterfun
@Rchelicopterfun 4 года назад
Nope, the soldering station is very different as is the GX connector (5-pin and smaller on the solder station). The heat gun also needs line voltage (ie 120 or 240 vac) and is controlled by a triac, not a mosfet.

@CrissBlackHawk

No, they use different power supplies. Solder iron works on 24V and the hot air gun at 120V. The connectors also have different pin count.

@Rchelicopterfun
@Rchelicopterfun 3 года назад
It should work if yours has the EXACT same control board as the one I have because it's a universal voltage board. What is voltage specific however is the heating element in the gun. I have no idea how the heat gun will react at lower line voltage. It will likely be okay, just taking longer to heat up and perhaps not able to get to maximum temp, but that is just an educated guess.

why only 8 pin and not the 10pin variant of the plug to add a switch link in for the rear switch. so if its unplugged the unit knows power should be off
@Rchelicopterfun

Too big. GX16 8 pin is the largest that will fit. To get to 10 pin, would have to go up to GX20 and the 16 barely fits.

Interesting. I can't find any here in Canada and the few aviation GX connector spec PDF's I've been able to pull up list 8 core as their highest # for the the 16 size one. By all means if 10 pin GX16's do exist, that would be a way to add another layer of safety for those that want to. 🙂

What did you do for a stand for the Hot air handpiece?
@Rchelicopterfun
@Rchelicopterfun 4 года назад
I just attached the separate magnetic holder to the side of one of my work bench legs. It's okay for the amount I use the HotAir station (a couple times a week perhaps); but if I was to use it more like my soldering iron (almost daily), I'm sure I would take the time to build an actual stand that I could move around on the workbench.

I bought the KSGER dual solder/ heat gun station and planned on doing the same mod (it’s actually how I found your video!) One thing I was hoping your video would answer is whether the omission of the connector is for safety reasons. If you don’t have the gun connected, is live pin ever energised? I know you show it not zapping you, but it’s not clear whether the rear toggle switch is open or closed at the time. I can imagine this mod being pretty dangerous if the pin can go live while exposed. Maybe it refuses to energise the live wire if it doesn’t detect the gun? If not, then if the socket was female and the gun wire had the male connector on it, this would be safe.

why don't you put the female end on the unit? - seems to be silly to even chance the male side being live on the KSGER.

I mention that in the very first pinned comment: "Better yet would be to use a "reversed" GX connector (exposed pins are in the un-powered male/gun side connector); but I couldn't find any 8 pin versions of the reversed GX16, 7 pin seems to be the largest they make. I think there are reversed GX20-8 connectors, but I'm sure they would be too large considering the nut on the 16 was already grazing the outer case."

The lack of a connector isn’t an omission, it’s good design. Why on earth do you need to disconnect the gun?
@Rchelicopterfun
@Rchelicopterfun 4 года назад
For the exact same reasons it's beneficial to have a removable soldering iron from a soldering station. 1. Makes for easier replacement &/or maintenance. 2. On the occasions where you don't want any crap such as bundles of cord cluttering up your work area when you are working on other projects. 3. Most importantly, because I wanted to. Moreover did you see the amount of cable compression by that factory installed strain relief bushing?! That was piss poor design partner on a multi conductor cord carrying both line voltage & low voltage.
