Electric KTM Freeride E-XC vs Alta Redshift EXR. How do they stack up? I compare the KTM Freeride Electric to the Alta Redshift Electric motorcycle. Watch the video and put some of the online B.S. to rest. The Alta Redshift was the first of it’s kind. So was the Electric KTM Freeride E-XC. Who’s technology was better? All this covered in the KTM Freeride Vs. Alta Redshift review in this video.

You’re correct. I’ll pin this comment. They say it in press releases, but there’s pretty much zero information on it. I found one photo of a little system. It uses “the bulkhead” as the heat sink and runs the hoses in the frame.

I have two Alta MXR’s, I have done some upgrades. 1. Renthal bars. 2. Titanium foot pegs. 3. Öhlins forks and shock. 4. Left hand rear brake, as well as foot brake. 5. Miscellaneous titanium parts to drop some weight. 6. Full Alta/KTM graphics package. I did the KTM just for some visual fun. I also have two KTM 350 EXC’s 7. Acerbis hand guards. I spend most of my riding in dense Florida forests and getting your knuckles punched by very hard palm arms is common. 8. Seat concepts comfortable seat. I ride Hare Scrambles and Enduro’s so all my bikes have them. I have not ridden the Freeride and plan to buy one. I will say just like with my Tesla being the best car I’ve ever owned or driven, my Alta’s are simply the greatest motorcycle I have ever owned or ridden, by far. On a closed loop course of six miles I’m not seconds quicker I’m minutes quicker on my Alta over my KTM race bike. Great video, let me know when your coming to South Florida and I’ll let you rip on the Alta at the ranch. We’ve got 30 miles of trails.

Hey John, thanks for the video ... you've made some very good points in your comparison to the redshift. I've had my eye on the Freeride since they were introduced in Europe, and almost pulled the trigger on one when KTM made them available to select dealers a couple of years ago. My local KTM dealer was offered a testmarket and he accepted, and quickly sold all of the bikes KTM gave him. Now he's been given 9 bikes for 2020, and he's already down to 1 or 2 of those. At $10,200 it's still a lot of money for me to consider pulling the trigger, but the appeal of this (for me) is the ability to ride close to home at not piss-off the neighbors. In most cases, they wouldn't even know the bike is being ridden because they would never hear it. I don't ride much, but my son of 14 does, and he's currently on a big wheel 85. I thought this bike, if set up properly, could be a great way to let him ride a MX small track we've built on land next to our home. We're rural, but still have neighbors within earshot, and some with a clear view of the track. We've had very few noise complaints over the years, but even one complaint is one too many. I've seen this bike up close ... I've sat on it, and checked out with my son. In my opinion, it's probably still too big for him. I wish KTM would see the value in building some more electric bikes in smaller chassis. They have their comparable ebike in the 50cc size, and that bike has been really well received in my area. I think an ebike in the 65 and 85 size would be wildly well received. Just my 2 cents.
@JohnHowerton137
@JohnHowerton137 4 года назад
They’re coming eventually. There is a lowering kit. The main thing is the weight. It’s not light. If you’ve touched it, you know. Lose your footing at a stop and you fall over with it. My first bike at 13 was a tank. I wanted to ride, so I managed it in wet clay and roots with bald tires... because it was what I had. In motion freeride doesn’t really feel heavy when traction is good, but for sure still way heaver than an 85. Feels more like my 350EXC but more top heavy. Maybe just get him a SurRon to goof off on. They’re tough enough, and he’ll still develop the skills.

This was an eye opener. I own KTM Freeride e-xc that I converted to supermoto. Recently I gained interest in Alta, they sell few in Netherlands for 17000€ plus ~25000€ to import it to Denmark where i live. Sooo not worth it to what extra you get over the KTM. I like the idea of sligthly better range and more power, Alta looka good too. But you calmed me down in wanting one, I'll stick with my KTM.
@JohnHowerton137
@JohnHowerton137 3 года назад
So the Alta is a superior bike, that’s just fact. Superior [for what] is where it gets tricky... On street it will have a huge advantage over the Freeride, which as you know, is only good for 80kph. The other place it would have a huge advantage would fast cross country motocross or bigger motocross tracks. The high speed stuff it just isn’t what the Freeride was designed for. It’s a small chassis enduro bike. It shines in tight stuff. Ripping back alleys, tight singletrack, or small tracks it’s pretty awesome. The Alta also has limited parts avail. Not something you want to be crashing and braking stuff in the woods or driveway practicing stunts. Freeride parts are normal price and easy to get at any dealer. If I had disposable money, I’d have an Alta. I’m a working man, so I’ll be on a Freeride until KTM or maybe Honda makes a full blown electric MX bike.

Because this bike is so light and nimble, it has a very high hop-on hop-off factor. And it looks good! but this is personal taste. the standard tires are lasting way longer than I anticipated. I have about 3000km of street riding, stair climbing, BMX-course offroading, enduro riding on it, and it still lasts. However I'm starting to see rips on all nobs. My next tires will be some enduro street tires. They will be way less grippy, so maybe I'll get some small drifts out of it on a slick parkinglot.
@JohnHowerton137

The stock tires are pretty good. If I was trail riding they’d be 👌 The way I ride it requires stiffer sidewalls and more front lug. The look is an acquired taste, but I like it now too. Map 3 should drift ✊ Careful of high-siding with the soft bouncy suspension when she steps out.

That was actually a recycled press release. It's still the 3.88kwh battery that they upgraded to a couple years back. The last new thing was the brakes in '21. That's fantastic mileage though, shouldn't be to limiting on your riding fun. I can get the hours out of the battery on the trail rides, but the mileage still ends up being in the 20-23 range. MX riding is more like 15.

Alright, i'll bite. Admittedly, i'm an Alta owner. I own a MXR and an EXR. You're comparing a play bike (the KTM), meant to last long with playfully weak power, to a real offroad performance weapon (the EXR), whose primary goal is to make gas bike owners wish they bought an Alta because its faster and easier to ride. If Alta was trying to make a long range bike, they would have easily changed up the cell configuration so that it had much higher capacity at the sacrifice of power. Hell, they could have made a super powerful bike that only lasted half the time (The motor is said to be able to handle upwards of 100hp)! That was not their goal, though. In the early stages of their life, Alta's goal was to prove that electric dirtbikes can compete and beat gas bikes in normal conditions, while still having the range to last longer than most people can physically last on a dirtbike. I think they nailed it. They are fantastic machines, and i'm so lucky to be able to own 2 of them.
@JohnHowerton137

Map 3 really isn’t playfully weak. Map 2 is about like a WR250 or something. I ride in map 2 most the time. It’s plenty of juice for most the population in smaller smaces. I’m not the egomaniac that need’s 100 HP. On a small track the KTM will be hard to beat. And I really wasn’t comparing, I was telling people to stop comparing. Just pointing out, that things are just scaled down everywhere (capacity, power, weight, chassis size). My point was, if you scaled it up, the numbers would still pretty much match up. KTM’s goal was the same... make it extremely ridable and be in the 20s for HP, just like their other Freerides that start with base gas engine that range from about 37-57 HP. No doubt with a firmware change, a 6kwh battery and a 450sx chassis. We could compare. The Altas are sick. Congrats. I’d own one in a second. Well, maybe not now that they are gone. I was sick when I heard they folded. I hope that aftermarket companies will keep them alive so they don’t all become paperweights.

I also own an Alta mxr and KTM Freeride, it really does not make much sense to compare these bikes. The KTM is a nice Freeride bike, perfect for beginners or to to have some fun in the woods, but if you put it on a Mx track the batteries die after approx 15 to 20 minutes and the suspension is totally horrible. Even after all available updates to the KTM, the Alta has at least twice the range, more than twice the power and regarding the chassis and suspension the freeride feels more like a pit bike because all these components were designed for the KTM 85 bikes and are not ment to handle adult riders or extreme jumps. Both bikes are nice, both make sense depending where you want to use them.

BTW when I’m in map two and ripping it up I can only get 18-20 miles of range on a fairly new battery (40 hours) in map one trail (joy) riding I can easily get 30-35 miles. In map 4 on an MX track I can usually get 20 minutes max. I’ve been working with a race team to build a quick release system for hot swapping the batteries. The theoretical time to swap is between four and five minutes. This would be to slow for Hare Scrambles. It would work for enduros but there would still be a range issue if I were to ride at “A” level. We need more battery density before these bike really take hold in the sport.
@JohnHowerton137
@JohnHowerton137 4 года назад
That would be pretty cool. Yeah, you pin them open and they drain juice just like a mainjet. Most people don't understand that MX fuel tanks only last 30min +2... because they aren't ever on the mainjet to experience that. Mostly just Joe Blow squid popping his mouth online. That's about what I get from a mix of Map 2/3. The Alta (MX) in Map 2/3 is a somewhat comparable output to the KTM's Map 3. Like 36hp & matching torque. The Alta is heavier though. Back in the day we were told 7lb = 1hp. So if that rang true, the Alta loses 4hp/ft putting say Map 2 within 1ft (32fp) of the KTM's 31fp. Alta still has like 8hp more though (KTM 24.5) and a higher top speed. The KTM could close that gap with a 46T sprocket or 12T on the counter. So really, the bikes aren't that far off. Thank you for posting your battery numbers and not being an asshole on the defense. We all learn more from good discussion. I'm really not trying to bag on the Alta at all, just want to get info out there for people who love dirtbikes like us. I think the Altas were great and I think they look pretty sick too. Just wanted to give people some perspective with this video. All the info out there for the KTM leaves a lot to be desired.

John Howerton, I will post some pics of my Alta’s on your FB message if you want. The one main benefit of the Alta’s/Freeride’s is the low center of gravity. My KTM 350 EXC has an after market 3.2 gal tank. So at the start of a Hare Scrambles I have an additional 26-30 lbs of top heavy weight along with my case, piston, cam, etc. all that top weight creates a completely different feel. Although my Alta weighs about 30lbs. more the Alta “feels” as nimble as a 125cc. It is extremely flickable and the torque pulling out of tight turns is breathtaking.

Brian Smith sure, or instagram if you have it. I rarely get on FB, but when I do, I’ll look. Another guy commented that it’s stull really easy to get stuff for them, so that’s good. The Freeride carries the weight higher. They really should have designed the battery lower. That will be one of my beefs in my review I make this weekend. Honestly, its a better MX bike than it is a trail bike for that very reason. Makes sense, since the original bike was an E-SX, but I know there was some steer tube changes and stuff. I’m excited to get the suspension done. Springs go in this week, and then I’m guessing it’ll need to be sent off for valving which should make it corner and stuff a lot more aggressively. I have a 350EXC too. I’m letting Ryno ride it on our ride tomorrow and then selling it to a young guy on Friday. I love it and hate it at the same time. Just don’t like the engine braking mostly. Just never adapted to the 4T. If I get another, it will be a 250EXC

Aloha Greg. Well, it’s hard to describe. Of bikes you may have ridden... Map 1 is kind of like a XR 100, Map 2 maybe like a KDX200, and Map 3 kind of pulls like a 250 MX bike on the bottom... but all maps sign off like if those bikes only have 3 gears. Keep in mind there is virtually no vibration. It also carries more weight in the front so it doesn’t pull the wheel like a light 2 stroke. You aren’t missing much with the 4-Stokes. I admittedly kind of like 250F bikes, but that’s where my love for 4T ends... with the exception of my 690, and that’s more of my “road bike” that goes off-road if I want😋 I would say the Freeride-E steers more like the heavy front ended 4T. You just have to stay close to home with it. If there’s a 20min commute before you get to your ride spot... battery it wont last. If you truck it somewhere, it has plenty of juice to get your riding itch out unless you’re riding pinned gravel roads or something. Ride it places you would have fun on a pit bike... with no noise 😎

I’d never ridden one outside of the supermoto figure 8 parking lot ripping we did after hours and on slow days 🤣 I was in 3rd sitting on 2nd’s tail the entire moto waiting for a mistake (one line track & he was 3x season high point champ). I stalled about 4 corners from the finish on the last lap and sat on the side of the track kicking it until the following moto ended 🤣 Didn’t know what the hell I was doing. TDC? OU812? 🤷🏼‍♂️ How does this red plastic lever thing work? 🤣 It was a 4 speed and I’m pretty sure I did a 3rd gear start off the concrete and got cut off on the inside going into the first corner by a Pro-pro. Bet your SurRon has about the same range as those gas guzzlers. Those RFS engines were damn tough though! We sold a crap-ton of them and I don’t believe I ever saw one have any issues in all those years.

I looked at 3 for sale last night. I mostly agree on the Thor too. The Prime Pro stuff fits really nice, but the colorways/designs are pretty limited. I have yet to find anything that fits my longer legs better. Tempted to try the FXR stuff next, but I don’t much like the 2020 lines from anyone and I really don’t want to pay full price for another set of gear that doesn’t fit right that I don’t even like. Of my 5 sets of gear, I like my Answer Elite the best, but it’s a little too big (relaxed). I should be wearing a size smaller. I wore AXO in the 90s, switched to O’Neal for a couple years (tempted to try again) and then switched back to Thor and AXO when my O’neal deal went away. Now I mostly only want gear with super venting and dark colors. The dirt here stains everything red and it’s hot AF most the places I ride.

Does the Freeride regen? It is a great feature since it replicates a 4 stroke on decell. Regen is when the bike is going faster than throttle setting, at that point the permanent magnet motor acts as a generator putting power back in battery. so the power you use to get up the hill goes back in on the way down.

Máté Bunya Alta also has a way bigger battery. The Freeride produces 31fp of torque. Its got quite a bit. Look at a 300TPI dyno. Freeride produces the same peak torque but it does it long before 7,5k RPM. I wasn’t trying to compare the two bikes, more bashing people who do. Basically my point of this video was... with the specs scaled, Altra really isn’t vastly superior, you just get more of everything. If Alta would’ve stayed in business, without question I’d have one right now. Reality is, the Freeride is really all I need it to be. The suspension is going to be sick when I get back. If I could tune the engine up about 15% across the board I’d be in heaven. I’d have zero disadvantages on our little motocross tracks and even some advantage. It would cut the run time to right about 20 minutes, which is still good enough and in line with the Alta duration in the higher maps.

bwhaskell dominating, and there is still only 2 at the track with 600 other bikes... predominantly orange ones. KTM isn’t getting into e-MX yet, just like Nike doesn’t care about Triathlon. HOKA One One is the Alta of shoes. Just like KTM, if you think Nike gives a shit about triathlon or HOKA, you’re mistaken. If you don’t think Nike could dominate triathlon, just like KTM couldn’t dominate e-MX, you need to get your head out of the clouds. If you listened to the video, KTM is going for the mobility market. Way bigger sales, just like Nike goes for lifestyle. Billions more dollars than run shoe sales. We love MX, but the rest of the world could care less. They just want an electric scooter to commute to liberal arts classes at a university or buzz across the city to work in India.

Let me summarize his math that doesn't add up in his mind: "Let's not compare apples and oranges. However, for an extra $2,000 you get more than twice the horsepower and a real dirt bike, but you do not get twice the range, therefore the Alta's battery technology is not that great. Besides, KTM is a bigger company, therefore they will always be making better bikes."
@JohnHowerton137
@JohnHowerton137 4 года назад
67% more battery, 50% more power, essentially the same range. Unlikely the same range in the top map (haven’t tested personally). The point was there is range limitations no matter what. $2,000 + $1,500 Yamaha generator = You could have another KTM battery to swap in in 90 seconds. Are you going to podium Straight Rhythm on a Freeride? Nope, won’t even qualify... but In a few years you’ll have “real” paperweight with zero resale. In a few years the KTM will have even more battery tech and will still be in production. Likely in 3 versions. And if demand is great enough, they’ll produce a “real dirt bike” you can buy. Demand isn’t great enough, because people are still bitching about range, while standing next to the wall with their iphone plugged in to comment on how bad ebike batteries suck, and they haven’t ridden their gas bike for two months, because all their riding areas are closed, because their damn 4 stokes carry sound to the next county. That was the point. Nothing wrong with the points. I’d race an Alta in a second. I’d have one if they hadn’t folded. I was looking. I was actually disappointed KTM pick them up. Must not have made business sense. Now go take some deep breaths while doing some silent burnouts in the yard. Ride on ✊

@@JohnHowerton137 You can get a 2019 MXR with 4 hours on it for $7500 (best deal I have found) and the liquidation company that purchased all of the remaining parts is supporting the Alta community. They have enough parts to keep everyone running for a long time. Additionally, the Alta community has been able to fix and repair the small portion of bikes that have acted up and it seems that future repairs will be pretty feasible. I don't think they will lose value past what they have already lost because of the sheer amount of money each one is worth just in parts. I don't think there will be a comparable bike to the Alta for several years maybe even 5. The freeride is a cool bike but its capabilities are more limited. I get your point about the bikes being in different classes. They were designed and marketed for different groups of people. Comparing them isn't really fair I agree. Though I would say the Alta can do almost everything the Freeride can do and it doesn't go the other way mostly when it comes to racing and motocross. The hot-swappable battery is nice. That is the one thing in my mind that Freeride has over the Alta but for the cost of a near new Alta now, the benefit gets outweighed. I also am biased as I have an MXR. In terms of range for map 4 I can get about 45 minutes hammering on a fast large motocross track with loamy dirt and in map 1 or 2 which is what I used for single track I can get 30 miles more or less at race pace, this is in muddy rooty New York. Some guys consistently get closer to 40 miles.

John Howerton I agree with many of your points. But i don’t think range is the main factor holding people back. It’s the price. They aren’t coming down in price. No dirtbikes will. Governments are making it too hard on the companies. Battery tech is too expensive. It is what it is. Enduro Dirtbikes are 10k now. None of us like it. So far, it was worth every penny. I’ve ridden more in two weeks than my 250 smoker in 5 months. Range is the factor. I message people all day long about it. The range of the bike isn’t amazing (none of them are), but it isn’t that bad either. It’s all perspective. I’d love to have a bike with a battery that lasts all week. I’d love to not take my gas can to the race track either. It’s not a adventure bike and it isn’t marketed that way.

Alex Frankl If we’re staying on topic... the BRD/Alta models did have Ohlins from what I remember. Not sure if that’s the stuff Hill roached out... or if they had switched to producing something in-house. Didn’t care enough to research it, but Alta switched to WP. KTM used to come with Ohlins. They used Marzocchi also. Funny enough, the PDS WP shock on my KTM 250 (which many models and years share) is a design rumored to be leased from Ohlins (I have not verified that). It’s cool if you’re into GasGas and KYB man, but saying that Hondas suck because you like Toyotas better is kind of lame. You never have research to back up anything anyway, so I’m not even sure why I reply to you, other than to educate others. The wrist injury that probably killed any chance of me turning pro was CAUSED by KYB suspension. Kawasaki insisted on using progressive springs. I had new straight rate ones on order (just like my freeride and my 250). It packed up in some bumps (common characteristic) right before I tripled into a rhythm section sending me sideways up the face. I ate shit into the face of the forth jump and never rode with a working left hand ever again. The springs arrived about a day or two later. I should have stayed off the bike. It wasn’t the first time that suspension had bitten me. My ego got in the way when I heard one of the Pros had tripled it before me... while I got stuck at work that day. I built that bike’s the motor myself, re-sprung it and maybe re-valved the front. I loaned/sponsored the bike to a factory support Team Green MX rider who won the Pro Women’s National championship on it. I hated that bike. You don’t see me commenting on videos that “KYB sucks” because mine and OODLES of other people’s experience on stock KYB. Hell, the magazines pretty much wouldn’t even test the bikes without removing the crap springs they put in that stuff. My friend loved riding Yamahas at the time, because Hill was. He got some of Josh’s take off RG3 KYB stuff. Said it was a so much better. His Dad, one of my best friends, was always pissed because he never used the stock bike to practice because the suspension was so much worse. Same friend narrowly lost the 250 WORCS title riding KTM PDS because he DNFed like 3 rounds due to the original 250Fs smoking CDI boxes.

You can not measure it. You can measure torque and note the RPM at which it was measured. torque x RPM/ 5252 ( a random constant). Even in Electric motors it is calculated based on multiplying voltage, current, power factor, efficiency and then by this random thing ...1.73/746. These last two are constants, just like the HP formula...think slush fund to make it all work out how you would like it too. I am not bashing, just letting you know, HP does not exist. Use torque and watts for real world comparisons. I am thinking they are way faster then advertised. Hope to own one someday.

Hadn't heard that, but I know for sure HP on a dyno doesn't translate to real speed on the track most of the time. This thing is smooth as it gets and you are moving really fast before you know it. Hope to do a lap time comparison to my 250 MX bike (50+ hp) fairly soon. Limited due to the state being shut down right now. Almost positive I'm faster on this "Toy bike" than my "real bike." I kind of already know I am. Rode them back to back and took times, but I was already tired and riding the ebike after it was raining and muddy. Only 3 sec slower over 3mins... in.the.mud.

@@JohnHowerton137 The cool thing about motors, same torque at every point in the RPM!

More or less. This bike goes flat on top pretty quickly. Headed out right now. Might try some gearing changes to see if it eases up map 3 and lets it pull longer. The E-SX model used a 46T and the E-XC uses a 48T. The hilarious thing about it all. I was searching for a 50T because I figured I would need this toy bike to pull harder based on what people say online 🤣 Now I'm thinking about some of the jumps I hit that require closer to 50MPH to get over. It does it, but it goes a little flat on top. The fact that it gets to momentum faster though might be enough. It accelerates 15-40mph faster than my 350 by 1/2 second in 3rd gear... which is the gear I hit those jumps in. I tested it yesterday. The video was shitty or it would be uploaded now. Plus E will carry a lot more speed in the corner and I can scrub the jumps from the corner harder keep that momentum for the bigger ones.

@@JohnHowerton137 Yup, internal combustion engines can be tuned to deliver their torque peak at different RPMs. So the acceleration can also be tuned. Motor acceleration is flat by comparison after some point. I suppose they will devise motor controllers to fix this in the future though.

It’s a great little bike. Had so much fun on it! When I first started uploading videos there was a TON of people (who’ve never ridden one) bashing on them. It was really getting under my skin as a guy who’s been around motorcycles for a very long time. The idea of this video was to put things into context. Is it an Alta? No. Is a Honda Accord a race car? No. Doesn’t mean they suck and people can’t have fun on them. Even though I haven’t gotten the suspension done yet (next week), people were a little surprised at the track yesterday. Top A riders would not have gotten away from me with suspension fixed.

I like the Alta, until KTM makes a true Enduro/motocross E bike i'll keep buying the gas versions

If I had an Alta I wouldn’t be trading it in for the Freeride, but the point of the video was... a whole lot of fun can be had on the Freeride. It’s not worthless like a lot of people make it out to be. It’s a pretty legit little bike. Like a 230cc sized bike that can be upgraded. It’s the next best e-moto that’s been produced... and the the best that’s still being produced. Bonus is that it’ll still have resale value in 5 years when the Alta wont. The Freeride isn’t a replacement for a primary gas bike, but it can do/go a lot of places a gas bike can’t. I love my 250F, but I love this ebike just as much in a totally different way.

@@orionsoars9953 they actually had a legit looking electric trials bike that was up for preorder before the KTM merger. Be interesting to see if they use that for anything. I’d be on board with a MX-E 😋

@@JohnHowerton137 I agree, thanks to your reviews it shows how capable the bike is. I was specting the suspension not to be a serious suspension and it is not but it's better than i thought. I was hoping the Alta made it to Canada but sadly it didnt, KTM sounds like it's going it's own way with the elctrics and getting some success, wished though that the manufacturers learned from each other, the engineering on the powerplant for the Alta was right on the money. I ended up getting the husqvarna 2 stroke 250 enduro, it's incredible. now I see the freeride woud be a nice adition!, keep the reviews up!
