KTS vs MPH - Which one do you use?

Do you use KTS or MPH in your homebuilt airplane? Most homebuilders use MPH. I had my Dynon set to display airspeed in knots but I've changed it back to mph just to join the rest of the homebuilt world. Let's get it changed in the Dynon and then go get some performance numbers (in mph).

As long as the electronics are available, and you are not using paper charts (which delineate latitude and longitude in degrees, minutes (nautical miles), and seconds), you can use whatever you want. In scenarios when you have to transition to paper charts, you can save yourself some confusion by keeping everything in nautical miles (knots) to begin with. MPH = 6076*Knots/5280 = 3038*Knots/2640 = 1519*Knots/1320, or approximately MPH = 1.15*Knots.

1.152’s been stuck in my mind for over 40 years, so conversion is easy, as long as you have a calculator handy as one gets older 😉

A 20mph stall speed would be incredible. I would like to see more investigation into this. And you are right... the fairings and all of the little details you did for the build really has it looking sharp.

Not only an admirable example of attention to detail but also a fine example of honesty in the aviation world. Those fairings do indeed enhance the finish and perceived quality of a build and thus its overall value, even if the performance gain is only a matter of two or three miles per hour in ideal conditions. They are well worth the investment I’d say 👍

It seems to me you should be able to report both speeds. While knots is better for flying, your audience consists of people who are flyers and non-flyers. An occasional reference to both is desirable. At this point in life (age), I am never going to build a plane but yet I still enjoy this channel. I flew for a bit a long time ago and I am builder of "things" from birth:-) I think this channel should have more viewers and you may want to look at ways to increase viewership.

Hello Mark, we had to build our 701 because of the heat and started again yesterday. You asked which unit is preferred. Here in Europe, for ultralight aircraft which correspond to your LSA with MTOW of 600kg/1320lbs, the flight speed is usually given in km/h and only a few have mph or kts. One of our flight instructors said that he converts the speed into kts and, for example, at 60 kts he takes half, i.e. 30. If he then maintains a descent rate of 300 ft/min at 60kts, he has exactly the 3° glide angle that is optimal for landing. That's why we wanted to install an airspeed indicator in kts so that we don't have to do large conversions in flight.

I rebuilt a 1961 Cessna 172B and put in a full Dynon glass panel, but since the plane was originally built for MPH with the POH and Checklists all in MPH, that's what I use. Why confuse things with a change and introduce the chance for errors? So MPH it is, even though I learned to fly in Knots.

I had a couple of thousand hours in the "knots world" before building my STOL 750, so I stuck with knots. Besides, in STOL, we brag about how low and SLOW we can fly and knots makes for smaller numbers than mph! LOL!

Here in the UK most people talk in Kts, my aircraft has mph and it is a pain as everything from weather to nav revolves around kts. The aircraft I am now building will be kts.

When I first built this airplane, I had it in MPH and then switched it to KTS for the reasons you list (weather, ATC, charts, etc..) but everyone I talk to seems to reference mph. So I switched it back to mph just to be on the same page. It's really easy in the Dynon to switch it back and forth.
@flyingkub

@@KitplaneEnthusiast I think it is because there are not many homebuilders here that most of the GA pilots talk in Kts, the LSA type can be a bit a bit mixed but most will convert to Kts when talking about their aircraft.

I am just starting my Cruzer build. You seem to get the same cruise performance, 116 mph at 2800 rpm, with the 130 hp high compression 350 as Roger gets with the 118 hp low compression. Your climb rates seem slightly better. Some people have tried to convince me to go with the 6 cylinder UL 390 I (140 hp) or even 350is (160 hp). I am sure the climb performance would be phenomenal, but not sure the cruise would be significantly more, maybe 120-125? Of course then you run into maneuvering speed limits in bumpy air. Your thoughts on UL engine choice? My mission is similar to yours, local $100 hamburgers, not as much cross country. Thanks! Keep up the great content!

Yes and a slightly less expensive engine. With the 118hp you can use the cheaper 87 octane car gas. I have to use premium in mine. The only draw back is maybe a slightly less climb rate, but this plane climbs like crazy anyway.

Still in the planning stage (better than dreaming stage) but I'll use MPH to justify the huge expense of the airplane to the wife by showing her how much faster we're going than on the Interstate.🙂

I would be curious how having a Dynon Pitot tube might change the readings. My CruZer with same engine, Sensenich Prop and no wheel pants I am probably seeing 5 mph less at those cruise RPM's. My indicated Stall speeds are much higher than you documented in the video. If it breaks it is in the high 30's but it will be "falling leaf" in the low 40's...

Here in OZ we are all 99% knots. Mph only really seems to be in the USA..some in Europe use Kph I see on videos but even in the homebuilt communits it mainly knots everywhere except the USA....same argument I suppose as why the USA is still stuck in the imperial system for everything.

@@walterrawdanik8077 aviatiion is a connumdrum ... There is a technical reason why it is still AM though. @charlesbrewer6552
@charlesbrewer6552 6 месяцев назад
@@walterrawdanik8077 A nautical mile relates directly to one minute of latitude, so there is no need to reference any other scale regardless of the map you are looking at. In marine navigation nautical miles and knots are the standard because it makes celestial navigation directly related to the angle scale on a sextant. One minute of angle on a celestial sight equals one nautical mile! Aviation navigation was founded on marine practice and for most of the 20th century international flights where navigated by sextant sights. So, the vast tradition is aviation navigation has been in nautical miles and knots. ONLY in America has the use use of statute miles persisted! Just like the backward thinking of Americans who refuse to adopt the metric system even though ALL "Common usage" units are now defined by reference to the metric system! In Australia I grew up with Imperial Units, Pounds.Shillings and Pence, and the metric system then transitioned to dollars and Cents and the metric units. I learned navigation on yachts in Degrees minutes and decimal minutes ( or seconds, I learned aircraft navigation in nautical miles and Knots. The Aircraft i fly have their flight manuals in Knots, so that is what I use. For the life of me i can't see any reason to use MPH just because that is what Americans still use in their cars! The units really don't matter, but why risk the confusion created by different units? Smart pilots use Nautical miles and knots, because that is what NAVIGATION is based on!
