Thank you for enlightening me up in this often misunderstood style of kung fu..although I am hooked with MMA, I still look back to the traditional styles like kung fu and karate, taekwondo because of the core values and martial enlightenment and knowledge I can learn from these traditional styles that i cannot see in MMA..and one of them is respect and humility. Thank you Sifu..

My first teacher was my father, though he's not an expert, he taught me basics but aside from the techniques, he always taught me and instilled in my mind that martial arts is for self defense only. I mustn't use it in wrong purposes like boasting and getting into fights. I have nothing against MMA, i like it a lot and until now I watch UFC and bellator and some old school MMA organizations, but I seldom see a fighter who doesn't talk trash or doing silly stuff like mocking your opponent. For me, no matter how good you are, if you cannot beat your ego and arrogance, you cannot call yourself a true martial artist. Keep up doing this instructional videos. It helps me a lot to understand more of this style and other kung fu styles. And though I know different styles of martial arts, I will still consider myself a novice and will humble myself and empty my cup of knowledge to absorb new concepts like yours. Martial arts like life is a never ending process of learning. My respect and God bless sifu.

I see a lot of footwork in the first technique. You'd really have to be pretty quick to get to the side of someone throwing a jab-cross in a fight. Especially a southpaw. The second technique with the elbows looked more solid to me. It reminded me of 52 Block boxing, blocking punches with elbows. I'm kinda skeptical on Drunken Fist but I'm fascinated by the fluidity and the movement. Both techniques looked very effective though. I appreciated this, helped me understand the application of it.

Use Custamado's footwork, and the drunken boxings "skin" to hide Muay Thai strikes. That will get you ring useful. Then when you're comfortable, work on the drunken traps, and all the weird high low. Oh, and you've got to get used to grabbing, and Leaning on your opponent. That really messed up strikers lol. But a BJJ or wrestler will slap you to the mat.

Beautiful. Any media showing drunken boxing is either over the top or it turns into Wing Chun and in other fights they say it's drunken fist but they only move initially like that and then turn into normal Wushy techniques. First time I have seen a counter move of drunken boxing with actual drunken movement. I kept re watching and looking at the leg movement when closing in. One part I love is the holding the flask move. Usually the elbows are associated with Muay Thai for striking but as a defense it's baffling how it never came to me. The closer range means more time to reach and catch with with less risk of it passing by and once blocked or redirected he still has his forearm to initiate a counter hit or grab.

It looks amazing especially the footwork. But can I ask, is there a lot of people who only practice Drunken Boxing as their preferred style and for self defence? Because it seems more complex and exhausting to execute compared to other forms. Also, what would you say are the strengths of Drunken Boxing, and what advantages does it have over other styles?
@kailianglf2
@kailianglf2 7 лет назад
if I have to guess, the advantage is that your senses are dulled and thus more resistant to pain. plus, drunkenness makes your movements harder to predict. of course, not sure how would someone using drunken fist be faster than someone sober.
@abigailblackmon1144
@abigailblackmon1144 2 года назад
If I understand drunken boxing correctly (and I might not be) then yes, the extra foot work and movements night tire you out faster, but they also make your attacks harder to read, so your opponent can't defend themself aswell. Like yes, his foot work is complicated but he was out of the way of the initial attack much quicker than I expected him to be.

@AuthenticShaolin
@AuthenticShaolin 3 года назад
Yes it does show where the weight is. Great question💪💪💪 It gives your opponent a sense of confidence to come in and attack which is one of the reasons we do this. I want my opponent overconfident when they come in. Mistakes happen easier and the setup for thext attack flows better. The point of drunken is to mislead your attacker. Thanks again for your question. Please subscribe and share. Thanks again. 💪💪💪🙏🙏🙏
@StefanoFierros
@StefanoFierros 3 года назад
to simplify the master's answer, you hold your weight on your rear leg expecting the opponent to attempt to strike your balance; but you can easily shift your weight to the front leg using the style by shifting your body weight towards that leg, since your "real" center of gravity is in your upper torso; from there you can get an advantageous position on your opponent

Can u post videos on an actual resisting opponent? As someone who has studied kung in the past i have found while the techniques can be applied many teachers lack the understanding of actual combat and therefore have very unrealistic perception in how they teach application... Not to mention most who would approach and attack wouldn't do it in that fashion and those who do have experience in some form of effective and tested art such as judo, bjj, kick boxing, boxing etc... Will definitely be ones to strive to apply the techniques against effectively...

Authentic Shaolin Kung Fu do you have any of the videos demonstrating drunken Style kung fu in your competitions? I'm sure the applications you were showing will not be against any type of rules and I'm pretty familiar with Sanda regulation, and if I'm not mistaken, the techniques you demonstrated would have no issues or Consequences if you were to apply them in those scenarios on or off a competitive environment. FYI I never questioned your compitence of weather you were capable of Defending yourself or not which is why I find it very odd that you we're very passively defensive in your comment I merely would like to see an actual application of what you are claiming that is translatable to a realistic situation, I am one who feels that traditional martial arts are fully capable of being applicable to the Modern Age, seeing as I've been able to translate my chinna techniques successfully in grappling tournaments I don't see why this wouldn't be the case with drunken Style kung fu, as a matter of fact there is actually a video floating around of a kickboxer that has successfully combined Muay Thai and drunken Style kung fu but really it's the only video I've seen of that which is why I was hoping that maybe you had any of actual application rather than just a demonstration. After all you did make the assertion that a lot of the drunken Style kung fu you seen out there is garbage and that you are going to demonstrate how " to put it to Modern use" not to mention your video does say how to apply drunken boxing. Just to clarify did you mean how to apply in a demonstration? I guess I'm kind of confused what you meant on your title by applying since demonstration and application are two different things I guess for beginners an application would be a very moderate application with what I would imagine as a non resistant opponent and application I would assume would be to actually apply it during sparring or maybe in a competitive environment. I imagine that someone that has a critique of other styles of drunken Kung Fu that you would be an authority and would agree with me when I say that the best form of application ( unfortunately the only thing we have available to us to fully make effective of the tools that we have to ourselves is to apply them in a competitive scenario) . But I digress it would be nice to see if you had any videos of the drunken style being applied to some of your Sanda tournaments

Great video! I'd like to ask about the "drunken cup" form of the hand... Surely that is inferior to a closed fist? Aren't you reducing your power, and potentially damaging your fingers by striking like that? What is the purpose of it?
@AuthenticShaolin
@AuthenticShaolin 2 месяца назад
Great question. In the drunken fist style, you are striking with many different hand techniques. The cup is but one hand posture in the style. We condition the hand to strike the targets for that particular strike, and the use is for bridge of rhe nose, under the chin. Using the back of the hand and what we call the with knuckle for the side of the jaw. We use elbows, fists, flat palms fingers, and many more. I hope this answer helps. @@AuthenticShaolin Oh yeah I've seen several different strikes since I took an interest in the drunken fist. My question was mostly directed at the cup style... I don't see the benefit over a closed fist? I'm not martially trained, I'm just curious.

You applied quite correctly especially the elbow block. Looks like you did try to unlock the moves embedded in pattern. You move zig zag instead of straight line, your stance moves smoothly instead of bulky stiff, yes that's how it applies. Drunken fist relies much on kuckles press and tip fingers lock. So when comes to sparring, it needed open finger gloves such as karate and mma gloves to work.

thank you for watching and for leaving a great comment. the strikes and combative application is in the form. it just takes time to reflect and understand what you are doing. all styles are great, it's just up to the student to develope good Kung Fu. blessings and thanks again :-)

Authentic Shaolin Kung Fu welcome my friend. Keep up the good work, it depends on u guys now to improve full contact sparring. I've tried all means to get Chinese to restore the fighting syllabus but they just don't care. Good luck buddy

Out of curiosity with the cup fists....are you hitting with the wrist, backhand, knuckles, or any of above?
@AuthenticShaolin
@AuthenticShaolin 6 лет назад
Rayray thanks for your comment. You can strike with many different sides of the cup hand. Back of the hand, knuckles, the wrist bone "fifth knuckle". The fingers for trapping. I will explain all this in the new series of videos soon to come out.

It Seems to me, as a non-Chinese-based martial artist, that the footwork could also aid in recovering balance when on uneven terrain. Does that seem accurate?

Hello again! So I've been trying and bit of drunken boxing and I realize my back hurts from time to time. Should I strengthen my back muscles first before continuing? Thanks a lot 🙏
@AuthenticShaolin
@AuthenticShaolin 4 года назад
With anything in life. You need the right tools for the job. You have to train your muscles to be strong and practice the basics before you can work a form. If your body cant handle the form you will hurt yourself

Gotta ask this a question. What's the point of drunken boxing? Is it to make your enemy think you're poorly coordinated? So that might give you an advantage in a fight? If so, wouldn't that mean you wouldn't oversell it like you see the in the form? Am I right in thinking it's meant to be a tricky style..making me look poorly coordinated to my enemies? So that could give me an advantage in a fight? I think if that's true...then a student would have to practice the individual movements while keeping the tricking in mind? Like the way Muhammed Ali would build feinting into his boxing? I'm just curious about this... thanks..
@AuthenticShaolin
@AuthenticShaolin 2 года назад
You are correct. It is a deceptive style. Appearance of being off balance and out of rhythm will throw your opponent off his game. Exactly like Ali. Great analogy. Instead of acting drunk you could act tired or hurt to achieve the same affect. When people do the drunken form for competition they want to embody a drunkard fighter. 🤙🤙🤙.

Ya know, I was a little concerned on the first technique you showed. I guess I'm a sucker for economy of movement at this point, but when I first saw it I was thinking "wait, it feels like there's one step too many in there." Then I slowed the video down to .25 and watched it again. Turns out it was just the movement of your pants that distracted my eye, haha. Not often we get "practical applied" wushu. Moreover we get the "practical applications" that actually work even less.

practical application is taken out of the martial art when most martial art schools has its focus in competition and for show to please a certain audience, thus many people will say "this martial art is bogus and impractical".

In theory. :-) it's like working on a car. Without the right tools the job may take a lot longer to get done. Plus if the mechanic is fluent in understanding his tools, the job will get done quick and easy. Many instructors just teach form and no function so learning a lot of forms won't help. But if the instructor is fluent in his forms and understands form and function it will help greatly. I hope this helped answer the question. Please subscribe and spread the the word. More vids to come. Thanks for watching.
